Illinois 26, Minnesota 14 Postgame

I love the way this pushes back on the notion that a coaching staff needs "their guys" in order to be competitive, which is something I think has been a really toxic idea all over the country.

But our players deserve just as much credit for that as our coaches.

The moment that defines where we are, IMO, was after we got shut out by Wisky last year on Homecoming, Illinois Football, here we go again, and Bielema made those comments about not having any OL recruits in recent classes that were contributing and it really caused a bit of an earthquake in IlliniLand. 2-10, it's all Lovie's fault, rebuilding, trust the process, no one could possibly succeed with the empty cupboard BB was left, can't judge results until year 4, the whole message board culture war all flashed into view.

And then we went to Happy Valley the next week and outlasted the longest game in the history of college football. In that building during that week, the people in our program made the decision that things could be different. They chose the hard way. And now here we are.
I believe those quotes about the lack of O-Line recruits were presented at the time (and in your post) without context of the question being answered.

If memory serves, he was asked a specific question about the future of the roster and said that was something they’d have to address in the off season. It was in no way presented as an excuse for getting beat by Wisconsin or the poor results. The “earthquake” was people taking his comments out of context and he addressed it with the team.

I cannot believe it was only 45k again, the stadium on TV looked incredible.
I refuse to believe that number. It was both fuller and louder in the stadium today. Could have just been there was more to cheer about this game though. Hard to get super hyped in a 9-6 score 😂.

But seriously, it looked WAY better in person this week than last.

I was hoping this would show up. Now to share it with everyone I know to let them know that Bielema Really Gets It. And if you were there and rushed to the exit to go…where?…and missed it, missed singing the Alma Mater with the team, and having Bret talking to you personally, then that’s on you.

For those of us who waited, it was awesome.

I'm sure the nostalgia must be protected at all cost people will be clambering for an extended playoff field this year.

I didn’t understand that today. Where I was, people left after the last interception. Why leave with 1:30 left? 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, I LOVED BB speaking to the fans. The man gets it on such a massive level.

CHAMPAIGN — Like he has all season, Chase Brown carried the load for the Illinois offense.
Brown finished with 233 total yards on the day, and Illinois rode him for 41 carries and 180 rushing yards in a 26-14 win over Minnesota that made the Illini bowl eligible for the first time since 2019 and kept them in a tie for first in the Big Ten West.
“I’m extremely proud of him,” Lineman Alex Palczewski said. “The entire offensive line being able to block for him, we know that if we’re able to just do our job and get him on the safety he’s going to make something special happen.”
Brown was the focal point of an offense that had 472 yards against a defense that entered the day second in the country in points allowed and first in total defense. Brown opened the scoring with a 40-yard touchdown catch on a wheel route from Tommy DeVito.

Brown has 1,059 yards this season. He’s the fastest Illini to get to 1,000 rushing yards in a season and has now climbed to No. 6 on the Illinois career rushing yards leaderboard.
Illinois opened the scoring with a nine-play 75-yard drive that ended with DeVito finding Brown for a score to put the Illini up 7-0 with 10:56 left in the first.
DeVito started the game by completing his first nine passes and finished 25 for 32 for 252 yards and a touchdown in a return after leaving last week’s game against Iowa with an ankle injury.

Such a solid dominating performance by the beloved.......The stats were overwhelmingly in the illini's favor , but the major stat was the 26-14 final score ...

Rest up , heal up and be ready to detassle the jerkers...........6-1 sounds awesome , but 7-1 with a fully recovered squad sounds so much better..............

LET'S GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tony Eason, Jason Verduzco, and Nate Schellhause were all 65% or better in a season, but DeVito is tops in completion % to date. No Illini connected for over 50% until the 70s
Hot take: he'll get a shot with a pro team. His instincts and decision making are exceptional. Some pro teams may look solely at physical measureables, but he seems to have "it."

I was around for '83, '89, '90, and '01. In each of those seasons it was clear by the first weekend in October that the team had something special. '07 was nice but had some October stumbles (Michigan, Iowa.) And '11, of course, went from 6-0 to a dumpster fire by early November (the sword of Damocles always seemed to be hanging over the Zooker's teams.)

I don't know if I'm just getting old and grumpy, but since the Indinia game I keep telling myself that this team is overachieving and isn't comparable to those earlier teams. Then Wisconsin raised my eyebrows. And Iowa was a rock fight gut check. All the while I kept telling myself that if they handled Minnesota in mid-October I'd feel differently.

And I do. There's something happening here, as Stephen Stills once sang. But what it is ain't exactly clear / There's Chase Brown and our D with a gun over there / Tellin' me (and opponents) that we got to beware.

Here are the best Illini starts since the epic 1963 season Rose Bowl champions:

1963: 5-0-1
1982: 5-2
1983: 10-1
1989: 7-1
1990: 6-1
2001: 10-1
2011: 6-1
2022: 6-1

This fall is tied with 2011 and 1990 for the third best start in 59 seasons since the '63 team. If the boys win in Lincoln in two weeks they'll be tied with '89 for the second best start.

Third best. Maybe, two weeks from now, second best. 59 seasons. I'm 56. I can't get my head around this.

There's something happening here. :illinois::chief:
