Everything that could go wrong, did.

*Quarterback goes down in the 1st quarter.
*Starting receiver, corner, and linebacker go down throughout the course of the game.
*Muffed punt.
*Fumble inside our own 5.
*Interception inside opponents 5.
*False start on final drive to ice the game.
*Pass interference on opponents final drive.

Yet, we win?

Come on now.

I apologize ahead of time forum readers. I'm sure it's been stated 100 times and I don't have time to read all the posts. But the play calling was BRUTAL on the offensive side tonight. Scouting reports say Iowa's defense and special teams score more than their offense. You want to win? You do NOT give Iowa's defense any opportunities to take away the ball and/or score. We passed (we ATTEMPTED to pass) in so many situations where we should have fed Chase Brown. 4th quarter, 2nd and goal, game on the line we PASS? JAYZUZ you feel Brown the ball three times and kick a field goal for the lead and MAYBE you score a TD. We pass on 2nd and goal and it's picked off. The ONLY thing that can't happen happened. Defense holds like a BOSS. We get the ball back. First down, feed Chase. Second down and Chase in motion and goes wide??? QB run and Sit almost fumbles the ball??? That's basically HOW TO LOSE TO IOWA 101. If you don't feel comfortable feeding the #1 RB in the nation then kick the field goal on 2nd down. That would suck less. REALLY REALLY terrible calls. It wasn't tricksy, it's wasn't 3D checkers, it's was BAD, horrible, abysmal play calling. The refs bail us out and fix the call. Iowa's points go off the board and we pull out the win. You just do NOT put your backup QB in that position on those downs. And we got some solid plays out of Artur and he got us downfield. Feed Chase, and if he doesn't score you got the field goal. Brown should have had more touches. Outstanding game given that defense. Ugly win. And how fun is it to watch our defense play? Feed Chase and let the D do their thing. I hope I NEVER see us feed their D like that again. I forgive you LJ, don't ever do that again.

Yes, DeVito is needed, but on the more encouraging sign, Illinois still had a lot of success rushing the ball with Chase who Illinois spammed so much that Bret and Barry are going to ruin his future NFL career (hopefully not serious) and important to remember that Iowa has a genuinely ELITE defense

He had 31 carries... what do you want him to get? 50?

Did anybody, going into the season, ever imagine having the chance to clinch bowl berth on Homecoming!? While not pretty at times, this win may be culture defining. Beat a team you have not beaten in 14 years, with many recruits in the house! My watch kept telling me that my stress levels were elevated...definitely worth it.
GREAT WINN!!! Wish I was there to celebrate with my Illini brethren. Moved out of state in 1999. Carried my passion for Illini football with me. Watching games on TV is tough. I squirm, I pace, I sometimes yell at the screen. Never turn it off, no matter how bad. It's a truly draining experience.

GO ILLINI!!!

Way to gut it out despite too many attempts to give it away through turnovers and penalties. One announcer said this makes the Illini a top 25 team.
That is just a little over the top irrational exuberance, but we can get there. Just clean up the turnovers, the play calling and get our QB back. The D rules!

I said special teams and turn overs would be the difference. I was kinda sorta right. Just not how I expected.

Defense was outstanding. These guys have so much heart it’s unbelievable. Some questionable play calling on both sides. Bad penalties and turnovers. Yet somehow they found a way to win. Incredible. Proud of our guys for winning ugly.

I wonder what the injury situation will look like for next week. That makes this win all the more important. With this defense we are never out of it!

I-L-L ! ! !

The good (it goes without saying that our D, in particular the run D and pass rush, is outstanding):

Pregame chances of us winning if the game came down to three field goal attempts per team, with us using a freshman kicker: 10%? Kudos to the kid!

Weird to me that the pooch kickoff concept kinda worked. Seemed like Iowa was mostly starting behind the 25.

I though Art showed flashes of accuracy.

The teeth-gritting:

I'm still less nervous with Chase Brown out, than with DeVito out.

I'm not sure about the future of that pump fake to the right flat, then long lob down the right side. We've run it an awful lot, and I think its becoming predictable, and turning into a jump ball situation down there.

My biggest concern: a weakness of our D has been exposed. In the post-game, their QB talked about their design for the pass routes, and it sure seemed to be a pretty successful one. I expect other teams to try more of that.

I needed more, so went to an Iowa board. Some interesting takes there:

Every other team on their remaining schedule (except Northwestern) "is better than Illinois [even] with their starting QB."

"This 'Illinois Defense is so stout' narrative is about to fall apart BIG TIME. ... The Illinois defense hasn't stopped ANYONE yet. They're about to find out..."

Agreed, seemed like his downfield throws were more accurate than short throws.

Also, this offense has the potential to look very different if we get a healthy McCray performing anything like the level he was last year. Soften them up for 3qtrs then let Chase go for the kill in the 4th!

Hahaha, so they are putting themselves into the, "well we must be terrible if Illinois beat us", camp?

Good by me, we've already exceeded (outside) expectations for THE SEASON in our first 6 games.

And I have no doubt if DeVito stayed healthy, we win that by double digits. He was moving the offense before getting injured.
