Illinois 26, Nebraska 9 Postgame

It really is so nice to watch competent football for a change! Great adjustments by the staff in the second half. Really scratching my head on some of those first half offensive play calls. Why run gadget plays against Nebraska of all teams? Anyway, so great to still care about football in November! Somebody pinch me.

I'm sure all of this will be compiled more officially as the weekend progresses and as next week begins, but if my math is correct, here are some fun stats:

Illinois' defense has only allowed 17 total points in the second half. This includes only one TD in the 4th quarter all year (stupid Indiana game...). We've outscored our opponents 84 to 17 in the second half.

I don't care what anyone says about who we've played, or any other garbage, that's just incredible.

Our halftime adjustments have been on point this year.

I actually read it as having so much faith we were worried something had happened. The conversation would have been way different had it still been Smith...
I saw legit concern regarding the play calling, especially the gadgets and WR screens. Otherwise lots of good thoughts.

Far more common to come to the postgame thread and see the slightest bit of criticism portrayed as ā€˜toxicā€™ or ā€˜non-believingā€™.

We have been awful for decades. Allow a little slack please. Love this team.

lol I remember some folks clutching their pearl necklaces regarding Palmer for today's game.

but seriously though, our defense is flat out lights out incredible / or a thing of nightmares if you're not an Illinois fan.

Outstanding win and it could have been even a bigger beat down if our OC would have called a better game.

Not sure you can blame OC's play calling in 2nd half. Coach B seemed gracious not to run up the score on the home team in front of their fan base. To me thats showin g some class or grace if you will.

A backup quarterback is not an automatic shutdown. He's on scholarship too.

17 second half points allowed for the season. Unreal.
Not automatic, but usually makes a big difference. I seem to remember people saying after Iowa how different it would have been if TDV hadnā€™t gotten hurt and saying prayers heā€™d be back against Minny. If I recall, Art is on scholarship too.

To eliminate any recency bias , I compared this yearā€™s D against every single Illinois D in the modern era across subjective metrics and itā€™s not particularly close. We are witnessing the best defense in program history, with weak offensive teams / schemes like Michigan St and NU still to come.

Must clean up penalties- almost 3x as many penalties as Nebraska today and over 2.5x as many penalty yards today.

Lunney needs to quit dressing up as a sus OC for Halloween.

I wish their QB didn't get injured. It was setting up to be an interesting game. Still think we would've clamped down and won it.

This is a game the coaches love. Get a comfortable win, but still quite a few things to work on this week in practice.

BTW I just want to comment that every time my GF left the room Illinois started playing badly so she was required to remain in the living room during game action. She wandered off when Williams fumbled and came back for the defensive takeaway right after. Also we started dating in June and now it's the best season I've ever seen so far. Coincidence? I don't think so šŸ˜
