They were talking about this last week on the Score. Would you all consider the Cubs the best bad team in baseball? Only the Royals, A's, Nationals, and Reds have a worse win percentage right now than the Cubs.
Depends on how many teams you consider bad I suppose, I'd have them around 23rd in baseball. Still less of a disaster than what's happening on the South Side this season.

Recipe for an 8-game losing streak: 8 for their last 85 (.094) with RISP.

I think it’s in their heads at this point.
Or maybe they are just bad at baseball?

For perspective, their current .371 winning percentage born out over an entire season would make this the worst team since 1981 and the second worse team since 1966.

ETA - the only seasons in the entire 147 year history of the Cubs franchise with worse winning percentages than .371 are 1962, 1966 and 1981.

So this is a special kind of historical bad we’re witnessing.

9th time in 17 games the Cubs have been outscored by 6 or more runs. 3-14 in those 17 games.

They’re not just losing. They’re getting killed every other night. Everyone - fans, the players, coaches, front office, ownership - should be way more pissed about this than they are. This team was not supposed to be this bad, and there’s no excuse for it.

A team in the 3rd largest market should not have to keep rebuilding like this. I agree with the rationale of having to rebuild but the farm system should have been strong enough to bridge the gap

I think the past couple weeks are indicative of a team of guys who are waiting to be traded or sent down. Other than Morel, which guys in the lineup feel confident they will be on the Cubs two months from now? (Suzuki will be here, but he isn't playing)

It's just really bizarre how calm everyone is about the team being on pace to be the 3rd worst team in the 147 year franchise history nearly 70 games into the season. We've all seen a ton of bad Cubs teams over the course of our lifetimes, but unless you're over 55 years old, this one is on pace to be the worst.

This is a team that's been marked by a lack of any sense of urgency for 4-5 years. Theo said the offense was broken at the end of 2018 and then rolled the same lineup out there for 3 more years. Contracts for players and coaches just peter out and are never extended. Theo just walked away with a year left on his contract. There was no external search to replace him. Jed was just promoted and then they went a full year without a General Manager. Yan Gomes was the first multi-year free agent contract for a position player in 6 seasons. They went a full decade without producing a MLB pitcher before they altered their approach to pitcher development. They just seem to be... floating along.

If the Cubs do post a 102-loss season and there aren't radical changes in personnel, coaching or management, what does that say about what the Cubs are trying to accomplish here?

I am calm because I didn't expect anything other than mediocrity at best this season. If health and performance were maximized this season, we might have been able to challenge for a WC spot. Obviously, health has been a major issue. It's not surprising to me that we are playing poorly, because there is no illusion of contention at this point. The season is a grind. These guys are human. It's hard to fight for a club you probably won't be playing for in 6 weeks.

At minimum, this organization's talent pool needs a complete re-set. In Jed's defense, I think he at least understands that reality. Don't get too attached to anyone. Every decent player over 25 is for sale, and should be.

I was angry after they dumped Yu so I watched a total of 4 innings of Cubs baseball last year. And that was only because my brother had it on when I visited his house over the Independence Day holiday. I was done with them; there are other things to do.

This year, I expected a below .500 team and they haven't disappointed in that regard. I'm not surprised, though, that they are this bad. Look at the lineup: Outside of Happ, Contreras and possibly Hoerner, their lineup is a collection of underperforming aging vets, injured guys, castoffs or never weres. Their starting staff is horrible (what happened to Kyle Hendricks?), relief pitching equally bad (although, some of them have pretty good ERAs from what I see). Why get all riled up when the best one could possibly hope for is 82-82? 82-82 gets you nowhere. I may come back to them if they field a team with young guys, who are legit up and comers, vying for a spot in the lineup for the next 10 years. Kind of like the early 2010s. I want to see if they can grow together then win something.

The answer to your last question seems obvious to me: make money. It's still a great day hanging out a Wrigley - beats working (just ask Lee Elia!). The question then becomes, are the fans willing to accept this team as the old "loveable losers" and hang out at the park or will they stay away when the team is this bad? You local folks can answer that better than I.

I know there are a multitude of reasons why we are in this spot now. But if you HAD to pick just one, what would it be ?
A couple of candidates: Addison's Russell descent into darkness, Javy Baez's total lack of discipline.
I think one thing is a runaway winner....Jason Heyward's contract. It handcuffed us in so many ways. Most notably not signing Nick Castellanos when he wanted to stay here. At least he'll be gone in 1 1/2 years...$35 MIL richer than he is today.

I think the Heyward contract is probably #1. I think a couple other options are the inability to develop major league pitching, the Quintana trade, and Kris Bryant’s regression from superstar to above average.
Seriously, after 2016 not much went right.
Schwarber was up and down.
Soler trade
Zobrist’s abrupt exit
Darvish contract (quite a roller coaster)

It’s almost like they are cursed or something…
