Purdue 84, Illinois 68 Postgame

I think the turning point in the game was us being up 21-12, then whoever they goofy looking guy was for Purdue came out and scored five in a row, which started the 19-3 run. We were in control of the half and could have/should have been in a much stronger position at halftime.

A 19-3 first half run and a 20-8 second half run just can't happen. Getting outscored 39-11 during two stretches won't win many games.

All that said, Purdue is really, really good.

Among other things that went wrong in the second half I think maybe we were running out of gas. Purdue is good and not trying to make excuses but it was our 3rd game in seven days. When I saw this in the schedule I wondered if it might affect us. We have the same thing coming up with Northwestern, Rutgers and Michigan State.

Need to win at least 2 of the next three. Three of the next three and we still have a good chance of winning the Big 10.

Illinois is going to struggle against teams that don't need to send multiple players at Kofi to contain him. He had a nice game by numbers standards, but he didn't put much of a stamp on it. Purdue has the size and depth to keep him from wrecking a game. Their big guys combined for 23/11/4(blocked shots). If we don't have the distinct advantage at the center position, we have issues.

Illinois has very small guards. A guy like Ivey can get whatever shot he wants. The guards HAVE to be able shoot the three effectively (consistently) to be really good teams

DMW, Frazier, and Plummer aren’t athletic enough or big enough to keep up with players like Ivey. The only one that can possibly keep up with him is Curbelo but he’s small and Ivey can shoot over the top of him. We need some more athletic and bigger guards. Getting Epps and Rodgers is definitely a start. Landing Boswell would be huge!

While the refs did let the big boys pound on each other, they sure give Ivey the MJ treatment. Trent flat blew up that ball screen hand off and stole it in the first half only to be called for a foul. Hands off Ivey was the message there. He doesn't need any extra help.

Underwood made some great points! We missed a lot of shots tonight and had some key players struggle. We didn't play our best tonight.. Partly Purdue and partly us being off. We can play better and will play better. Melendez was perfect from the field! He is a star in the making and I feel we need to add more players like him! That's our one weakness in my opinion. Players who can attack the rim with size! Melendez is one of those types of players. Andres Feliz used to do it also! Ayo did it off the dribble last year! We just don't have that for the most part this year... that can do it against the better competition. We have some players coming in that I believe will change that for us, but it's definitely what we're missing! We will need some great shooting nights to overcome that weakness in the tournament against size and great defense! I still believe we can make a deep run and maybe even surprise the NCAA if we get in a rhythm! Forget this game... and find that grit again!! Time to fight Illini! I-L-L baby! 🔶🔷💪🏾💪🏾🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯

Looking at the stats, rebounds and assists were about even. Fouls and Turnovers were about even (we were under 10 TO again!). They just shot the ball a hell of a lot better than us, primarily from 2, cause of Ivey. Ivey Just killed us in that 2nd half. Probably what teams were saying last year about Ayo.
Also our FT was 12-15! Not bad. Some small silver linings and tons to clean up

Unfortunately now it’s a “hope other teams drop some games AND we have to win” instead of us being firmly in the driver’s seat to a title.

I agree with BU ......R J is gonna be a star in this league.......reminds me somewhat of what Johnny Davis looked like last year .......showed flashes of brilliance , but needed experience and body building.....

I think R J will start next season if he puts in the time needed to improve his skills and body....JMHO
From what I've seen him do... his skills are up there already team wise! Even against upperclassmen like Trent! The kid has got some serious game! He just needs the experience and what you gain from that as a player! All the freshman are very talented but lack experience. Hopefully they can gain that over the remainder of the season and in practice. Our upperclassmen are providing that valuable education for them and it's a great thing! Underwood and staff will keep us competing for the big ten title imo! I-L-L

It’s gonna be a tough night against a team like Purdue when the only guard making shots is your worst defender. You just can’t have any lapses against those guys. We played a bad game against the best offense in the country with predictable results. And it seemed like even when we did guard they hit shots anyway.

I think Purdue is the best team in the league but I also think they’re a decent bet to flame out in the tournament because they’re not a particularly good defensive team. If Williams winds up having to guard a guy like Chet Holmgren he’s gonna be nothing but a pair of empty sneakers with smoke coming out of them by the end of the night.

They’re still better than us right now, though. So hats off, I think? Doesn’t feel right.

I miss Feliz. The heart of a lion.

I re-watched a bit of the game and one thing stood out to me: Zach Edey looks like a high school art student’s pencil drawing of Dolph Lundgren that went horribly wrong. I can understand why he gets great post position, would you want to risk getting gashed by the bolts coming out of his neck? He probably fits right in on campus, though. Hang out and watch the students go by for a while and you’ll understand why they sent one of them to the moon. I know, Edey’s gonna be a millionaire next year while I’m sitting on the couch, but it’s worth noting that there are plenty of wealthy people out there who don’t cause small children to spontaneously burst into tears just by looking at them.

Don’t want to sound like this is sour grapes, so I’ll say it again: Purdue is a great team, they go at least nine deep with guys who look like they should’ve had a six-episode arc on Justified. Another thing is [mic cuts out, stage lights go dark]

There are no easy games left (if there ever were any) so it's just time to start another winning streak. The Purdue game never happened.

Just a few humble opinions.
They were the better team tonight so kudos to them.
The post a few above is correct in that we dont have a guard with size to attack the rim.
We wont win many games when Trent, Grandi, and DMW go 5 for 21.
Surprised to see we only had 9 turnovers seemed like more maybe because they were the ugly unforced type.
Someone should explain to Painter its a total d*ck move when your starting center attacks the rim up 15 with 13 seconds left against reserves. No class.
Lastly on a personal note Im starting a go fund me account for Purdue to use towards the purchase of a 21st century digital shot clock complete with decimal point. Found a really nice one on Amazon for under a hundred.
