whatever it was, it didnt stop UIC from hiring him

he needed to get out of town, and not for work reasons but for "personal" ones. that usually means "romantic stuff" with someone besides a spouse, and likely not a UI employee, as that would be a work issue.

its all speculation , and enough has been guessed for me to leave it at that.

I like Dee and wish him well.
There are a lot of students on campus

NAIA is a competitor to the NCAA. It mostly made up of smaller private colleges. In revenue sports NAIA is probably on average somewhere between DII and DIII, but I've read that in some sports, like tennis, some NAIA programs are right up there with good D1 programs.
I can confirm. I played NAIA tennis. They have scholarship money and less restrictions on who can get those scholarships. My school actually had a kid from South Africa who had played very low level professional tennis in Germany.

At one point, not sure if it is this way today, the NAIA had no age restriction. Or, restrictions on finishing in a certain amount of years. I believe you have 6 years to finish 4 years in the NCAA. UIS was a National power house in soccer at the NAIA.. when I was a freshman playing against them, they had 24 and 25 year olds from all over the world playing for them.

My dad played NAIA basketball when he was 30 in the 70s.

If you have never played college sports then according to the NAIA you can be a 60 year old freshman as long as you are taking the classes needed to be labeled a full time student. There was a story not too long ago where there was a grandpa playing football in the NAIA.

Seeing as how none of us know what it was, we can't forget about what we never knew.
Not actually knowing often leads to self proclaimed expertise. There is even a name for the condition..

I know it doesn’t have anything to do with Dee Brown, but this is obviously an informative “what is the NAIA” thread as well it seems. Here’s the article I mentioned earlier.

Back in the 60's and 70's, Quincy College and Chicago State were both NAIA. In basketball one of them would usually best the other to advance out of the region in the NAIA Tournament. Quincy College won a number of NAIA Soccer Championships ( I didn't take the time to check how many). Chicago State went D1 in basketball and QC went D3 in football and D2 in basketball and soccer, though I'm not sure about the latter 2.
I think the coach at Chicago State was Bob Halberg. I may be a little early on this, but he had some really good teams

Your post about not thinking got me to think - Yogi Berra and Winnie the Pooh both could have said that line and I never have made that connection before
Your post about thinking got me to wondering - How come we never saw Yogi Berra and Winnie the Pooh together in the same room at the same time?

Hmmmm??

Glad I clicked the link and saw that it was 11 years old. I was wondering how in the world a 61-year-old could be a Vietnam Vet. Even if he were one of the Marines guarding the embassy in '75, if the story were current he would have been 14.

That was always a fun game. Locals treated it like the Super Bowl and we got free Hardee’s after the game.
