I loved seeing our linebacker stuff the Squawks QB on tha 4th down play - whilst rocking the white padded neck roll over his shoulder pads
that was a special season - alas, I had graduated in May that year

In 1983 3rd game of season we shut out Iowa 33-0. At that point we realized we might have something special.

We went 9-0 in B10 and went to Rose Bowl. PTSD prevents me from remembering the event in Pasadena.

If we can upset Wisconsin at Camp Randall then this team might have a chance to go to a big time Bowl.
Loved me some Jack Trudeau..............................I really really did...........and , loved me some Tony Eason.....................I really really did.......

And , loved me some Kirk Kittner ................I really really did.......and loved me some etc , etc...........................................

Was at this game also...

Because of scheduling, there was only one 3 year period in which every team played every OTHER team in the B1G... Illinois is the only school to have that 9-0 record... Of course we got our clock cleaned in Pasadena... but what the hey....

This was my first year at Illinois. I was a transfer student coming in from out of state courtesy of the USAF, and this year set my expectations for every year since then. MAN, has it been a long haul . . . . little did I know how much of an outlier this was to be . . .

I use this as one of my three favorite sports trivia questions at parties, particularly when those parties consist predominately of ACC/SEC fans:

1. Who is the only big ten team to go 9-0 in-conference, while defeating every other team in the conference?
2. Who is the only college football team to go 5-0 vs Kirk Herbstreit during his five years at osu?
3. Who is the only NCAA D1 team to have two players in ESPN's top 10 college football players of all-time?

Ref Rose Bowl that year...I blame Hugh Hefner playboy mansion party for the team before the game for the lopsided loss

Funny listen (unhinged). Warning explicit language towards Illini.

More thoughts here…seems like they want new ideas/ Change. Issues they see, Illini seem to have framework in place

Starter/ injury report. Starting kicker appears out?

Sophomore Trudeau, Rooks, and Williams. Thought we'd be playing for a national title when they were seniors

Ben Brust the Arlington Hts ILLINOIS guy? Looks to me like he's just trying to be loud/obnoxious like all of the talking heads on ESPN. I'm sure deep down in his heart he loves his home state Illini and wishes that we would have recruited him harder.

What a jerk. Does he not realize that Wisconsin football rose from the apololyptic ashes under Barry Alvarez? Just like Michigan State basketball, I think Wisky's time as a Big Ten football powerhouse is just about up.

Though, this is probably gonna give that dude a bit more to yell about. Our fanbase is feeling confident. Quite the change.

Illinois is going to win, and it's going to be a comfortable win where the outcome was evident early in the game. The Illinois DL is going to dominate this game and Mertz is going to have at least 2 turnovers.

31-10 heading in to 4th, WI puts up a patented 12 play 80 yard 8 minute TD drive in the 4th down 21, game ends 31-17, Illini.

Referencing the Rose Bowl vs UCLA that year...I blame Hugh Hefner playboy mansion party for the team before the game for the lopsided loss
1983/84 UCLA QB Rick Neueisel on the Illinois football team's visit to the mansion.......

“I’d love to tell you it’s because they got invited to the Playboy mansion by Hugh Hefner. Hef was a big U of I alum, and he invited their team to the Playboy mansion. We were just a mile and a half (away) with our campus, and we never got the invite. I’d love to tell you that was the reason they fell flat, but I don’t think it had much to do it.”.

Neueisel went on to say that UCLA had several "reads" on the Illini defensive secondary and picked it apart. He also mentioned that they had bulletin board material saying that the #5 ranked Illini wanted a stronger Rose Bowl opponent than 6-4-1 UCLA in order to impress the pollsters, and to give them a shot at the national title.

New Wisconsin fight song?
Dust in the Wind
OK, it's by Kansas. But that works there too.

24 ILLINI
21 Wisconsin

Just to be upfront, I also predicted an Indiana victory and a Virginia loss. (Robert is 4-0 on IB, so he's probably a much better barometer than me. I tend to chug the orange stuff gallons at a time coming off impressive victories.)

That linebacker.............

Looked to me like it was #53 stopping Chuck Long at the goal line. That would be DL Mark Butkus, Dick's nephew. And that would be generation #2 of the Butkus family in orange and blue.

Should be just about time for another of Dick's "kin" to be on campus, btw.

My only worry in this game is if Mertz - an experienced QB - pops a few big pass plays. We need to score some points here - 24 plus.
going off my memory (shaky , at best ) I believe Mertz's first career game was against us and he went off for multiple TD passes....Probably hasn't had a game like that since then........

I'm gonna predict the following ............................

Illini 31
whisky 10

Go Illini !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To add insult to injury, IIRC Neuheisel shredded us while suffering from food poisoning.
