CHAMPAIGN — Illinois had a big test for its depth. It passed with flying colors Tuesday against Michigan State.
The No. 24 Illini held on by the skin of their teeth late to upset the No. 10 Spartans 56-55 at the State Farm Center without Kofi Cockburn or Andre Curbelo. Trent Frazier had a game-high 16 points and Illinois (14-5, 7-2 Big Ten) played one of its best defen
“I wrote it on the board ‘Culture Win’,” coach Brad Underwood said. “That’s what tonight was. And I couldn’t be prouder and happier for a group of guys in the locker room than I was tonight.

.“Who gave us a chance? Who would have thought? You have two preseason All-Americans and arguably the best player in college basketball (out). But it doesn’t matter how many men you’re down.”The Spartans (15-5, 6-2) ended the game on a 7-0 run after Frazier hit a pair of free throws to put the Illini up eight with 5:32 to go. Michigan State got a chance to tie the game and come back from being down 13 with 9:37 left when Malik Hall was fouled on a layup with 0.2 seconds left. A pair from the stripe would send the game to overtime, but Hall missed the first before making the second. Frazier took the inbound and the clock expired.

No, because he lost almost a season of games the past two years due to the pandemic. That's why the extra year was given.
The extra year really is to make up for a lost post season. The number of games lost was really just post season in 20 and a couple others along the way. Not even close to a full season.

A lost postseason one year plus a lost first half of the season the following year, likely 15-20 games overall.

An argument could be made that Trent has met #7 - “Individual whose pioneering efforts made a significant impact on Illinois… basketball”. His appearance and “pioneering efforts” were major in leading us out of the wilderness.
This, IMHO, is there so they can put a guy in that doesn't have the on-court accolades. It gives them a bit of a gray area to work in.

I get that folks want to see his jersey in the rafters. What about creating a criteria for a Trent Frazier Leadership (or Culture) award. It could be given to a four (or more) senior who has received some sort of conference award (he's won player of the week and all-defense awards), demonstrated leadership, etc. I'm too lazy to think up more concrete criteria, but I'd think this would be a badge of honor for Trent. I think the biggest dilemma is that this would be VERY difficult to give out yearly. But it might be even more of an honor if it was a demi-decade award.

Randle averaged 15 point, 9 rebounds, and 6 fouls per 40 his senior year. Coleman currently averages 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 fouls per 40.
Maybe that is true but there is no way in your wildest dreams coleman is going to be named all big defensive player

We played 26 regular season games last year — that’s only 4-5 fewer than normal, not half a season. Postseason 2020 would probably have been 4-7 games… at most 10 (if we won the B1G *and* natty). So 8-12 games missed overall is more reasonable.

We only had 2 turnovers in the first half. A total of 6 for the game. Not sure where you're getting we had a ton of unforced turnovers 🤷‍♂️
My 2 cents: I think Trent was tired. He needs 3 consecutive minutes out of each half and more if the pace warrants. Couch knows this and needs to stick to it. I imagine Trent was told to slow the pace and to save turnovers he held it. This team has 5 minute droughts often enough to have a set play designed for just that and it won't be just standing around

Coleman needs ~ 25 lbs more on him to get up to ~ 240, the confidence that will afford him, steady work at both ends, and he'll be a force.

Sweet! Finally something I can do to help the team! Driving down 57 tonight to give Hawkins 25 of my lbs. Everyone’s a winner.
Make sure you stop along the way for a hearty meal. Driving burns calories and we want to ensure that you truly have 25 to give! He needs at least that much.

If my grandma had wheels she'd be a wagon.
True, but we were a lucky miss away from the game going on. How close are we to your grandma having wheels? 🙂

I wasn't agreeing he should have his jersey hung, I was just pointing out that the last criteria seems to be very subjective. It can be taken many different ways and allows for a little gray area for hanging a jersey of a beloved player that didn't receive the accolades to have his jersey hung.

Yeah, that last criteria is a classic "catch-all." It allows the Athletic Dept. the leeway to put up someone they want that doesn't meet any of the other criteria.

And because he willingly accepted a lesser role to make room for Ayo and Kofi and others. Ultimate team guy. I think that is a big part why we love him so much.
I love him for that + his willingness to embrace being what the team needs. Was The Man his freshman year (when we needed it) and then embraced becoming a defensive stopper when Ayo got here and he was no longer the main/only guy (doubly impressive given his lack of physical tools). Every team needs guys that know their role and are willing to take on roles they might not be predisposed to for the betterment of the team. Trent is that to a T.

We get it, you don't like the guy for whatever reason. But Hawkins per 40 stats as a sophomore are across the board better than Randles. His utilization is slightly lower than Brian's sophomore year but c'mon.

I think it would mean more if it wasn't awarded according to any set interval or schedule, but only when truly earned.
