While watching this game, I came to the conclusion that the Illini’s struggles with letting teams back into the games is defense. I don’t know what the metrics say or don’t say, but they’re just not as good defensively as they were last year — overall as well as generating O from the D (though they got a couple of fast breaks today). They have some incredible offensive runs like they did in the first half and to a lesser degree early in second half, but didn’t get enough stops to really put other team in a huge deficit. Then when they hit a bump of their own on offense, the D can’t stop a team from coming back. As great as Plummer is on offense, he’s almost as bad on D. And while Curbelo is great off the ball with his hands, he is no where near as good with his straight up D. I think the Illini really miss Miller and Ayo’s overall D and their size. Illini are still good enough to win plenty of games, I just don’t expect too many easy victories the rest of the way.

Having said all that, great win. Plummer in first half, Kofi in second half and Trent closing things out was fun to watch. And it seemed like everyone got into the action in some way. Bring on the next opponent.
I think our guard size plays a big role in our defensive struggles.

I know he was the hero at home against Purdue, but I’m chalking this one up as Belo’s best and most complete performance of the year. A couple turnovers, sure, but he was absolute money on the defensive end. Wonder why Plummer rode the pine in the 2nd half? He goes under a screen on Jones who buries an uncontested 3. Belo moved his feet and fought through screens at a Trent level today. Not to mention an incredible vertical contest at the rim against a bigger dude when scUM had a chance to get it within 2. The collective defensive effort of Trent and Belo will win this team games in March. Plummer showed flashes, but I guarantee you he won’t see the end of the game unless he defends at a higher level, no matter how hot he is.

Don't like how we once again let off the gas and let a team stay in it with bad FT shooting. But a couple things I really liked..

We kicked their @$$ in the first half on the perimeter. The we kicked their @$$ in the second half by running offense and working it inside. We are just so hard to beat when we can do that.

When we started to go on our obligatory drought early in the second half, they put Belo in and he went straight to the basket and got an easy layup. Thought that was huge.

Huge win. 2 more to go.

Just because a team catches up doesn’t mean we let our foot off the gas. Basketball is a game of momentum. Sometimes other teams just get hot.

Not only did Belo D up....but he almost died trying to fight through a screen. Sacrifice.

Please stay Belo...and stay healthy!

Trent Frazier, moving up the list:

Got to hope he'll get at least 4 points over the next two games.
pre-game radio Brian B. said he needed 4 points this game to pass Cook .....I believe he got the 4 points so list needs to be updated ....JMHO

Won the rebounding battle by 2
Shot 10-17 from 3 (Plummer 6-9 Trent 3-3)

Pretty incredible. When I said we could close the rebounding disadvantage at halftime, I really wasn't sure. Look at that field goal percentage !!!

So the question is, do we want a share (4 way) of a BIG regular season championship or an easier path to more q1 wins and really playing for March. If we end in a 4 way tie we are the 4 seed looking at Rutgers then Purdue. Probably controversial, but maybe we want Wisconsin to beat Purdue so we would stay away from Purdue until the final game (which is a meaningless game)?
I've thought about this. I made a mistake that either way we would be playing WI in the semi's. But personally I'll take the co-championship. Every quarterfinal game is going to be an absolute war, despite the 5-8 seeds having to play an extra game.

We cannot control WI/PU game ... so whatever happens, right?

Really nice effort in the second half on rebounding. We were getting owned on the boards in the first half. Guys made a great adjustment.
