It's one thing to be rational and another to be of the glass is half empty thinking. Gritty is definitely more the latter along with looking for the worst in everything.
Let me be crystal clear here: it's really not possible for me to be happier than beating Iowa in a slapstick parody of a football game in which neither team scored a touchdown or broke double digits.

I have an Illini license plate frame on my car, and I saw a guy with a Hawkeye sticker on the back of his on the highway today and I honked as I sped by him cackling. That's what it's all about, folks.

And the other part of my brain is genuinely just fascinated by the challenge of Barry Lunney having to make do with Art. Can't wait for next week. It's the hope that kills you, it's the dread that sustains you.

I, for one, appreciate the sanity checks. Some posters have to play that role or it’s just going to be a love fest on here. But I’d disagree with the bold, which is a bit of hyperbole. Some people could watch both starting pitchers pitch a no-hitter through nine innings and then complain about what a boring, terrible game it was without any offense. Last night wasn’t exactly an offensive clinic, but Illinois showed that if a game turns into a defensive street fight, it can win that type of game.

The game's been dissected well enough in this thread, so I want to focus on a topic that always gets my blood pressure up--the Iowa football program and Iowa fans.
First--and no surprise to anyone--Iowa travels really, really well. Sections 106 and 107 were probably at least 1/4 Hawkeye fans last night, and the easiest pejorative to throw at them is that they just aren't very self aware. They were high-fiving and sh*t talking like they were at Kinnick, and those around me were getting legitimately offended when UI fans got on them. 2 squawckers literally came half-way into my row DURING A PLAY trying to find their seats, only to discover they were in the wrong section AND row. (my biggest pet peeve in a sporting event is shuffling through a row of people while a play is in progress--just wait for a time out ffs).

But the real piece de resistance was not only Iowa running out onto the field at the start of the game like they were at Kinnick (cheerleaders, flags, annoying fans, etc.), they did it again to start the second half. On top of that some of their staff started crossing the field while the MI were still marching off. Classless Idiots Out Walking Around.

Yes, I hate Iowa. Yes, I got rejected by a girl from Iowa in my formative years. No, I don't feel like getting over it. ;)

99% sure that there's video of us doing this at Camp Randall. The rest is legit, but maybe let's not throw stones on this point 😆

Part of this is the ridiculous way the locker rooms and tunnels are set up. The fact that the two teams required to run across the field to their own sidelines seems like a fight waiting to happen...

it’s indeed troublesome . we knew it last year .

one other comment about his non fumble : can you even begin to think about the meltdown in Illini world had that call not been reversed ?
I was really worried that call was going to stand. The ball was just starting to come free as his arm hit the ground. If the blown TD call in the Indiana game stood after review, this one was a possible ‘call stands’. At least that’s how i saw it.

I agree with this - one view looked like it was secure, the other like it was coming out when his elbow hit. Happy for the W

While I was pretty sure he was down, this seemed like a play that would have stood no matter the call on the field. You could hear a pin drop when the referee stepped out to announce the review result. The place exploded and you couldn't hear the rest of the referee's announcement once he said the runner's arm was down.

The ball was not coming loose until after the forearm was clearly down.

The ball was not coming loose until after his forearm was clearly down. But I understand your concern especially when we had Dean Blandino as the game‘s replay expert.

I was reading the official’s lips when the camera crew cut to him at the monitor - as we was pulling away from the monitor he said “ . . . he was down . . “

then again, it could have been “ . . Ferentz is a clown. . . “

With the style of the last 2 games and both being considering "vintage B1G West football", it's surprising that we didn't have any completions to TE's. I can't even recall Tip or Luke being thrown to against Iowa.

I wonder if it's the TE's just not being good enough? Or Lunney not putting them in the game plan? Or Wisconsin and Iowa are that good at covering the TE's?

- Tough to think beyond this game too much without knowing more about DeVito. 0-6 is comfortably in play if he's done, but let's just hold off on that.

- The dark cloud over the game does become a much brighter spot after the win: that was an easy, comfortable victory if TDV had played the whole way. We had way too much for Iowa

- It's hard to recall a game more negatively impacted by the playcalling on both sides. And I'm a Bears fan!

- This is actually the offense Brian Ferentz recruited and built, and....yikes. They just don't really do anything well. We're a very tough pass pro challenge and all things considered they did better than some of our other opponents have, but most of our sacks were more on their OL than our rushers, woof. And we'll get to Art Sitkowski but how is a program like Iowa making a multi-year starter of someone like Spencer Petras?

- Leave it to me to be negative about our defense: there are a LOT of major pieces of what we've built there that won't be here next year and I don't just mean Walters. If Seth Coleman isn't playing on Sundays next year I don't know what GM's are watching. And we know about Witherspoon already.

- I sympathized with Lunney for a lot of this game, I really did. Going one-dimensional against the Iowa D is death. That is a correct thought to have. But the two plays that both should have been game-enders are just unforgiveable playcalls. No one on earth was fooled on the almost-fumble, and the pick before it was just a total failure to correctly calculate the situational value of 3 points.

- Is it possible Pinton just beat out Griffin in practice?

- The thing with Lunney is that he just seemed to resist the reality of the game that he got forced into, losing TDV and also Isaiah which slashes the playbook even further. He kept trying to outsmart a game that had ceased to become a football game, he reacted in the totally wrong way.

- Art seems like a nice kid. And when he's stepping into a deeper throw rather than trying to throw a touch pass you can see where the recruiting ranking came from, he has plenty of arm and is actually throwing those balls, it's not a chuck-and-hope the way it is for more pipsqueak-y QB's. But he's nowhere even close to a B1G QB and hasn't been from the second he stepped on campus. There's nothing there. If anyone saw Bielema's presser this week he made some pretty pointed comments about his willingness to usher people out of the program who don't have what it takes to help the team win, all the way down to the equipment staff. An exception has been made for Art Sitkowski in a way that's strange and now has systemic risk for what should be a special season.

- Not to defend either of them, but Sitkowski is a more usable player in Tony Petersen's system. Lunney exposes everything he can't do. A totally different player than TDV. A guy like that should not be your backup in year 2.

- Is that enough doom and gloom after beating Iowa for everybody!? My god what a game. An offering to the shrine of the B1G West, the division America needs.

- For real though, get well soon Tommy.
The question I have with your assessment of Art as backup situation is how many 5-7 teams (with a recent history of mostly failure) with a new OC are able to bring in two quality (or at least decent) QBs that fit a new system during the offseason? Heck they actually didn’t bring in one technically since TDV came in before Lunney.

Art was brought in for a different system by a new staff. Yes, it would have been nice if he was better (or fit that system better) but not sure QBs were beating down the door of a 2-6 team. Especially one that it seemed was looking more for a backup than starter. Art was a Big Ten QB who I’m sure they felt would show improvement with coaching given that 3 out of 4 of the games he played during his final year at Rutgers were statistically decent at worst.

So, yes, it is less than ideal that Art doesn’t fit the new system, but it is understandable given the circumstances that he is the backup in year 2. I think going forward after this year we’ll be able to remedy that situation and have a QB room where all fit the system. For now, we just have to hope TDV is back or that with a week of planning/practicing, they can put Art in situations where he can be more efficient.
