They were looking for / listening for whistle. That is when the clock would have stopped or reset too. Basket would have been good
Is it the whistle, and not the act? The refs arm didn't go up until well after the clock had gone to zero, but the announcers we're saying that it should have stopped on the act, not on when the refs made the call (and of course, they did give him the free throws, despite the arm not going up until after the clock had expired).

We only had 2 turnovers in the first half. A total of 6 for the game. Not sure where you're getting we had a ton of unforced turnovers 🤷‍♂️
We were very good at limiting turnovers for most of the game. But I thought we turned it over a couple times in the last couple minutes. I could be wrong. When I talked about unforced turnovers I was trying to refer to the slug of throw-it-to-nobody passes from TMSSPBRM, which gave us just enough of a cushion to survive despite us not scoring a point in the last four minutes or so.

We beat MSU by playing Izzo style defense on them. We got back on defense and limited their fast break baskets. The downside of that was it hurt our rebounding. Once we were in half court defense we made them work hard for their shots. So even though we didn't block very many shots or force an excessive amount of turnovers, we wore them down. So even when they got open shots they weren't hitting them. Kinda like body blows in boxing. At the end we were also feeling the affects of the energy we were expending. I think that's why our shooting and overall movement on offense went down. We even missed free throws that could have iced the game. A very gritty victory for the good guys.
I would like to think that's true, but MSU's Fg% at the start of the game was abysmal, and that was on a lot of open looks.

When Lieb has to practice on a regular routine basis against Kofi, Payne, and BBV, you could say he's taken his licks, learned a lot, and become hardened in becoming mature in preparing for the competition.
And add Dainja to that. That's some brutal practice competition for Lieb.

Now that the euphoria from the victory and the adrenaline from the fear of losing are gone, I processed the fact that we scored zero points in the last , was it 5, minutes. You could tell we were less active in offense the second half, but the last 5 minutes we looked like Dean Smith‘s 4 corners, running out the clock.

We got lucky. That’s a bad strategy- run up a lead and pray for rain.
Wasn't the strategy at all. We were a jump shooting team because we had very little inside presence all day. Those shooters' legs gave out because they were playing pretty much the whole game. Put Kofi back inside and our shooters legs are fresher. Didn't you notice that our guards had to use every ounce of energy on both sides of the floor? You're right...........we didn't make anything the last 5:32. We tried but our legs were gone! Trent couldn't even make a free throw! When's the last time you said that in crunch time?

They did hit their first few shots before we got going.

Apparently, it was our third consecutive sellout as per Josh's Twitter.
I was in Section 203 Row 10, driving 280 miles from Michigan. There were hundreds of empty seats visible from where I sat. Scalpers must have taken a bath if all seats were sold.

I woke up this morning, got my coffee, and pulled up Loyalty to check out the pressers and late-night posts. I saw this and my immediate reaction was: "Are you kidding?! No, Trent; thank you. For believing in the program and showing the tenacity of a lion every game regardless of how beat up you are."

The dude has been priceless in the restoration of our program. If I had a son I would tell him "This is who you need to emulate." I savor every moment I see him on the floor.
I’ll be your son. Are you rich?

Well that was a fun — and tense — game to watch. Wasn’t pretty at times, but that final score was gorgeous.

— Hats off to BBV and Payne. Their rebounding totals weren’t very good, but getting 15 points from them combined was very nice. They have their offensive limitations, but I thought both moved well, made themselves targets down low, caught the ball, and finished better than they have been.

— Good for Goode. Got a bit more extended tick and performed very well.

— I thought on the final play it was a foul on Hawkins, but didn’t really have a problem with him fouling at that point — he had to contest. My problem was with his defense that allowed Hall to get downhill in the first place.

— I’m a DMW fan and realize and applaud everything he brings to the table, With the strange lineups BU has had to use with all the injuries, DMW is being asked to do things out of his comfort zone. It’s not an accident that Izzo calls him the Draymond Green of the Illini. With all that said, the only time I yelled at the TV was when he drove toward the basket and rather than shoot he tried an ill-advised dump down (more like a handoff) to Payne or BBV. That was the second time he did something like that last night, while also having multiple times he drove in a bit, just stopped with no plan, turned back and tried to get ball back out to someone. He might have had only one TO, but he was bogging the offense down with those moves. I just wish he had more of a plan or awareness when he does those things. I do think some of that is a byproduct of AC and Kofi not being in, but we need a bit more out of him in those situations.

With all that said, everyone who played contributed — even Lieb with an “impactful” screen. Great team win over a top 10 opponent.
And only 7 turnovers

Absolutely agree. His leadership and intensity are off the charts. He'll be remembered for many years as one of Illinois' best players.

Clock operators are listening for whistles. In this situation it is nearly impossible to stop clock with 0.02 seconds. After the review officials reset clock to 0.02 seconds meaning shot and more importantly foul happened with 0.02 seconds remaining
Unless the foul is fragrant, refs usually ignore Hawkins foul with less than a second showing.

I love Trent, but I would be shocked if he played a meaningful role in the NBA.
I hope not. He needs solid minutes on the bench(3-5) to put on a show, but he is gonna have to work on his dunk

A mitigating factor is that the pace of the game was very slow, only 60 possessions. That's the slowest game we've played in this year.

We were actually more efficient on offense in this one than in the Marquette game -- 56 pts on 60 possessions (0.93 pts/pos.), versus 66 pts on 77 possessions (0.86 pts/pos.) against Marquette.
I can imagine coach said to slow it down and this was Trent's slow it down without a turnover, getting burnt for turnovers isn't fun either

Trent finishing at the rim has become much better this year than previous years. His finishes look like Curbelo, and I wonder if he learned it by playing with Andre.
Last year, his best finishing game was against Michigan, but I thought Michigan had short and slow guards. This year he is finishing against everybody. His shot is also as good as it has been.

Thinking best line up is going to be with Curbelo coming off the bench to spell Trent or Plummer. Defensively it is difficult to have 3 small guards, but if match ups work possibly.

I am pretty sure it is the whistle. Since I don't know how you hear a whistle when running a video frame by frame that seems to be a tall task in this situation. I can't imagine they have equipment sophisticated enough to 'see' the whistle on some sort of sound wave graph.

Agree, his finishing is so much better. Ayo might have helped teach him also. Trent seems to have increased his vertical quite a bit too. He had Adam Miller issues his freshman year and seemed to get blocked or do some sort of double pump every time.
