Herm forgot why you play, apparently.

Herm is the sixth straight coach to be fired by ASU (which leads the nation as a streak I'm pretty sure) none of whom had a losing record.
This is pretty incredible. ASU's overall record is pretty impressive. Definitely would not have guessed it. Admin must believe they can reach higher than they have. Not sure this is the way. 6 coaches later certainly doesn't seem so.

ASU had all their best players transfer out

No surprise, their team fell apart.

The transfers were all on Herm.

They needed to make a culture change.

I don't think he ever lost the "interim" tag.
He did, that's what "not ideal" was, even though he never actually coached a game after that.

Recalling the time I looked at this I think it was firing coaches just for losing, which meant that Beckman broke our streak, even though we all know that was a pretext but whatever.

ASU's just been kind of running in place for 35 years.

25, really. But what's a lost decade plus or minus among fans? We certainly know the feeling. They had a good run in the '90s under Bruce Snyder. Very nearly shared a Natty after the '96 season, having barely lost the '97 Rose Bowl to Ohio State after going undefeated to that point. Jake Plummer under center, IIRC. They had the imprimatur of a desperate '00s program, having hired Dennis Erickson for a spell. ;)

Since the Frank Kush era, they have generally been a 5-7 to 7-5 type of program, punctuated by a 10 win season every 6 or 7 years. The alumni and administration get their hopes up during those 10-2 type years, then when inevitably the coach puts together 3 straight 6-6 seasons they figure they can do better and fire him

I think Illini fans had much of the same during the Zook era. At least I did. I had no clue how bad we could be in a very short period of time.

While it may not have ended up as bad as Beckman in 2012 and 2013, the trajectory towards that was there. Losing the final 6 regular season games in 2011, recruiting falling off, etc. 6-7 win seasons under Zook would not have stayed a thing.

Well that's just the thing, Illinois has descended into the abyss at least four times (96-98, 04-06, 12-13, 16-18) during recent times, whereas ASU never really has.

My favorite stat of that ilk: NC State has both won at least 3 and lost at least 3 games in every single season since 1975.

On top of that, we fell into the abyss during 61-62, 68-70 and 77-80.
