Not unless Lieb is a stellar student who would have gotten the awards even if he did not play basketball.

The source of the funding, and whether you get counted as a scholarship are mostly independent for football/basketball. The rules are looser for other sports. There is an exception for scholarships “awarded solely on bases having no relationship to athletics ability.”(15.02.5.3) NCAA rules 15.02 contains the details. You can access them through the link given.
I wasn't implying him getting another type of scholarship. I was asking if he could get an nil deal that payed him enough money to pay for his education himself. If that is legal of course.

My reading of the rules is that he would still count against the scholarship limit. NIL is an award based on their athletic ability. The rules seem pretty clear. You count as a scholarship player unless you get no financial aid (loans are fine), or the scholarships are “awarded solely on bases having no relationship to athletics ability.”

Ok, thank you for the clarification.

Don‘t know if this is a proverbial dead horse, but does this make any sense?

Curbelo takes off next year and plays in PR, rehabs what needs fixing at every level and comes back into the portal one year later after he has proven his games is back on his freshman year trajectory.

Does this have any impact on eligibility, number of years left, etc?

Consider this scenario and respond, I'm curious:
After considering his options, Curbelo withdraws from the portal and decides he would like to return to Illinois.

Considering the current recruits and potential transfers, does coach / team / Loyalty want him back?
