Because the screener was Danja’s man, fighting over it was the better play in my opinion. Any other player but Danja would have switched onto the shooter.
Disagree. Seems to me that trying to fight over it would have been a sure foul, and Young shot before Dainja could react. Again JMO.

Listening to the press conference, I like Kevin Willard, very complimentary of our coaches and team... has a bit of an edge to him too.

Also, he's kind of funny. I can see he and Brad in a mutual admiration society.
Those 10 beers that Willard said he'd drink after the game should take the edge off a bit

Maybe i'm getting older, but shame on the Maryland AD for not getting on the loudspeaker for throwing things on the court, and yelling obvious obscenities towards opposing players. I would imagine there were several youngsters in attendance, and they don't need to hear that. I guess it's what i would expect from the Wash DC area. Absolute trash. The Kevin Warren lead Big 10 has been an embarrassment overall.

I love how Purdue opens home to Minnesota, MSU opens home to Northwestern, and we open away to #22, undefeated Maryland lol.

Ah well, helps the young guys grow up early. Will pay dividends later on.

To be honest, though, I believe Maryland wasn't ranked at all preseason.

Just got home from the game. Thumbed through the comments. Nothing novel to add, really. We came out very soft on D and that put us in a hole. Props to Willard and the Terps. They were jacked from the beginning, active and intense on D, moved the ball well, and penetrated. We didn't, until around the 30-minute mark. That said, it was our game to win down the stretch and, still, we didn't. The delta IMO was someone like Young who wanted the ball and has some seasoning, and our freshmen learning to play in an environment like this. BTW, I think this Maryland team played to its ceiling tonight. We're a long way from ours.

Also, Coleman Hawkins: man. The difference between seeing him in person here last January and tonight is incredible. He carried us for 30 minutes tonight and kept us in it. Someone noted he has become our facilitator. He has, and he does everything. He needed help, and needed it earlier, tonight. Skyy and Epps will be great but they're doing freshman things. Dain settled down and was a force down the stretch.

Finally, the environment The arena was probably 75% full. But the student section was packed and they were loud. The arena was very loud. It was no doubt very intimidating to our guys but they looked unfazed to me by and large. I'm glad they had to open the BT in this environment. For the frosh, it's a well-needed bucket of cold water. Got it over with against a good team.

As for the foul-mouthed rants, throwing debris at our bench (while their team was ahead, no less), the PA announcer weakly asking that they not do so, etc... I was unsurprised. I've seen it before. (lol, the late-20-ish rubes behind us were screaming at that point re the debris that BU was stalling to freeze the Maryland player at the FT line. Oh... also, quote of the night from them during the halftime salsa-dancing entertainment: "Now, you see, this shows that Maryland has culture. Illinois doesn't have culture like this.")

Also, rubes sitting behind us when Coleman had a steal and did a reverse layup, quieting the crowd: "That guy's rrrrrealllly good."

On our way into the arena my Illini compadre and I were walking the concourse to get to our seats when some male students passed him, saw his ILLINOIS sweatshirt, and said "F--k Illinois" as he passed. Terrapin hospitality. Then again, on our way out, as we were swept along in the student crowd, we got into conversation with a couple female students who were kind, happy they won but really amazed they beat us, and invited us to the bar with them. I told them that we're old men and need to go home to bed. "Nooooo. You gotta come with us!", they protested. "What's your mascot? Do you guys still have the otter?"

How can a 56-year-old man be angry be angry with a fan base including two such friendly, disarming, 20-year-old blondes? Well, I can, of course, and am. ;)

In conclusion: meh. We lost a game we easily could have won, against a team that played lights out. It's now December 3rd. I can't remember the last time I felt this good about our team on December 3rd. Play for 40. Clean it up. Don't be soft on D. Now go to Manhattan and beat Texas. :illinois:

Maryland arena is an example how to arrange students. They get one side of the floor the side with the announcers. Then behind the basket students to the roof.

I would move their band to on of the side sections. The only noise in their arena came from the student section

Yes, but Mayer should be contributing more than just helping wear them down.
Agree. I trust that BU knows what he is doing however, Mayer has been disappointing. I am tired of the excuses about adjusting to a new team (like everyone else on this team). I wonder how much tick he would get if Luke were healthy. We were better with DD in the game.

Thought about the game on the drive home
The 4 plays I like to have back

TSJ missed dunk. That would have swung the momentum in our favor

The goal tending

Fouling a 3 point shooter 2 times in a game

The thing that this team has not developed is how to close out close games. This team might have more talent but last year’s team knew how to win the close game. Need for this team to learn that

Also you are not going to win many games putting a team in the bonus as early as we did. I did not have the benefit of replays so I am not sure how bad some calls were

Honestly their crowd in person didn’t seem too loud. Probably a little louder than O$U but no where near Mackey
They were easily silenced aswell, when we were hot

The worst part was, he had the ball.
Are you saying that wasn’t a foul? Can’t reverse bear hug a guy to get to the ball. OK, not quite that bad, but that is a foul that will called all day. Just not a smart play by Hawkins.

I’ve not been a CoHawk lover, but he’s playing at such a high level it is crazy. He’s had a few inconsistent games, but these last two have been crazy good. He and Shannon are a great one-two punch. Add in RJ and that is a 3 amigo combo that can take the team far. Just need to get all the other pieces around them firing on all cylinders n

As to the officiating, I very well could be the only person on here who didn’t think it was terrible. Perfect? Not even close. Missed calls? Sure, but on both teams. For the most part, they let the guys bang. And then posters here complain they call the ticky-tack fouls. Those reach-in, Ticky-tack fouls are ones that will always be called because they are easy for the refs to see. Some of the Mayer and Epps fouls fell into that category. The Hawkins foul on the 3-point shooter will be called all day long no matter how the game is being called. Illini players need to realize that. Never going to have a perfectly officiated game — especially in the B1G. And sure home team go the benefit of some “inconsistencies,” but worse officiating ever like I’ve seen posted? Not even close. And hopefully Epps and Mayer (his first B1Gl conference game too after all) learn from the game.

I agree, was going to drive 3 hours to the game and take my daughter. Glad I didn't, classless fan base. Several of them caught on camera giving our players the finger.

Welp I told you I'd be here win or lose so here I am. Unreal game...pretty obvious that both of these teams are under-ranked. Insanely jealous of your depth and frankly just your roster – I'm happy we played you today and not in a month. Hawkins is special.

Really fun game, high-level basketball. Will be rooting for y'all the rest of the year because fk most of the other Big Ten teams and fanbases.
Appreciate you stopping by that was a "game" your seniors balled out and our freshman still need some seasoning. Wish we had you in Champaign but I'd love a rematch in BTT. Best of luck rest of season keep making this loss look "good" for us.

On refs....agree with ' for most part let them play"...

I just thought they let Terps play a little more freely than they let us... and it shows in free throws

Crass-ness came with the cleverness, y'all just liked it more when it was against Duke and UNC! Not that I blame you. But ESPN literally wouldn't air a Duke @ MD game until JJ Reddick left because of how loud the "F u JJ" chants were.

Saw a comment in here earlier about "how dare students yell the F word at a player" like that doesn't happen at every single big-time college athletics event anywhere in the country.
Eh we lost and people are salty. Throwing shitt on floor was bush but students having "vulgar" chants is what makes college basketball great. I hope Coleman drains threes in your face to shut them up next time but I'll never not have fond memories of you taunting JJ Reddick. Fu ck that guy and his stupid face and f.u.c.k Duke.

Heck yeah!

I said this last night but will repeat it for those crappy morning-after feelings…you guys are absolutely loaded. I’m just glad we dont’t need to see you again in two months. Y’all are going to be scary good once everyone is healthy and in the meat of B1G play.

Officiating was abysmal tonight. Guys battled through it. This is the type of game we will win in March.
Agreed. There was a short moment at the beginning of the second half where it looked like the hinges might come off due to some of calls on Illinois. Dainja was just called for a foul on a breakaway for running and Frazier brought him back to keep him and other players (as well as myself through the tv) from losing it. Not sure what he said but I believe it was towards Dainja and Hawkins and it worked. Kept their heads in it. Love this staff!

Great game. Winnable, but onto the next. These losses help us in the long run.
