I think a lot of the raters are also relying on what they get from coaches. But opinions can change for a whole lot of reasons.

With Fears, there are lots of offers out there from top schools which would seem to justify the high ratings.
I don't think any coaches beyond varsity bball have time to help the rating agencies. That's a business in itself and if you could get a kid you feel will fit your team like a 5 star, why help boost his national exposure.

I've had a few very highly rated athletes play for me, not in bball, and trust me ratings aren't what 99% of coaches want to know.

1. How are the parents
2. How are the grades
3. How is he/she in practice
4. What do they do other than sport __________.

Did we just land a recruit or something?

Its not Wednesday, so no.

1. Miznoz trying to blowup out railroad system hoping we take the train.
2. Miznoz sabotaging the roads so we cannot get there.
3. Clownzo visiting recruits in springfield and fell down

All viable options, but most likely military training for upcoming extracurriculars

So the thought is what, that scouting agencies are bad at what they do but college coaching staffs blindly follow them anyway? And only us fans, who for the most part have no professional scouting background, can see this?
I don’t have any inside information but IMO it is crazy to think that rating sites are only used for and by fans.

We have all seen a duke or Kentucky under the radar recruit and they verbal to blue blood and surprisingly their rankings go up. Coaches know?

We have also seen highly rated kids go to a blue blood and be very average and well below expectations. Coaches know?

There are many examples of great athletes that are highly rated but don’t make it as a great bball player. Coaches know?

Don’t have answers but crazy to think rating services are only for fans.

That's not what I said though. I just think the combined propostions that 1. Rating services don't know what they're doing and 2. Coaching staffs blindly follow said rating services is utterly preposterous. The contention was that perhaps coaching staffs were offering kids based on their high recruiting rankings. I am very confident that no competent program is extending offers without doing their own internal talent evaluation.

I'm sure coaches use rating services to get a wide picture of what kids are out there that might deserve a look. I'm sure rating services look at what kids schools are showing interest in to inform their rankings. And I'm sure both rating services and coaching staffs employ competent talent evaluators, likely with an edge to coaching staffs as they have superior resources.

Juiceman did a nice job rebutting this, but I'd also point out that none of this is an exact science. Pro scouts for every sport are routinely judging guys wrong. You can bet it happens even more at the college level. Sometimes it's not just a talent issue but also a head and heart issue. Hard to project just how hard someone is going to work and for how many years they'll be dedicated to getting better.

The inexact nature of this actually points out even more why coaches don't bet their million dollar salaries and career on the musings of a guy who makes 3% of what they make.

No one said blindly. Just stated that highly rated players by services might garner attention from coaches (and lead to an offer) to take a look and go from there. Thus more offers especially if some of the blue bloods make offers.

I buy that highly rated players get more attention because of their rating. I don't buy that they're going to have more offers if those ratings are bad and don't match up with a positive internal evaluation. To go back to the original context, Fears is obviously a very talented player. Even if he's a bit overrated, he's still likely at least a top 100 player. Now, that doesn't mean he fits a given team (such as ours) and that doesn't mean he's a lock to be good in college, but there's something there that caught and sustained the attention of both scouting services AND coaching staffs.

Sometimes you see a recruit who is top 100 but whose offer sheet looks more like a 3-star. Sometimes you see a recruit rated in the 150-200 range but with some major programs offering. Those are indications that scouting services and coaching staff evaluations are not always aligned.

I wouldn’t say almost certain to land Boswell gonna be a tough battle. Right in the thick of it though.
My source who's VERY close with Fears Sr. (and already said they're done with IL) and friendly with Brandon Boswell & family friend Brett Melton is convinced that Kylan "wants to get back to the area where he has lots of friends and family" and that his $$ is on IL "IF" the Dukes/UKs don't come calling. He doesn't see AZ or any West Coast team as a threat at all FWIW

Duke already has the #2 PG in the nation in 2023. Kentucky appears to lead for the #1 overall recruit, DJ Wagner. But will he play the 2 or 1? I'd imagine they will be interested in the #3 PG too.
