Just have to say on the topic of Brad Underwood leaving for Kansas State, Louisville, a blue blood or anywhere else, I wonder if it would be an even bigger blow to the program than Bill Self leaving for Kansas. You certainly would never think so, mainly because you'd expect Josh Whitman to hire a way better coach than Bruce Weber and John Groce. You figure there is no possible way we could hire as poorly again and BU's replacement could keep things rolling. But Underwood is something else, and obviously as we've seen here, there's no guarantee the replacement can get things done at a high level. What Brad has done here is more impressive than Self IMO because of what Self took over from Kruger vs. what Brad took over.

Was so amazing to be at that game last night, just the second time I've got to go in person this year. Made the 3-hour ride home through crappy weather afterward more than worth it. And of all the moments, the comeback, the great plays, the finish, the fans storming the court...the moment that got me the most was the 30 seconds or so Underwood took the mic in the middle of the court packed with fans and spoke to the crowd. Short, sweet, to the point, fires you up... and I probably shouldn't admit this but I had goose bumps and was getting choked up. He's special. Hope we keep him 20 more years.

Oscar Robertson........

They only made the Final Four with Big O. In the three years after he went to the NBA, they went to three straight Finals.

So, that was five straight Final Fours, with Oscar on just the first two.

This is back when college basketball was still largely segregated and integrated teams like Cincinnati, San Francisco, Loyola and UTEP won championships.

Calillini

Now appearing in Tampa
We not only have the better conference, we have one that isn't currently on life support like the Big 12.
He is currently the hottest coach in the BIG with two conference titles in a row (I include last years theft), the most BIG victories in the last 3 years, and a 2021 BTT title. Why go to KSU and play perpetual second fiddle to KU?

He‘s not that stupid.

Will C Collins survive after this season? How about C Martin? Northwestern and Mizzou are spinning in mud.

NW basketball has regressed to their mean. Collins should have left after the year he took them to the big dance at his peak.

Unfortunately he saw what Pat Fitzgerald achieved in football at NW and thought he was of similar capability.

I don't think any other coach could do much better at NW so no reason to fire him. He could get lucky again with recruiting, no injuries and have a upperclassmen squad make the dance again.

--------------

Cuonzo Martin has done significantly worse at Missouri than at Cal (miss, NIT, NCAA) and Tennessee (NIT, NIT NCAA sweet 16). He is in year 5 at Missouri with two NCAA berths.

Mike Anderson did better making tourney last 3 years (he was their 5 years) but left on his own. Then Frank Haith made NCAA two out of 3 years but left on his own. Kim Anderson was total failure with 3 bad seasons.

Crean did better at Indiana. Two big 10 titles and went to sweet 16 three times in 9 years.

He never did anything at GA.

I don’t see how Collins should ever get fired. He’s done as well as anyone and gets better recruits than thrive ever had in history. Who would go there that is better?

Coaches are opportuni$tic and nomadic by nature. But in hindsight, Crean should of just stayed at Marquette…much in the same why Hoiberg should of stayed at Iowa State.

It’s been perpetually downhill for both. Shaka is more of a mixed bag and on the upswing now…but there’s plenty of people in Austin that would have been just fine with him staying at VCU. (Just seems like more of a mid-major kinda dude.)

All three of them could of stayed at their respective places a good long time and had happy homes. Hard to say no to the $$ and the challenge but, I wonder if they think the gamble was worth it…looking back.

A lot of marquee names find out that they can’t do the Dick Vermeil-thing. Which is what makes Underwood’s rebuild, (and others like it )all the more remarkable…

Mark Few comes to mind…
