I think by the end of this year it was pretty black and white. End of last year and earlier parts of this year he was effective. But he didn’t shoot 50% this year and basically stopped taking open shots. Developed this drive and pivot and turn it over move that he couldn’t stop going to. Teams stopped guarding him and it bogged us down. Previous year he was canning dagger 3’s when they do that.
Can we move on to other topics?

Sorry to see Podz go, he was behind upperclassmen and never really got much tic, I think he has potential with enough playing time. If he had played against better competition in high school, he might have been better prepared for BIG play.

Two things I don’t get, why people keep thinking Podz was all world after his first season with very little time. And the narrative that Coach Underwood doesn’t play freshman. He’s played freshman a lot every year. Thanks for the info 0440,Lville, and Indy much appreciated.
I don’t think anyone called him all world. You can appreciate the effort he put out while he was here. It’s another case for those who liked looking forward watching the development of recruits.

Sure, it just feels like a lot of Illinois fans responses were along the lines of “this is a brutal loss, this really hurts the team,” when they should’ve been “Well, I liked him but he pretty clearly wasn’t good enough to play minutes for us. Hopefully he finds success at a slightly lower level.”

He plays less talented and possibly/probably less effective older players in lieu of younger players. You can spin it however you want. It’s not that he doesn’t play freshman, he just generally doesn’t trust them as much and errs on the side of playing someone like DMW over RJ despite DMW providing nothing down the stretch. I’m a massive Underwood fan and this fact is plain as the sky is blue to me.
Do you have any other examples of Underwood favoring less talented upperclassmen while at Illinois? Or do you think this year was just a unique set of circumstances?

Was hoping Podz would stay. Hope he ends up at a mid major that gets a ton of fan support (Butler, Drake, Wichita St)

Look in my time of following Illini recruiting, the more hoops that Illinois has to jump through, or the more things that have to happen to get a particular recruit is inversely correlated to the likelihood of landing said recruit.

TSJ’s recruitment has been contingent on admissions (which my understanding had been cleared up), Kofi coming back (likely but hasn’t happened yet), and I seem to remember people in his circle being an issue last time (dunno if that’s changed and with NIL being a thing I doubt it).

So yeah I’d be surprised if TSJ ends up in an Illinois uniform.

Dang. Bummed to see Podz go. Can't say I'm surprised given the buzz we heard during his recruitment about wanting to be like Tyler Herro (think that's a sliiiiight overestimation of his talent), but I really liked what he brought to the table, particularly in terms of work ethic and attitude. Would've been a great glue guy in the DMW mold if he were OK with a smaller role on really good teams. Oh well. I'll continue to root for him wherever he goes*.

Silver lining: at least this announcement came with a definitive answer to the earlier discussion about Podz' height. 6'5" it is. @portal_updates don't lie.
