The punchline is that they figure the B1G would have gotten at least 2 participants every season and 3 or 4 in 6 of the 8. One of the “off” seasons with only two participants was the weird COVID season in 2020. Of all the conferences, ESPN figures that the B1G would have gotten the most participants over the last 8 years - 23 to the SEC’s 22. The Big 12 is a distant 3rd place with 14.

If you factor in Oklahoma’s 6 hypothetical appearances and USC’s 2, the B1G and SEC rankings flip to 25 to 28, but I think the point holds. The B1G stands to do very well under this new system.

It’s going to depend on what conference you’re in. For the B1G and SEC, you’re right. For everyone else, that auto-bid for a conference championship will be very important.

The ESPN article I linked to above thinks the SEC/B1G are going to get at least 4 of the 6 at large spots every season, leaving only 2 at large spots to the Big 12, PAC #, ACC, Notre Dame and a 2nd Group of 5 team.

So, for example, they think 10-3 Oregon and 10-2 BYU would have been left out of last year’s playoff.

I think under this system, the conference champion is more meaningful than before because - at least for the P5 conferences - it guarantees a spot in the playoffs that wasn’t there before. How meaningful were the PAC 12, Big 12 and ACC championships last year when none of their winners made the playoffs?

did the DIA save that inflatable dome from the 1980's-1990's so we can use it again if ever needed in a December playoff game we might host ? :)

or did we sell it to Rice ?

Yep, suspect this is still early days for expansion, as need for more and more $ proves irresistible.

16 seems easy to foresee down the road when tv contracts are up for negotiation/need to grow the pot.

Wouldn't be surprised if it gets to 32 at some point down the road, played over the months of December and January, with bowl games being a completely historical relic.

ALL historical bowl games will get wrapped into the games that get played over the second and third weekends of 6 games
Rose, Fiesta, Cotton. Sugar Orange and Peach

Citrus might not get in - they will need to spread it over 6 different states .
Bowls like them will still exist, only they will be hosting "losers" from round 1 games which presumably are held on campuses

I love it!

The best will be playing the best over the course of an entire month. I've always hated Bowl games anyway. And the Illini will now have their best chance ever of making the CFP! Surely our conference championship game will now get dumped.

One big downside: Injuries are probably going to now play a big role in deciding who wins the championship.

Most years of the four team format have resulted in a non-competitve 1 vs 4 game. Conclusion; there aren't four teams on the same level of competitiveness.
Why does anyone think there are 12 competitive teams? That is overtly ridiculous. This is a money grab, and it hurts athletes.

I assume fans of this format are also huge supporters of LIV golf, and the futbol Superleague, given they're all driven by the same ethos.

I disagree. While on the one hand, college football is a little topheavy right now, I love seeing the 1st round games being played on campus for teams 5-12. Can you imagine an SEC or a southern ACC school having to play a cold weather game in mid-December in places like Ann Arbor or Columbus?

Equating this to something like LIV golf is wrong on so many levels. Least of which is the fact that LIV golf is sportswashing at the highest level.

Eh... By that logic March Madness should only be 32 teams because no team seeded higher than 8 has ever won.

I will be more interested in watching teams 5-12 play a meaningful game in Dec/Jan instead of all their best players sitting out to focus on the draft (not that I fault any of them for doing so)
