Despite Spain leading most of the way, with the home crowd (and FIBA officials) favoring them, USA went on a big run at the end of the third quarter and won the FIBA U17 World Cup Gold Medal, 79-67, for the sixth Gold Medal in the six iterations and remain undefeated in all games since this tournament's first go in 2010. Jeremy Fears lead the way with a team high 17 points and a team best +20 (similar to the semifinal game against Lithuania), and also added a team high 6 assists. Fears had a team best +/- in each of the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals against more competitive teams in Serbia, Lithuania and Spain. The bench really tightened for USA in this one since this was a competitive game that they never ran away with.

Despite this, Fears did not make the All Star Five for the tournament. The selections seem questionable (voted on before the last game is played) to me, a guy who did not play much for the USA in the Gold Medal Game was in it (looks to have had high scoring performances in blowouts). Both USA selections for the All Star Five were 15 year old class of 2025 recruits (aka about to enter their Sophomore year), Koa Peat and Cooper Flagg (who had 10 points, 17 rebounds and 8 steals in the gold medal game). Peat is an Illinois offering who is trending towards a one and done who will be able to pick any school in the country. Former Illini Andre Curbelo was in the All Star Five for Puerto Rico the last time this tournament was played in 2018 (with COVID cancelling it in 2020).

The two best Spanish players (they had a 7'3 skilled center that was giving USA problems) in the Gold Medal also did not make it in favor of two other guys that didn't stand out as much against USA. The tournament MVP was a Spanish player, Izan Alamansa Perez, which is likely just a product of Spain being the host nation, every other tournament has had the MVP come from the winning USA side (previous MVPs were Bradley Beal, Jahlil Okafor, Malik Newman, Collin Sexton and Jalen Green).

Nunn and Tate?
And Sergio and Marcus from Peoria and Nick and Ervin from Simeon. I think we also got Reggie Woodward along with Efrem Winters from King the same year, but I'm not positive.

I don't think two is that crazy. But I'm not aware of any college basketball team pulling three players from one H.S. in the same year.

Understandable after Schutt transfers to Illinois.
I heard the same stuff about Ullis.

I really don't get this line of reasoning. Is Schutt stupid? He knows what he's up against and he signed up for it. Just like our recruits who are learning more and more about top level competition.

Wish the best for every kid who strives to play at the best programs.

That is correct on Winters and Woodward.

Also Brooks Taylor and Tim Geers. That didnā€™t work out so well. Lol
