According to reports I am reading, Deuce Spann has entered the transfer portal.

I will partially disagree firing Weber mid season was both detrimental to the kids and program firing Weber was not wrong but the timing decimated recruiting for years to come I feel the same about Zook that was in no way helpful to either program
wut?

Accumulated thoughts regarding recruiting: 1) I prefer the U of I to get the most highly-ranked players possible; but 2) recent history tells us (this isn't exactly shocking news) that high school rankings don't necessarily correlate with production in college. In reviewing our Top Ten recruits (by rankings) from 2017 through 2020 we can see that the majority of them did not end up as regular starters. Further, the number that departed the program (for one reason or another) easily exceeds the number that became starters. The conclusions that I draw from this are: A) Lovie and his staff were really bad at evaluating and recruiting players; B) the team would have been simply awful if not for players joining via transfer from other schools; and 3) several lower-ranked players from each class, even during the Lovie years, turn out to be solid contributors.

On a going-forward basis it would be nice if Bret Bielema and his staff could decrease the percentage of "misses" from the Top Ten while continuing to utilize the underrated guys and adding helpful transfers.

Yeah, I read a report yesterday:
(I don't know why the preview is showing the top of the page instead of the actual post.)

Neither of these were as bad as firing Self during our final four run. Oy Vey!

The revisionist history on this board is amazing. Zook and Weber were fired prior to weak post season invites ( NIT and Toilet Bowl). Self left for his dream job. If our current AD was around he may have backed up the Brinks truck. But as we saw with Kentucky, blue bloods can match the mobey and add more prestige.

What hurt recruiting more was weak replacements who didn't recruit ay the power 5 level.

I wish our AD had a brain in 2003 and not hired Weber but that is water under the bridge at this point. But I am happy where we are now even going through the hell we went through to get here.

Braxton burmeister in the portal. 2 years of eligibility left. Think the staff would really like his game.

What really hurts here was the fact that it was well known that Thad Matta would have said yes if we had asked him. Guenther totally lacking in vision and understanding of what was necessary to run a P5 program.

RG was afraid of another Self clone using us as a steppingstone

Fine I will grant you that but Coach Gunther kicking Dick Butkus off the basketball team was unforgivable in my book, sir. And that is a direct line to our current recruiting issues.

Worst was Gary Moeller and his assistant, Lloyd Carr, quitting on us to go back to Michigan....If only we paid them more...

Wyoming quarterback Levi Williams has entered the transfer portal. Had an outstanding bowl game, and now has three years of eligibility left. Cowboys now looking for another quarterback via the portal. Be interesting to see who they end up starting against the Illini next August 27th:
