Illinois 9, Iowa 6 Postgame

I love Art's attitude and he's been through some awful stuff before his time here... but I don't understand it. He can *barely* complete simple screen passes without getting his WR's killed. His release is slow and high, we won't have any WR's left.

I don't want to be that guy but he can't be the answer at QB if DeVito is out.

Hahaha, so they are putting themselves into the, "well we must be terrible if Illinois beat us", camp?

Good by me, we've already exceeded (outside) expectations for THE SEASON in our first 6 games.

And I have no doubt if DeVito stayed healthy, we win that by double digits. He was moving the offense before getting injured.
And that Wisconsin offense that we shut down proved to be pretty solid yesterday.

it’s indeed troublesome . we knew it last year .

one other comment about his non fumble : can you even begin to think about the meltdown in Illini world had that call not been reversed ?

In 2019 Peters is targeted and knocked out. In 2020 four defensive starters were knocked out of the Iowa game. Last night DeVito, Williams and Nicholson. I know injuries are a part of the game, and it did not look as though the DeVito hit was intended to injure, but what the heck? Injuries in Iowa games seem to focus on our most important players.

I agree completely with BB that the hit on I. Williams was a classic targeting head call with helmit to helmit hit initiated by the squwak defender ....it shouldn't matter that Williams was not involved in the play other than being a decoy.....If an Illini had done that in full view of the referee it would have been called.....

Conversely , I was stunned that they called that face mask penalty on the squwak running back....it was a good call but seldom called and it should be called every time........There's a big difference between a good stiff arm and grabbing the face mask and twisting it back and forth.......

JMHO.................

One thing I noticed yesterday at the game after Art went in (this could have happened with DeVito, too, but I didn’t notice until Art), every snap to him seemed to be at his ankles. I know it’s not a major thing, but it certainly seemed to immediately throw off the timing of nearly every play.

Then again, I am certainly no expert, so maybe I’m over thinking things.

Art did seem to get a LOT of low snaps.

But again, just a huge, huge win for the kids, fans, recruits and Illinois Football. Now let's get Art back, enter the Top 25 at say #22 and beat Minnesota.

I apologize ahead of time forum readers. I'm sure it's been stated 100 times and I don't have time to read all the posts. But the play calling was BRUTAL on the offensive side tonight. Scouting reports say Iowa's defense and special teams score more than their offense. You want to win? You do NOT give Iowa's defense any opportunities to take away the ball and/or score. We passed (we ATTEMPTED to pass) in so many situations where we should have fed Chase Brown. 4th quarter, 2nd and goal, game on the line we PASS? JAYZUZ you feel Brown the ball three times and kick a field goal for the lead and MAYBE you score a TD. We pass on 2nd and goal and it's picked off. The ONLY thing that can't happen happened. Defense holds like a BOSS. We get the ball back. First down, feed Chase. Second down and Chase in motion and goes wide??? QB run and Sit almost fumbles the ball??? That's basically HOW TO LOSE TO IOWA 101. If you don't feel comfortable feeding the #1 RB in the nation then kick the field goal on 2nd down. That would suck less. REALLY REALLY terrible calls. It wasn't tricksy, it's wasn't 3D checkers, it's was BAD, horrible, abysmal play calling. The refs bail us out and fix the call. Iowa's points go off the board and we pull out the win. You just do NOT put your backup QB in that position on those downs. And we got some solid plays out of Artur and he got us downfield. Feed Chase, and if he doesn't score you got the field goal. Brown should have had more touches. Outstanding game given that defense. Ugly win. And how fun is it to watch our defense play? Feed Chase and let the D do their thing. I hope I NEVER see us feed their D like that again. I forgive you LJ, don't ever do that again.
BLJ needs to adapt his playbook when Art is in the game. Art is NOT Tommy. Art is a limited QB. I believe TDV playing the entire game turns this game into a 20-3 game. I agree with you, Lex, dont do this again, Barry LOL

Hopefully he is just like me. I get a migraine or any intense headache i get nausea bad. Does not make a headache any better when you are dry heaving uncontrollably. Get better Taz, we need ya!
I played middle linebacker in HS and had a helmet to helmet hit with a large tackle opponent and i saw stars for a couple hours and got so sick to my stomach that I threw up for a while and dry heaved after that.........bad feeling to say the least..............

I really hope DeVito is ready to play next week. Offense is not the same without him. Seems like he naturally goes through his progressions. Art does a lot of pump faking and telegraphs BIG TIME where he is going with the ball. Calm and collective during stressful situations, ill give him that but we need a playmaker like DeVito. If Leary doesn't make big time strides in the off season and pass up Art on the depth chart we should definitely look at the portal.

I needed more, so went to an Iowa board. Some interesting takes there:

Every other team on their remaining schedule (except Northwestern) "is better than Illinois [even] with their starting QB."

"This 'Illinois Defense is so stout' narrative is about to fall apart BIG TIME. ... The Illinois defense hasn't stopped ANYONE yet. They're about to find out..."

To those who declared this FG fest "ugly", I didn't see it so can't really comment. However, one of the three best Illini games I saw while a student '84-'90 was the 3-3 tie v. #4 Michigan in MS in Nov. 1985. (Jim Harbaugh was under center for UM.) If not for a Michigan DB tipping Chris White's FG attempt (kicked toward the south EZ) as time expired (the ball hit the center of the crossbar and bounced back onto the field) we would have had an epic upset victory.

Michigan had a long drive in the 4Q and our D forced a fumble when Michigan was inside our 10 yard line. Still remember it all these years later, including the sinking feeling in my stomach, sitting up in the east balcony, after seeing White's tipped FG come so close and then ding off the cross bar.

Highlights here via Bo Schembechler's weekly TV show the day after the game. The footage quality isn't great. It was a cold, dark, overcast day and the game wasn't on TV.
