Iowa can get anywhere from the 4th to the 8th seed in the B1GT. Likely they will be 8th, which pits them up against WI. They can beat WI.

I think when you see 4 analysts (as here on ESPN) give their "opinions" about a hotly contested series or tournament, there is always one guy that will pick an outlier. It's usually Charles Barkley, but he's over on TNT.)) If you're wrong, no one remembers after a month or two. But if you're right, you're legend.

All higher seeds won in Northeast Conference tournament play tonight. Conference semifinals are Saturday night.

Couple of upsets by seed thus far in the Big South tournament with 9 seed North Carolina A&T defeating 8 seed Radford 78-71 in OT. 12th seeded Charleston Southern, who only won one Big South game during the regular season, upset 5 seed UNC Asheville 79-78 on this buzzer beater:

Tennessee State defeated SIUE 77-62 in the opening round of the OVC Tournament.

It does seem a bit odd as they could really just have 1 and 2 get byes based on number of teams. Big Ten does it pretty much out of necessity based on the number of teams

I'd have to imagine WCC will be the only one doing it after this season. With Murray State and Belmont leaving for MVC (along with Austin Peay heading to ASUN), there's less of a reason for OVC to do it starting next season.

Yeah - wcc did it to keep Gonzaga from going to the MVC. Gonzaga wanted it to protect itself from an upset. Some revenue sharing changes made too, but they actually had gone away from this format and brought it back a few years ago to keep Gonzaga.

Southland, WAC, and ivy technically (though only 4 teams participate in conference tournament) all have 1/2 seeds getting by byes into semifinals. Much more common than I thought.

I wonder if the conference has ever considered playing the rounds before the final earlier than they currently do. Maybe have an off day between rounds. This would cost more obviously, but maybe the teams would be better prepared for the NCAAT. Thoughts?

Many of the conferences that start tournaments this week have off days built into the tournament schedules, either by staggering rounds over two days or just giving off days after rounds (Every conference that has started play prior to today has off days, actually). West Coast has an off day between the quarterfinals and semifinals.

The biggest issue with having off days during second-week tournaments is that most of the conferences are already playing 5 straight days going into the NCAA selection, and giving byes to teams in an effort to reward regular season performance by letting them play tired teams the day after they play, and giving off days would offset that.

Good comments. What if the regular season schedule was backed up to allow an extra 2 days that would be needed to have a day off between BT tournament games?

If they cleared the prior weekend, say, by ending games Thursday, you could do three rounds Sunday-Monday-Tuesday to preserve the bye advantage, then do semis-finals either Friday-Saturday, or Saturday-Sunday. However, the venue for the tournament would have to work that out as well (usually for leagues like the Big Ten, they do the women's tournament one weekend and the men's tournament the following weekend). The additional reason some of the smaller conferences have off days is because the games are typically played at the home venue for the better seed.

I’m thinking a setup like this would occasionally get an extra BIG team in the tournament, raising the conference profile.

Only real upsets by seed in today's conference tourney action came from the Sun Belt Conference. 12 seed Little Rock defeated 5 seed South Alabama 75-71 and 10 seed Georgia Southern defeated 7 seed Coastal Carolina 70-64.

All the higher seeds won in OVC, Missouri Valley, ASUN, Horizon League, and Patriot League conference tournaments.

Isn't Murray State pretty much in? Loyola with their regular season late loss to Northern Iowa probably, I agree, needs to win their conference tourney.

Murray State is in, meaning if they lose in their conference tourney, someone else gets the OVC bid and they take an at-large. If Murray State wins, they get the bid anyway but they are also the OVC bid, so no bid is stolen from a different at-large team.

Biggest upset by seed yesterday was 3 seed Morehead State upsetting 2 seed Belmont in the OVC semifinals last night 53-51. Only other upset by seed was 9 seed The Citadel defeating 8 seed East Tennessee State 84-76 in OT in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

First NCAA tournament bid will be clinched tonight when Murray State takes on Morehead State in the OVC Tournament championship in Evansville. Game is set to tip-off at 7:30 PM CT and will air on ESPN2.

I'm not so sure about that. Murray State's best win is against Memphis. They have a lot of 2-5 point wins against teams in the bottom half of the OVC. They were soundly beat by the two better teams they played. The record is flashy. That is it. They do not pass the eye test. As per the comments on many other threads, don't take the polls too seriously. They are PR tools. The voters don't necessarily spend any time on them.

Wasn't Wisconsin basketball in full mutiny mode a while back? Was it last year after the tourney? People saying Gard could be ousted with all the player discontent. Seems like that was either overblown, or he managed to get everyone on board.

They lost to Auburn, at Auburn, by 13. They have one other loss total, on a neutral court, to a team worse than it. They have five wins between 2-5 points, one of which was at Memphis, who is a bubble team.

The polls are irrelevant to Murray State's strength. They're probably a 7-8 seed right now, and safely in the tournament.

I'd wager you didn't see a single game they played, so I'm not sure what you mean by "passing the eye test". That usually means "I refuse to accept actual facts, so I'm going to ignore them and make up my own reasons to discount them"

Three NIT autobids clinched thus far today. UNI lost to Loyola Chicago 66-43 in the MVC Tournament semifinals. Texas State lost to Louisiana in the Sun Belt quarterfinals 79-72. Jacksonville State lost to Jacksonville University 54-51 in the ASUN Tournament semifinals.
