Does anyone know why Mayer is transferring? Or is Baylor still in the mix? Just seems pretty odd. I could be missing something obvious.
I have wondered why myself. But I have heard and read that Baylor is out. If he returned to school, it would not be at Baylor. But who knows...nothing surprises me at this point.

Can they? Remember Garcia was promised a million to go there….he is still waiting on that million….
Is this the same Garcia who transferred to Minni? If so, what went wrong? Was it really a family issue or a money issue?

Ok freshmen gotta step it up. It’s asking a lot of sub-50 recruits but no other choice now. Gonna be a young team. Don’t know what to expect.

I wanted to touch on this....

Why wouldn't Mayer go to UNC?
#1 in Way-too-early ESPN rankings
UNC boosters could probably match any NIL offer from ILL
Steps right into Manek's shoes with probably 30 minutes a game (Would BU give him that kind of playing time?)
Blue Blood School that will get more scouts in the building (plus there will be plenty of scouts for Love and Baycott too)
Playing with Love and Baycott (I would think that's comparable to Ayo and Kofi being on this roster)

Is there any reason why Meyer shouldn't go to UNC?
You make very good points. Know your enemy, and ours is UNC. So, if we really want Mayer, we have to be honest with ourselves first. Can we give him the playing time? If so, show him we can do better than UNC. And if we can't, he's gone.

My only thoughts for him coming here:
Dain connection
Fletch can get him in NBA shape
He can be a focal point instead of 3rd or 4th option
BU draws up Offense and Defense that suits Mayer better

UNC feels they are in a good enough spot and doesn't match money
Illinois graduate degree
Now you're starting to think outside the box. But then you have to really sit back and think ... is he really a better option than RJ or TSJ? I'd concentrate on what he can bring to us and the eventually the NBA defensively ... and yeah, Fletch, ofc.

Can I trust the knowledge of someone who spells Bacot "Baycott"?

This is the point of being a great recruiter. A kid comes on campus for a visit saying x is the most important, and it's your job to have him walk off saying it's y.

UNC has a very strong case, but it's not like IL is offering bread crumbs and a dream.

UNC is gonna be tough to beat out. A preseason projected Number 1 team, with a clear slot for him to fit into (Brady Manek's departing role), rabid (NIL money having) fanbase, as rich a basketball tradition as one could ask for, absolutely gorgeous campus, top-tier academics.

Just hope that for whatever idiosyncratic preferences Mayer has, Illinois would come out on top.

I'm hoping Mayer's time at Baylor affects his decision. At UNC, he may STILL only play about 15-18 minutes with all the talent they have. At Illinois, he'll get 25-30 easily. Plus UIUC can offer comparable NIL cash. *shrug*
Yep. I think he wants both minutes and money, like want to have his cake and eat it. We will see if we can beat out UNC. It's going to be tough. (UNC already has a few NIL players and we have like, zero?)

Precisely. I hate it when people talk about all the factors leading us to lose a recruit. It's all got some validity, but it does for every recruit. The key is for the coaches to do what you just laid out here.

We did that with Skyy who came here despite another promising freshman point. The best programs do that routinely.

And yes, I know that's not easy.

Confusion reigns.

I imagine all of our players are getting something through various arrangements. I'm thinking you're talking about the splashy deals we've been hearing about.

To be clear, there's not much clarity on that. As 0440 intimated, there's some thought that Garcia was lied to. Some have implied that AZ lied to Boswell. I'm sure other fan bases are saying that Kofi left because we promised 1m but couldn't guarantee.

And so on and so on. With the lack of transparency, there's not much of an ability for people to know the truth. And the idea that Illinois is the only angel out there in what we are telling players is the utmost in homerism.

I will say that in my eyes, part of the success of our NIL strategy is to find substantial amounts early for Skyy and Epps, and RJ. Don't wait for them to blow up.

We have the coach we have now because his previous employer lowballed him. Let's learn our lesson.

Nance gonna stay in the draft
Perhaps he will. According to NBA Scouting Live article of 05-22-2022, the pros and cons of Pete Nance's game and potential in the NBA are nicely illustrated. ACCSports.com has a 05-20-2022 article under North Carolina Tar Heels News with a very good overview (with lots of video) of what Nance could bring to UNC, but they believe their chances of getting him are a long shot.

Most of this stems from the fact that Pete is not talking, and he is still contemplating his decision. Having scoured the internet, I see no mention of individual NBA team invitations to workouts. Perhaps others know something more definite. We shall wait and see.
