Other CONCACAF scores from last night:

Jamaica 0:1 Costa Rica
El Salvador 0:2 Canada
Mexico 1:0 Panama

After last night's matches, Canada remains on top of the table with 25 points and is assured of at least a top 4 finish. The U.S. and Mexico are tied for 2nd with 21 points with the U.S. ahead of El Tri on goal differential. Panama is currently in 4th with 17 points. Costa Rica is just a point behind in 5th at 16 points with El Salvador still technically eligible at 9 points to go into the inter-confederation playoffs but would need A LOT to break their way. Jamaica's loss to Costa Rica eliminated the Reggae Boyz from World Cup qualification.

Final round of qualifiers will be the final weekend of March. The U.S. has trips to Azteca to face Mexico and then to Costa Rica sandwiched by a home match with Panama in Orlando that could be an elimination match for the loser.

Well now we know when the World Cup draw will be:

Obviously the intercontinental playoffs will still have not been completed by then though Wahl suspects that the two winners will be placed into Pot 4. He also said that if the U.S. goes through from one of the automatic spots from CONCACAF then they would be put in Pot 2.

FIFA is also requesting that Brazil and Argentina try and replay their match that was suspended back in September due to covid issues with the Argentina squad.

Serie A wanting to organize a tournament in the U.S. during the World Cup using players not called up by their national teams. The tournament would begin in Orlando a week after the World Cup begins and would include group stages and knockout rounds. Serie A is also looking at getting authorizations for temporary loan agreements for players from other national competitions.

Effects of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are being felt in the soccer world:

-Champions League final that was set to be played May 28 in St. Petersburg will reportedly be moved. Alternative venues are being considered but Wembley will not be one of them due to the EFL playoffs on the same date.
-The FAs of Poland, Sweden, and Czech Republic have released a statement urging FIFA to move any playoff against Russia outside the country. Poland is currently set to face Russia in Moscow on March 24th.
-Schalke, who is currently playing in the second division of German football, has removed the logo of Gazprom, a Russian energy company, from their shirts.
-Brazilian players playing for Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine were appealing for the government's help to leave in an Instagram message earlier today. The players and their families ended up seeking refuge in a hotel in Kiev.

UEFA also announced that Russian and Ukrainian clubs and national teams competing in UEFA competitions will be required to play their home matches at neutral venues until further notice. This mainly impacts Spartak Moscow, who are scheduled to take part in next month's Europa League round of 16 vs. RB Leipzig with the second leg of the match-up set to take place in Moscow on March 17.

2022 MLS Season starts this weekend.

Another expansion side joining this year with Charlotte FC who it sounds like has sold out of tickets for their home opener next weekend vs. the L.A. Galaxy. In addition, Nashville SC will debut their new stadium at the Nashville Fairgrounds with the team being on the road the first couple months of the season before the home opener on May 1.

Some interesting international names coming over this season including Lorenzo Insigne signing with Toronto FC and Xherdan Shaqiri signing with the Chicago Fire.

Season is starting early this year due to the World Cup taking place during the time that MLS usually has their postseason. MLS Decision Day will be October 9 with the MLS Cup awarded on November 5.

Opening weekend matches being televised nationally include Portland hosting New England Revolution tonight and Atlanta United vs. Sporting Kansas City and L.A. Galaxy vs. NYCFC tomorrow afternoon.

No word yet on who, if anyone, will replace Russia in the World Cup playoff vs. Poland that was set to take place in a few weeks. There is precedent as UEFA removed Yugoslavia for Euro 92 during that country's civil war and was replaced by Denmark, who ended up winning the tournament. Among the teams being discussed as possible replacements include Slovakia, Norway, Albania, Hungary, and Finland.

As far as the club portion of this, Spartak Moscow being out of Europa League means RB Leipzig gets a bye into the quarterfinals now.

Also is worth mentioning that Russia's women's soccer team has also been barred from competing in Women's Euro 2022 this summer in England. No word yet on a replacement as they were originally set to be in a group with the Netherlands, Sweden, and Switzerland.

Ukraine has lodged a formal request to FIFA to postpone their playoff semifinal matchup against Scotland. Match is currently set to take place on March 24 at Hampden Park in Glasgow with the winner to face Wales or Austria. The Ukrainian national team players, 15 of whom play their club football in Ukraine, are determined to respond to stay in country during the conflict per the government mandate for men age 18-60 and not leave their homes and families. FIFA has said there is a possibility of the game being rescheduled for June when the intercontinental playoffs take place in Qatar if the situation in Ukraine is not resolved soon.

USMNT dealing with lots of key injuries heading into the final matchdays in CONCACAF qualification this week. Weston McKennie, Sergino Dest, and Brendon Aaronson have already been ruled out and it's likely Matt Turner won't play in any of the matches either. If Turner can't play, the U.S may have to turn to Zach Steffen in goal who has been dealing with back and shoulder injuries the past month and a half. If not him they may have to turn to Ethan Horvath or even Sean Johnson and Gabriel Slonina.

How worried should I be about these last 3 games of qualifiers? We have 3 dog fights on our hands while everyone else in the top of the group have 1 tough game and 2 easier ones on paper. I can't believe this team is in this situation.

Gonna make these next couple posts as separate ones for simplicity's sake.

The final CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers will be played this weekend. Here is the schedule for the USMNT:

-Sunday, March 27, 6:00 PM CT, FS1: vs. Panama (Game being played at Exploria Stadium in Orlando)

As has been noted previously, all of the final match day CONCACAF matches next Wednesday will be taking place at the same time.

Here's how things stand in the other confederations heading into this weekend:

UEFA
Playoffs begin tomorrow. Here are the match-ups (Airing on ESPN+ here in the states unless otherwise noted):

Portugal vs. Turkey (Match will air at 3:00 PM ET on ESPN2)
Sweden vs. Czech Republic
Wales vs. Austria
Italy vs. North Macedonia

Poland faces the Sweden-Czech Republic winner with the winner of Portugal-Turkey facing the winner of Italy-North Macedonia. Those matches will take place on Tuesday. The previously scheduled Scotland-Ukraine match in Glasgow has been pushed back and will now be played sometime in June. The Wales-Austria winner will face the winner of that match in June also.

CONMEBOL
Final two match days to be held tomorrow and Tuesday with Brazil-Argentina still needing to be rescheduled by FIFA. Brazil and Argentina are already officially through and Ecuador has guaranteed themselves at least a spot in the inter-confederation playoffs. So it's down to 4 nations (Uruguay, Peru, Chile, and Colombia) competing for two spots with Bolivia barely hanging their hopes at getting to the inter-confederation playoffs. Uruguay hosts Peru tomorrow and plays at Chile next week. Peru hosts already eliminated Paraguay next week. Chile travels to Brazil tomorrow. Colombia hosts Bolivia tomorrow before traveling to Venezuela next week.

CAF
Third and final round of home-and-home qualifiers begin Friday with the return match being held Tuesday. Here are the match-ups (Airing on ESPN+ here in the states):

Egypt vs. Senegal
Cameroon vs. Algeria
Ghana vs. Nigeria
DR Congo vs. Morocco
Mali vs. Tunisia

AFC
Final round of qualifiers in Group A and B begin early tomorrow U.S. time with the matches airing here in the states on Paramount+. In Group A, Iran and South Korea have already qualified through to the World Cup. The race for the third place team in Group A, who will face the third place team in Group B in a one-game playoff on June 7, is still up in the air as the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, and Iraq are still alive. The United Arab Emirates would effectively clinch that spot if they get at least a draw vs. Iraq and Lebanon somehow loses to last place Syria. In Group B, the top 3 teams (Saudi Arabia, Japan, and Australia) are already decided but where they place is still undecided. Saudi Arabia and Japan could both qualify through to the World Cup directly with wins (Saudi Arabia over China and Japan over Australia).

OFC
This one has gotten a bit strange. They've been playing in a centralized tournament in Qatar for the past week. Tonga and the Cook Islands were set to play a single qualification match in late January to determine the final team in the group stage but Tonga had to withdraw due to the volcano eruption a couple months ago. So the Cook Islands got the final group stage spot. But then the squads from Vanuatu and the Cook Islands, who were set to be in Group A, had covid outbreaks on their squads shortly after the tournament began which led to both sides withdrawing from the tournament and also led to the Solomon Islands and Tahiti, the other two teams in the group, playing a match tomorrow to determine the group winner heading into the final stage, that will begin on Monday. New Zealand leads Group B with Papua New Guinea and Fiji tied at 3 points. New Zealand goes through to the final stage with at least a draw versus already eliminated New Caledonia. Fiji and Papua New Guinea play each other with the winner of the match going through to the final stage of the tournament.
