2021-22 College Hoops Coaching Carousel

Starting this thread with an opening that's happening just before the start of the season:

Sacramento State head coach Brian Katz announced his retirement yesterday, citing health reasons:

Katz played at Sacramento State in the late '70s and was a Juco coach in California for 19 years before taking over at his alma mater in 2008. He only had 2 winning seasons (2014-15 and 2019-20) and only had 1 postseason appearance losing in the 2nd round of the 2015 CIT to eventual tournament runner-up Northern Arizona. Katz leaves the Hornets program as the winningest coach in the D-I history of the school.

Associate head coach Brandon Laird has been named the interim head coach.

Hayford officially out at Seattle GoodmanHoops

Hayford only had one season under .500 at Seattle after a successful run at Eastern Washington that included an NCAA tournament appearance.

Associate head coach Chris Victor has been named the interim head coach. Victor was an assistant with Hayford his last two season at Eastern Washington before they moved to Seattle.

wow. I shall miss reading his lips when Turgeon goes off on one of his profanity laced screeds on the sidelines of our games vs the Terps.

I went back a few years. Nothing spectacular, but he seemed to have things going generally in the right direction. Recruiting looks like bottom third of B1G. I can see them wanting more but not sure this is the path to getting there.

Could it be that he is just not "into it" any more? Lost his fire? Last year, he apparently wasn't happy and flirted with OU. Money is great and all, but he likely has enough to allow for a sabbatical. Instead of milking the rest of the season, maybe he just wants to sit on a beach with his toes in the sand.

That's where I am on this. Something seems off with the sudden suddenness.

So essentially heā€™s taken team to NCAAs 6 out of last 7 years (would have gone to tourney in Covid year), and one at least one game in the tournament all but one of those years. Iā€™d guess he just tired of the fans and all the sh%t, and couldnā€™t see going through any more in what was likely to be a down year. Iā€™d put the over/under on putting together another streak like that at 2039. Have fun MD fans.

["After a series of conversations with Coach Turgeon, we agreed that a coaching change was the best move for Coach Turgeon and for the Maryland Men's Basketball program," athletic director Damon Evans said. "He has dedicated over a decade of his life to the University of Maryland, and has coached with distinction and honor. He leaves College Park as the 2020 Big Ten Conference champion and with more than 225 victories. He's a great coach and a great person, and I wish Mark, his wife Ann and his entire family all the best in the next chapter of their lives."

Turgeon's team, ranked No. 21 in the preseason AP Poll, has struggled to a 5-3 record and a chorus of fan negativity had grown into a full-throated mob. He's been booed at Xfinity Center at times this season, and there have been chants about firing him.] per 217sports

His team won the conference regular season as recently as 2020. He never had a great tourney run, but arguably his best team wasnā€™t able to participate in the tourney due to COVID.

Itā€™s always rough to be the guy who replaces the guy.

No reason they can't find another good coach. It's a good gig.

What!!?! Mark Turgeon is gone? I loved his confrontation with Juwan Howard last year.
Good night, sweet prince.

We'll always have the memory of you telling Howard, "don't hang the banner because your banners come down."
And him screaming "I'll f**ing kill you!" before being ejected from the game.
