We were a top 5 team last year and we are a top 20 team this year. Full stop. Assessing a head coach’s quality on any small handful of games is a fool’s errand. If BU is able to recruit, manage, and coach top-20 teams year in and year out, tournament results will follow. Coaching does not suddenly become the deciding factor once the torunament starts—the best teams tend to win the most games in the tournament, just like they do the rest of the season, and these last two years have been really good teams.

Everyone calm down. 5 years ago, we were concerned about making it off the bubble. The conversation was "I hope we win a game, if we get in..." Now, this would be 3 straight years making it into the tourney. The conversation now is "I wonder if we're a 4 or 5 seed" and "I wonder how far of a run we're gonna make in the tourney." We'd rather lose now in this tourney, than in the one that matters. Illinois basketball is back.

Iowa was an ugly game? We beat one of the hottest teams in the country? Who just put up 121 on Northwestern?
Yes, I watched the entire game and I thought it was painfully ugly. We won, but not a well-played game.

I think we all agree that missed free throws, lay ups, dunks, etc... cost us big time this game. Lack of hustle on some plays getting back on defense and focus also. But the one thing I really hope changes is that our best shooters on the team quit passing up open shots and that our 5th year players play like each game could be the finale! Because it literally could be for them. Give it your all! I-L-L

It's an easy game. Make shots = win. Miss shots = lose.

The team played hard....or else they would have gotten boat raced by halftime. Some questionable decisions on offense...but that's what you get with Curbelo missing half the season. Just no rhythm or consistency. If they don't find some...it will be a tough row to plow in the tourney.

Sign me up for next years Curbelo & CoHawk show. Stay healthy, get some rest, and make a run to the Sweet 16.

We love no other. ILL-

Our guards have been inconsistent all year. If they don't get it together it will be another short tourney.

Okay, I have SLIGHTLY cooled off and will bestow upon you all some “looking at the bright side,” with positivity exponentially increasing…

1) This might avoid an utter beatdown against a red hot Iowa team that wants revenge … keeps our 5-game streak against them alive!

2) We were on top of the world last year when Loyola punched us in the face … maybe, MAYBE this shows this team that our current level of play and today’s result indicates we’d lose to an 8-seed-type team … much less a 5-seed.

3) Honestly, maybe we do need some practice and rest.

4) Get Grandison back!!!!

OK, it’s now official. The Illini are suffering from ‘De Paul Disease’.

What is De Paul Disease? Roundball historians will remember some of the De Paul teams of Ray Meyer back when they routinely were highly ranked and even Number One in the Nation for many weeks in several years.

They would come in to Tournament Time perched up high. And then QUICKLY wash out in the first game of The Dance and pack their duffle bags and go home with questions and long faces.

De Paul Disease is: hating to play tournament ball. Or at least, not doing it well.

We know what happened to our Beloved last season. We know what happened today.

Something is preventing this team from succeeding when the time of playing the most important ball of the season comes along.

Fortunately, the Orange gets a another crack at it in a few days. The more important game and the more important tournament yet ahead.

BUT... they have got to fix this. They never could get control of this game today just like what happened with Loyola last year.

Those talented De Paul teams had to live with a legacy of job undone. We don’t want to see the same thing again with Trent and Damonte and Kofi.

Too many guys are playing scared with an obvious lack of confidence. And when you do this, your opponent can immediately SMELL THIS. And how can a veteran team still be so unsure of themselves?

There’s time to fix this, Illini. There’s still Madness ahead. Madness, please, not Sadness.

I find it INCREDIBLY unlucky that we happen to play everyone when they are playing their best. I mean, Indiana is at their best, Iowa was at their best, Penn St. is absolutely at their best right now. Ohio State was at their best. Michigan at the best that they were playing. We went into Michigan St. and beat them when they were at their best this year. We lost to Rutgers at their best. Our last 7 games are against competition at their best. THAT is what gets you ready for March Madness.

What I've learned from reading the last 7 pages. We are destined to not make it past the first weekend. Curbelo is the worst point guard in America. Coleman plays zero defense. Brad doesn't recruit free throw shooters. Plummer is clueless. This is a terrible loss to a terrible team. I haven't heard "Can't wait until football season" yet, so there is that.

I would take that drive and layup attempt from Curbelo 10 times out of 10. He makes that shot 80% of the time. They played a bad game no doubt, but the additional rest will pay dividends. 3, 4, or 5 seed you've got to beat the best teams at some point. So lets hope we get in Auburn's bracket and send Satan back to hell.

All year we have had the same issues. At this point we are who we are. As much as I would love to make a run in the NCAA tournament, I just don't see it happening. We can play a good, heck even great game, but we can't seem to string together a handful of good games in a row. At least not enough to make a tournament run. I would love to be wrong.

I think what a lot of people forget is that the other team gets a say in the outcome, too. Not every game is going to look easy, but if you keep winning, you are probably a good team. No team in any year every has an entire season of "easy" games. Good teams fight through the "ugly" games more often than not and still win. That is (mostly) what we have done this year.

If Russia nuke's the Eastern and Western coastal regions of the USA next week, and Mexico and Canada both invade our N/S flanks, the NCAA will make damn sure there is at least a sixteen game tourney...and the Illini will be playing as a four seed. Trent and DW will both be there.

If you told me Plummer and Curbelo would go 3-19 and Damonte would go 0-0....and that Plummer would be afraid to shoot in the 2nd half, I'd guess the outcome would not be good. With Grandison out and Trent with a subpar outing we did not have much firepower. CH and Kofi were our only weapons...kudos to them for their effort. Few teams can overcome that kind of play. Even with that we had 2 possessions with a chance to win.

I'm gonna say it. I HATE SOME OF THIS FANBASE. Curbelo did not play bad. He missed a layup, we got the look we wanted. Anyone who genuinely thinks that we could have gotten a better look is delusional. You want your best downhill guy going towards the basket in that situation, and that's what we got. Couldn't make it. Coleman's gotta get a grip defensively in the first half, and not lose himself in big situations at the end. Give me Grandison and we win, but hey, we're finally gonna be full strength in the tourney, at least!?!?!
I don't think it's hating on anyone to state the obvious. Belo played well but if Belo, Hawk, or Omar were asked about today I feel like they would all say they need to finish those lay ups, dunks, and FTs. I didn't listen to BU after the game but I think he will say the same along with the fact missed far to many open looks we normally make. They did play hard just didn't work out. Trent did finish well today but others missed shots at the en they typically don't.
Kofi did a great job at the line today and that gave us a chance.
Time for a movie
