CHAMPAIGN — Brad Underwood was at center court, but you couldn't see the Illinois coach.
A sea of orange and blue engulfed him and the team with an invasion of fans and students.
"Let the party begin," Underwood said to the crowd.
A 74-72 win against Iowa at the State Farm Center capped a dramatic final day in the conference that gave Illinois that distinction. The Illini have the best record in the conference over the past three seasons, and now they finally have hardware to show for it.

"It's been a long time coming," Underwood said.
Wisconsin was upset by then-last place Nebraska hours earlier and the Illini got the break it needed.
"It was a weird day," Underwood said. "A weird, weird day."

There was a major blunder in this article and I didn't copy it but wanted to put it here.......

Truthfully, the party was already underway, and it was 17 years in the making. The Illini finally had a Big Ten title again. For the first time since 1985.

After all , it is a misery paper.................................................

I'll just say this about Curbelo......anyone here with a questionable heart better shape up, or get some extra meds for next year. That kid is going to make us jump off the couch more than any other player we've ever watched. Good and bad.

It's like handing the keys to our new Subaru to Travis Pastrana.

Hang. On.
and I'll add this ... it'll be his assists, finishes at the rim, and defense that will keep him in the positive +/- stat sheet.

When is the replay of this game on TV? I had it set to record on Hulu but it cut out the last minute or so.

I want to see that play where we inbound with 4 on the shot clock and we were a slight tick from beating g the clock and they reversed it. That looked like a Coach Alexander special play to me.

Illinois coach Brad Underwood did not expect to be surrounded by a mob celebrating students Sunday night in Champaign.
He did not expect lowly Nebraska to go to Wisconsin and upset the Badgers, opening the path to the Big Ten championship – OK, a tie for the regular season title – for the Illini.
But that’s what happened. Then the Illini pulled off a harrowing 74-72 victory over No. 24 Iowa, aided immensely by the Hawkeyes missing free throw after free throw after free throw.
As time ran down Kris Murray launched an open corner 3-pointer to give Iowa the victory . . . but shot rimmed out and the wild celebration began for the Illini.

“College athletics is the single greatest sport because it creates memories that last a lifetime,” Underwood told reporters afterward. “Everybody who was on that floor tonight who was a student will remember that moment for the rest of their life. We all will because we were participants, but they were there. They were a part of it.

And give credit for Kofi gambling to leave his man to prevent Keegan's shot. Keegan is more likely to make that on than his brother and it would have given them another second or so to get a tip in if he missed.
Great defensive job by the whole team on that play:
- Trent avoids a screen to stay with Bohannon in the corner
- After DMV gets wiped, Hawkins is the last line of defense and has to stop a much quicker Perkins
- RJ helps him and gets back to shut off the pass to McCaffrey
- Kofi rotates out to deny their best player an open 3
- DMV all out hustle to help force KM to give it up and get just enough of a hand up on CM

One other thing that gets overlooked but deserves mention: Trent did an outstanding job basically neutralizing Jordan Bohannon last night, Iowa's second leading scorer. He was completely invisible and scored 0 points.

This also comes after he was held to 4 points in Iowa City earlier in the year, and 6 points in IL in the regular season last year.

So a player that averages 11 points per game for Iowa over the past 2 years has scored 10 points total in 3 regular season games against Trent.

I have to eat some crow - I was of the opinion that winning the Big Ten title didn't matter that much, how far you go in the NCAA tournament is what really defines your season - I was wrong

Seeing us win the Big Ten Championship and being able to celebrate on our home floor was such a special moment, that I realize winning the Big Ten title does matter - it matters to the players, the staff, the fans, recruits at the game and watching from home and the history books. It is a big deal and I won't take that lightly again

Very nicely summarized. You've nailed it!!! (Someone should have called the screen for DaMonte so that he didn't lose his footing, but it was great team "help defense" that followed ---- given that the screen did indeed occur.)

Correct.

And a lot of it is because while winning the Big 10 conference is so darned difficult, it's still infinitely easier than winning a Natty.

History will teach that the Illini won the Big Ten Title on March 6, 2022.

But actually, the Illini really secured this great victory on March 18, 2017.

Thanks and respect and gratitude to everyone who contributed to this achievement. Including, the great and mighty Illini Nation.

Respect and glory restored. May this be but the first of many such moments to treasure.

WI lost to the last place team in the conference. We beat the hottest team without one of our starters. We absolutely earned this.

As to Curbelo, his defense was spectacular. And even with his turnovers, he sows so much confusion for the opposing defense that he's a net positive.

Underwood's first year was when the BTT was at MSG, so it was a week earlier than usual. We played in the 12-13 Wednesday game, also against Iowa. Tickets were like $5 on Stubhub and you could sit where you want. My son and I were a few (empty) rows away from Andy Katz. The crowd was small enough that you could see us in a couple of highlights. Kipper Nichols had an amazing game, but we lost.

Because of the acclerated schedule, that game was on 2/28/18, so in Underwood's first season, not only did we miss March Madness, but we didn't even play a game in the month of March. That's how far we've come.

Thank you. Enjoy it my friend. You're enormously fortunate to have been there. (y):)
Exactly. The only thing I regret is that since this is my first time being at a tournament winning game, I didn't understand why many people leave their seats with 1 minute left. I thought "wtf? They are leaving early in such a game?" And then when the game ends they all hustled into the field and I realized I am no longer able to get a spot near the players when they hold the trophy

I still remember rushing the Memorial Stadium field after the Michigan win on 10/29/83 that paved the way to the 1984 Rose Bowl. Have a nice pic with the 16-6 scoreboard in the background showing my college, roommate and his wife, my wife, and me. We sat in the middle of the Michigan section - what a day!

Since they all hustled outdoors and onto the "field", it should have left you ample time to be the first person onto the basketball court!!!!

I remember that well, "helped" pull down the south end zone goal post (there's video from overhead somewhere on YouTube, both goal posts were snapped off almost instantly under the swarm of humanity). Great memories.
