Podz definitely lighting it up and I’m happy to see it. I don’t think he’d have the freedom to take those shots and dominate the ball here. Just not a fit and us fans are very short tempered on hero ball.

Also curious about his defense, the primary factor in earning minutes here.

Podz was obviously not going to be the "go out and get 30 a game" guy here because Shannon Jr. is a thing, Coleman Hawkins is a thing, etc. Of course we'd love to have him all the same, but he is not here, he seems happy where he is. He will likely have a mix of great, good and subpar games depending on the night. Wish him the best.

Podz transfer reminds me of Scott Haffner from the mid '80s. Talented guard who didn't get the minutes he wanted in a talented and experienced backcourt (Douglas, Altenberger, Wysinger) that also included fellow freshman Glynn Blackwell.

Haffner moved on to Evansville after his freshman year, where he became one of their all-time greats (once scoring 65 points in a game), but was never going to be featured like that as an Illini (competing with future Top 5 NBA draft pick Gill, not to mention Bardo, Smith and Blackwell, for playing time).

And his kid played against Illinois Friday night. Man, I’m old. :)

You would assume him, Curbelo, Bosmans-Verdonk, Hutch & Grandison all did.

Damn that's a long list. Not even counting the main starters at the end of the yr.
Omar Payne too, no matter how much he frustrated us

Bill Snyder was pretty notorious for withholding championship/bowl rings from players when they would transfer out of spite, certainly hope Underwood isn't like that!

Looks like better competition and the road caught up to Podz. SC got blown out by Utah State and he had 12 points on 3-11 shooting. Only took three shots from 3!(hit 2), so wouldn’t be surprised if running him off 3-point line wasn’t at top of scouting report. He did have 4 rebs, 3 assists and 2 steals but also 3 TOs.

That seems like a lot of guards....good ones also...

The other aspect to this is that Podz’s teammates are also up against tougher opponents so they aren’t as effective as a team as they were against lower competition, which may mean they are less effective (without looking I assume the team total score was much lower than the two previous games) in getting Podz the opportunities he might get with a better set of teammates (e,g, The Illini).

Trying to say it’s not all on Podz

Very true. I like Podz and hope he does great. But I didn’t hear people giving credit to his teammates when they were using his numbers after 2 games to say how much we’re gonna miss him or having him ready to enter the portal again to step back up in class. To me the two telling things were the big drop in FG% and the large decline in rebounds.

Again, I’m rooting for him. I just think the transfer was a good thing for him, and he’s at the right level now to get plenty of playing time and develop his game.

Watching Curbelo in St John's game. Looks like a big high school and still only half full.

Also watching....St. Johns team includes AJ Storr. Rafael Pinzon, who I believe was a high school teammate of AC is also on the roster.

Grandison fits in with Ryan Young and nobody else on this Duke team....

What an odd landing spot! It had to be about academics and telling his grandkids he played there, because he doesn't fit. Slow, sluggish, non-athletic.

Maybe he is supposed to stand in a 3 foot circle on offense and not move. Seems like they'd just leave him back on defense and play 4 on 5 if that was the plan.

I liked Grandy a lot, but still a head scratcher as far as playing time, and individual success.

Then again if I could play for Duke, I'd consider it....

Disagree. He seems to be playing more than decent positional defense. Gonna be interesting with Scheyer and his less than exemplary D background.

Grandy's shot will start to fall and he'll be exactly what he came there for: A key veteran role player on a uber talented, young team. I hope he loses every game.

Grandy does look out of place. Shot looked terrible. Slow on D. Not sure if he made the floor yet in second half.
Maybe he finds his niche later in the year.

He wanted a business degree and he gets to go to Duke and get a free MBA from one of the best business schools in the country. I'd day he is doing quite well.

the one stretch I watched he got beat bad on a backdoor cut for a bucket....reminded me of his D while playing for the Illini.........He's a 3 pt specialist and that's about it .........I hope he has a good year but i cried no tears when he announced for the portal.........JMHO

I'm very happy with the Illini roster except for Luke's injury .......When Luke comes back we will be 10 deep with so many interchangeable parts and skills.....

LET'S GO ILLINI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was actually pretty decent on defense here, not great but certainly not bad. Plus he was also one of the best passers on the team and could finish drives well on the few occasions that he took them, so not exactly a 3pt specialist either.

Thanks for posting......he did have moments for sure , but i wouldn't be playing him now ahead of any of the 9 Illini in the rotation now.......and he really didn't play much decent defense at all ......
Once again , thanks for giving your opinion , and like my opinion , they are just that .............Opinions..........

Moving on now ..............JMHO

Did anyone see Podziemski speaking about Trent Frazier after one of Santa Clara's games? I think I saw it on Twitter. The interviewer asked him a question and he brought up Frazier and how much he helped him. Went on and on. Then the interviewer changed the subject because he clearly didn't know anything about Trent Frazier or why Podziemski was talking about him. LOL
