Illinois 87, Iowa 83 Postgame

No team should ever press BECAUSE it should be easy to beat and it should result in a layup every time. Inbound - draw the double team or push the ball down the court quickly - when they double team someone is open - you should have two guys breaking to the ball - identify and make the pass and it's fast break time. Take the layup - draw the foul. if they press you wanna run and you want to draw fouls. If you press you want to sew confusion and tie up the ball handler FAST in a quick double team. The press SHOULD only be useful every once in a while when they don't expect it. You shouldn't be able to press on every inbound. IMHO of course.
Have you ever played against a press that employed five very quick guys. It’s not as easy as you make it sound.

great win Illini........................

Kofi with 17 points and a career high 18 rebounds...........
Jake and Plummer with 21 points each
Trent with 18 pts and 8 rebounds....

Typical road B1G game .....tough , tight and back and forth...

We came back from that 21-2 idiot's run with runs of our own .....

Finally , there were many posts calling this team weak mentally......Whoever posted that or even THOUGHT that should be ashamed of yourself.....This team is one of the strongest mentally driven teams in memory.........To go what we have gone through so far this year and not crumble after the Cincy fiasco shows how TOUGH this team is ......

We won..............on the road..............in the B1G...................without Belo.........

NUFF SAID .................................................................

Now , lets get ready for some wildcat meat feasting this Saturday......................

A toast to the Illini staff and players for being so MENTALLY TOUGH tonight ..................

Sign Granderson to a 5 year, 100 million contract, 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Man looks awesome when he's not down with 103 temperature. So smooth. He lifted us up last year when he came into the starting lineup. And he is lifting us this year. So impressed with him playing summer ball with the national team and competing internationally. has obviously helped him tremendously! I'm so glad we have him as a transfer!!!!!

Great win. Always room for improvement (especially press break and feeding Kofi against pressure), but boy, just nailing the coffin shut free throw after free throw was nice to watch.
Always room. You can practice to prepare for a press but you really on see a press at all much less specific presses a few times a year in be the B1G. Thats why they are more effective than not for teams that have the personal and run them regularly. All said, I thought we did a decent job.

I thought Hawk played great. 7 boards, 5 assists, and 7 points. He played great defense on KM too! Notice the run he went on after Hawk fouled out….
Most of those stats were accumulated in first half. He had kind of a rough second half. The couple of blunders against the press were bad, but I noticed multiple times in second half he caught pass in lane near free throw line and didn’t attack basket but rather just passed out. I would be more than happy to not see Hawk shooting 3s, but he needs to stay aggressive offensively in the mid-range and going to the hoop. That is really where he excels.

So BVD grabbed some good rebounds in the game tonight...but dang he sure didn't really look to take it back up and score on the offensive boards....passed back out to the perimeter on 2 or 3 occasions when I thought he should have powered it back up

It must just be because he didn't show it much last year but I've been really impressed by how good a ball handler Hawkins is for a player his size.

As far as tonight's game goes, I like getting that win in Iowa City and if the Illini are gonna play them there, I'd much prefer to play them now in Iowa CIty versus in January or February when the Hawkeyes have more of their rotations figured out.

Never easy on the road in the B1G. Both teams played their best when the other let up on the gas. Refs kept it interesting, but stayed out of the way for the most part.
The boys showed some character. They fought through some adversity (turnovers) and stuck with the game plan (feed the B1G one). Good things happened.
Let’s get a signature win at home this weekend!
If Kofi is going to get grabbed and hacked every time he touches it, we need the refs to call it closer than that. It basically negates our biggest strength.

I’m awful happy right now. We did what Virginia couldn’t. (Which is awesome in and of itself.) Plus, we beat our 2nd biggest rival??… in Iowa City. AND we‘re 2-0 in BigTen play…Fan-flippin’-tastic!!

Now if we could just get DMV…and I THINK someone else to stop wearing
Hawkeye colored sneaks…We love ya D…but come on, Dude. ;)

(I dunno how they keep from turning ankles in all the low-tops sneaks these days.)
I remember Tom Chambers and I think Vinnie Johnson way back when…but that was about it.

Plummer, Jake, and Kofi played great. Hawk played ok. He made two huge turnovers back to back at crunch time that we over came hecwill learn from and he shot 2 for 8 or 25% and fouled out. I'm not hating on him. He played ok and will do better. The three I listed played great.

Have to take care of the ball better but any win at Iowa is great, especially to get to 2-0 in the B1G. Looking ahead to conference play we have a very favorable next 3 games, would be great to take care of business going into blockbuster matchups with UM and Purdue undefeated in conference.

Yes I have. They have five quick guys - you have two big guys. Three people bringing it up one big at half court and one big ready to bust up or go deep. You get the ball to a big and the only way the dwarf can get to the ball is to foul. When they double team the big he can pass back or he can hit a guard breaking down the court. We'll be better against the press next time. Practicing against a press is very good for conditioning. I bet we learn to run.

Before tonight's win, this was the last time Illinois won in Iowa City:

This was Groce's final season in Champaign and, at the time, was only the 2nd true road win they had had to that point in the season (the other was at Northwestern about a week and half earlier). The final score of the game was 70-66. Malcolm Hill led Illinois with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Finke, Coleman-Lands, and Te'Jon Lucas each had 12 points for the Illini.

We consistently beat the press. We decided to try to run clock after beating it,
This was the frustrating part. Even when we beat it, it was still a net positive for them because we gave up a big portion of our shot clock. Also, I don't think there's an excuse for a 10 second violation. Worst case kust chuck the ball ip and hope one of your incredibly good rebounders can come down with it. Nonetheless, great win, hope they work on this because it will probably come up again.
