I gotta smile a mile wide ...........................................Oli has done a fantastic job as a rookie manager and shows his affection for the players by recognizing all the individual accomplishments as a leap into everything was done with a team first approach.....really cool to see him single out Nolan Arenado's first division championship in his illustrious career.......and Waino and yadi's record .........and Albert's joining of the 700 club.....

Total team effort from the first game of the season until tonight's clinching the division title....................

BTW , what's up with Ankiel's hair ???........lol...................

LET'S GO CARDINALS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell gave the Cardinals a nod after they prepared to dethrone his team as National League Central champions.
“Watching from afar, they've played well in all facets of the game,” Counsell told reporters ahead of Tuesday’s clinching 6-2 Cardinals victory. “They've scored a whole bunch of runs. They have a whole bunch of hitters playing at a very high level. Lars Nootbaar has quietly had a really good second half. He's probably gotten very little attention with some of the other names they have on their roster who have also had excellent second halves.
“They've pitched exceptionally well. Miles Mikolas has had a quiet, consistent season, which is kind of who he is. The back of their bullpen, they've got [Ryan] Helsley, who's had arguably the best year as a closer with a nod to [the Mets’] Edwin Díaz.”

As for the Brewers, they fell into a deep funk after trading closer Josh Hader to the San Diego Padres in a flurry of odd moves ahead of the trade deadline. The maneuvers left the players doubting management’s commitment to winning this season – and that lack of belief showed with their play on the field.
So the Brewers had to watch the Cardinals celebrate their division title at their expense on their field.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s this field, their field or another field. We just didn’t really play well enough all season to deserve winning the division,” Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich told reporters. “You get what you deserve in sports a lot, and we just, for whatever reason, weren’t able to put it all together. I’m not saying we don’t still have a shot. We still have a shot at a wild card. We have eight games left and are a few back so we have to try to finish strong. Regroup after a tough one tonight and try and slide in that way. Then you never know what can happen.”

MILWAUKEE — As he gleefully scampered from getting doused with carbonated adult beverages to doing the effervescent dousing late Tuesday night there was something missing from Nolan Arenado’s clubhouse celebration gear. He had his first MLB-issued division championship shirt (soaked) and his first MLB-issued division championship hat (backward), but he sported no goggles in sight.
This was not a sign of inexperience.
Their absence was his choice.
“There’s something about the burn,” said Arenado, his eyes stinging from the Champagne and beer sprayed into them. “It hurts, but it feels so good at the same time. It’s like a regular season, man, it hurts so good. It hurts and there are moments when it’s really bad and then there are times it’s really good. And right now, it’s great.”

When he wasn’t being chased by Lars Nootbaar or interviewed by Lars Nootbaar or posing with photos with Albert Pujols, Arenado stepped back to soak in something he had never experienced before.
Nine Gold Glove awards, seven All-Star Games, four Silver Slugger Awards, 299 home runs, and 1,380 games as the most decorated third baseman of his generation, and on a late September night in Milwaukee Arenado finally quenched a thirst with a career first:
A division crown.
“We got him for that reason,” starter Miles Mikolas said. “And however many more years he’s going to be here and we’re all going to be here, that’s how many divisions we’re going to win.”

MILWAUKEE — The first goal the Cardinals set for themselves in spring training, the gateway goal that would get them into the postseason and closer to achieving their loftiest ambition, is also the one Nolan Arenado has brought up several times in recent weeks as a reminder.
What the Cardinals do regularly, he’s yet to do in his career.
Until now.
Nine-time Gold Glove winner, seven-time All-Star and perennial MVP candidate Arenado is now a first-time division champion. He has the T-shirt to prove it.
It will likely need to be washed.
With a win as definitive as their lead in the division, the Cardinals claimed the National League Central crown Tuesday night with a 6-2 victory against second-place Milwaukee at American Family Field. The Cardinals earn their fourth consecutive playoff berth and will enter this year’s expanded format as the third seed in the NL playoffs.

By claiming the season series against the Brewers, the Cardinals earned the tiebreaker for the division title, their 13th shared or outright title of the NL Central. Since the division was created in the mid-1990s and chairman Bill DeWitt Jr.’s group began ownership, the Cardinals have more NL Central titles than the other four teams currently in the division combined. The Cardinals have won 16 division titles since MLB cleaved the leagues in halves and then thirds.
“It will be the first time I’ve been a part of a team that won a division,” said Arenado, who was part of last year’s wild-card Cardinals after spending eight years with Colorado behind the Dodgers. “Having a chance to win the division. That’s what I envisioned (coming to St. Louis).”

The time spent with Class AAA Memphis since getting optioned on Aug. 27 has been longer than expected for left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera.
“They told me this would last 15 days,” Cabrera said in Spanish during an interview in Memphis, Tennessee on Friday — his 27th day since returning to the minors.
Despite the wait on a potential return to the Cardinals bullpen in time for the playoffs, Cabrera's mindset is clear.
“15 days have passed, but we keep the same goal to keep working. When they feel like they need me, I’ll be ready,” he said.

Tuesday marked 31 days since the 25-year-old Cabrera returned to the minors following some struggles in the Cardinals bullpen. The left-hander came into the year as a staple of the Cardinals bullpen the past three seasons and showed much of the same to begin 2022.
Cabrera finished the first three months of the season with a 2.16 ERA across 33 1/3 innings and limited hitters to a .177 batting average. But a 12-game stretch during which he posted an 11.91 ERA in 11 1/3 innings resulted in his return to the minors for the first time since 2019.

I would go with Miles and Quintana for sure and hope they sweep!

Flaherty would be third, with a short leash.
And which team would be the one the Cardinals have the best chance against: Padres, Phillies, or Brewers?

Brewers but I don't think they'll make it. Not a great team this year and especially bad the 2nd half.

Not sold on Flaherty at this point, yet. I would go complete wildcard here and toss Pallante in there as 3rd starter. But let's not kid outselves, Waino is going to be in the playoff rotation, dead arm or no.

Another good outing by Quintana tonight gives him the inside track on being the starter in playoff game # 1 , IMO......................His body of work since the trade is very impressive with a string of allowing only 2 runs or less in numerous games.........Hopefully the Cardinals can reach an agreement on a 2-3 year contract this off season so we don't have to be scouring the waiver wire or low hanging fruit for the rotation next year..

I'm very interested in who will be on the 26 member playoff roster.........I really really am...................

I like Quintana a lot and would like to have him back but not sure the space is there with lefties Matz, Montgomery and Liberatore all under team control/contract for next year. In any event I agree he is probably the game 1 starter in playoffs.

Liberatore needs another year or two at Memphis to hone his stuff.........Matz is the pitching staff's TON , with issues throughout the season health-wise.....
Montgomery has had some regression from his fantastic start to his Redbird career......I like what I see from Quintana , moreso than when he was with the cubbies or the pirates , showing that a change of scenery does pay off sometimes.........

JMHO...........................

BTW , Woodruff with 8 strikeouts of the nine outs so far .......What ???........................hope the K bug is not rearing it's ugly head here ......and Woodruff will have trouble with the pitch clock next year according to his time in between pitches tonight......

To be clear, I don't think Liberatore is in the opening day rotation, but almost certainly Matz and Montgomery will be. Nor am I very high on Matz. Just speculating on what the club will do based on past experience. I do think the club will want to work Liberatore in at some point. Just like they didn't sign a SS last year because they already had DeJong, Sosa and Edman with Gorman waiting in the wings, I don't think they'll overload the roster with lefty starting pitchers either.

Kind of why I don’t want to play the Brewers, starting pitching.

Yep , I want no part of the brewers in the playoffs.....
Notwithstanding tonight's result, the Brewers lineup is pretty subpar. More importantly, they aren't a good ball club right now. Here's the record of these teams for the months of August and September:

Brewers: 26-27

Padres: 29-22

Phillies: 28-24

Even more telling, the Brewers have been a losing team since the end of May (51-53). Their pitching is good, but not elite by any means. They rank #13 in team ERA, which is actually worse than the Cardinals (9th), and the Padres (11th). Phillies are 16th. Give me the Brewers any day.

Fair enough and the stats do prove your opinion .......................I'm old enough to remember anything in the playoffs can happen and if you have a
couple of solid number 1's in your rotation then you have a leg up on your opponent......

The brewers do have the # 1's in Burnes and Woodruff with Williams in the pen ............I agree they have a mediocre lineup at best and I'm still amazed at the massive regression in Yelich , injuries not withstanding........

The phillies are reeling but when we played them you got to see an above average lineup and that was before Harper returned......They also have a
couple # 1's in Wheeler and Nola.............................

The padres have a good lineup and good pitching , but I think we match up best with them.........................

Just win baby and then go sweep the Dodgers...................then sweep the astros and blow a kiss to good old Dusty Baker..........

MILWAUKEE — With the NL Central crown in their pocket and time to kill on their hands, the Cardinals cannot do anything to change their postseason position in the coming days, but they had one more last chance to shape who they might face.
The Milwaukee Brewers, eliminated from a second consecutive division title by losing to the Cardinals on Tuesday, remain in the thick of a wild-card race and a chance to create a rematch with the Cardinals in October.
If they could resist a rally from a rookie-infused Cardinals lineup.
The Cardinals got the tying run to third base in the seventh and eighth innings against All-Star Devin Williams. A dynamic double play from Kolten Wong saved Milwaukee in seventh, and Williams took care of the eighth on his own with two strikeouts to cool the Cardinals and carry the Brewers to a 5-1 victory Wednesday at American Family Field.

The win moved Milwaukee a half-game behind Philadelphia for the third and final wild-card berth into the NL playoffs. The team that claims the third wild card will travel to St. Louis a week from Friday to play a best-of-three playoff series, all at Busch Stadium. The Phillies have lost nine of their past 12 games to keep the Brewers in play, and the Cardinals had a chance Wednesday to complete a series sweep and give the Phillies an assist. Either potential opponent boasts starters who could shift a series regardless of seeding, and the Cardinals got a reminder of that with Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff’s 10 strikeouts Wednesday.

MILWAUKEE — Center fielder Dylan Carlson doubled and scored twice from the left side of the plate in Tuesday’s clincher, further illustrating how limited his swing may have been by a hand injury and hinting at one way the Cardinals intend to use their six remaining games.
“He’s hitting second for a reason,” manager Olive Marmol said.
That reason is to get Carlson as many at-bats against right-handed pitching in the near future to determine if he’s regain his swing from that side and can be the Cardinals’ everyday center fielder when the postseason starts next week. Because they can. For the first time in at least a decade, the Cardinals have seven regular-season games to experiment and, win or lose or rainout, their position in the standings will not change.

The Cardinals clinched the National League Central division title with a 6-2 win Tuesday night and will enter the NL playoffs as the third seed. They’ll host the sixth seed in a best-of-three series, with all games at Busch Stadium Oct. 7-9. The Phillies had the lead ahead of the Brewers for the sixth seed as play began Wednesday.
Marmol wants to use the time to get regulars rest, give some players looks in new spots, and not lose any of the crispness that helped them clinch with a week to go.
“It’s a combination,” Marmol said. “It’s a really good balance of keeping guys sharp and getting them rested, and you don’t want to lose the edge of winning. ... Will certain lineups look different? Are we going to rest guys? Will outings look shorter? Will we use our ‘pen a little differently? Yes, to all of those. But you still don’t miss on the small details of the game. That’s the stuff that when I say sharp, you keep those things sharp.”

What the Cardinals have found in rookie Brendan Donovan to fill an immediate need is just a hint of what they think he can become in the years to come.
One of the highest on-base percentages for a rookie since “Moneyball” published and one of the highest for a Cardinals rookie ever has thrust Donovan to the top of the Cardinals lineup during a division title run. When the Cardinals host an opening-round playoff series in a week, it’s Donovan who is likely to bat first because of an element of his game the Cardinals think can climb even higher.
“This kid already looks comfortable, and he’s been here for two minutes,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “Give him years and it’s — gosh darn, man — the patience at the plate, his approach, all of that is what usually comes (with time). You usually have a skillset and then you have to hone your approach and your plate discipline. He already has those things. Give him a year and what do we do we have? I think you have a really productive, on-base machine.”

The Cardinals return to Busch Stadium for the final home series of the regular season and — as promised by the schedule — they’re a different team. In their 11 days away, the Cardinals clinched the National League Central title, Albert Pujols joined the 700-homer club, and rotation concerns persisted (or surfaced anew). The luxury of a series against Pittsburgh that will not change the standings or their seed into the postseason means they’ll spend time all weekend celebrating their retiring greats, Pujols and Yadier Molina, culminating with an on-field ceremony Sunday before first pitch.
There will be mentions of how in the past two decades these veterans help set standards for the organization as a perennial contender, and in the lineup, there will be examples of how the youth helped this year’s team keep that pace.

It’s as obvious as 1-2-3.

------------------------------------------------------

Brendan Donovan is in my starting lineup everyday , if I was the Cardinals lineup..........And he would be batting lead off or second depending on matchups.........Kid is a hustler , a gamer , who has the ability to play 5-6 positions and works every at bat to the limit...........Should get considerable consideration for ROY ........................................jmho.........

Former Cardinal player, (and now nonstop announcer) Jim Edmonds stepped up to the “I-promise-thee” plate and got married on Sunday.

Edmonds and Realtor Kortnie O’Connor exchanged vows at a destination wedding in front of 32 guests at a 19th-century villa in Lake Como, Italy, according to People.
The couple announced their relationship in 2020 and were engaged in July 2021.

“The best part of the wedding is I now get to spend the rest of my life with Kortnie,” People quotes Edmonds as saying. “For the first time in my life, I finally understand true happiness.”

Almost all of the comments are super critical of his announcing and a lot of his personal issues....................Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
