Agree. I trust that BU knows what he is doing however, Mayer has been disappointing. I am tired of the excuses about adjusting to a new team (like everyone else on this team). I wonder how much tick he would get if Luke were healthy. We were better with DD in the game.
This team will be even better if Mayer starts contributing, so I think it’s absolutely the right move for coach to be positive and keep giving him minutes in hopes of building up his confidence.

Raph Davis on post game show was adamant that they left Epps open on purpose and also went as far as to say Scott could have contested but was "clearly" indifferent as a defender. However, what I see is Scott pointing at Epps and yelling for someone to pick him up, then started to go contest himself but knew he'd be way too late and thus switched his focus to finding +someone to defend/box out.
On purpose? That is an interesting strategy considering how they played defense the rest of the game.

Yep, he said Maryland knew he was having a rough game and purposely did not bother to guard him. Paraphrasing, of course.

Biggest play of the game in my opinion Was when Reese got the rebound and kicked it out for 3. I think the game was tied at the time And we had 3 guys around the ball and he came up with it

Here is a (rough) recording of the play.

You be the judge. He tied him up when they were facing each other, then the guy turned. I say he has rights to the ball if his hand is on it in a legal position to start with.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree. I thought it was a foul in real time and thought it was a foul in regular time. Slo-mo it might not be as obvious , but has his left hand on his back and reaches around when still more behind him than on the side. When he does get hand on ball, he is more on the side like you said but foul was already committed.

Like CH’s foul of the 3-point shooter, just not a smart play by him. They had battled back from 10-point deficit to tie it with 7:30 minutes left and he reaches in while in the backcourt. Like I said, I thought it was a foul, and that play will be called a foul 95% of the time. CoHawk played a great game, but that was not a smart play.

Tough road game. Every time the Illini made a run Maryland answered with a big shot. Early 2nd half fouls on Illini set tone for the end putting Maryland at the line for 2. Down the stretch the ball needed to be in R.J.'s or Shannon's hands instead of the freshman. I am concerned about Mayers play. The other thing I have noticed lately is putting the other team at the foul line, the Illini's inability to shoot above 70% at the line, it has hurt them. Build on this game, lessons learned and move on to Texas!
Fouling 3-point shooter twice was bad basketball by Illini, but I think they were 7-8 from line last night.

That was a bit of a Harden play. I suppose he shouldn't have his hand so close to the ball handler. But I'm not sure I like that sweep through and throw your arm into the defender being called. My memory tells me that's not normally something that is called by college officials?

He got punked a bit at most. Epps' foul on the jump shooter was bad. Running out and contesting and running him over is far worse of a mental infraction.

I think the CoHawk 3-point foul is called more often that not in college. Just can’t hit him on arm like that no matter how soft or you leave yourself open to getting called for foul. But as I pointed out in a previous post, it was the game situation that made it truly a dumb foul. Really bailed them out.

I’m not saying officiating was great — is it ever in the B1G? — but not nearly as bad as all the griping in game thread. They let them play for the most part and bang. But where Illini got in trouble is they seemed to think that meant they wouldn’t call reach in type fouls. Those are much easier for refs to see and will almost always be called. And take away the free throws from the two fouls on 3-pointer shooters and MD only out shot Illini by 4 at line (12-8). That’s pretty damn equal in a road B1G game.

also funny one where CH was shoved to the ground out of bounds on the baseline directly in front of a ref. TV TO called, ref trying to help CH up and explaining why he didn't call anything and Coleman just stayed down and was shaking his head No. pretty hilarious.

frustrating because it was winnable despite a fumbly, disjointed 1st half. clearly still finding their way but this will be a fun journey to follow this season

Hand related fouls are the easier ones to call. Play defense with your feet and anticipate. Sometimes people just make good shots.

Not sure it was mentioned, but Luke Goode changes the outcome of last night. I look forward to his return when healthy! We have plenty of firepower until then, but his grit, toughness, and leadership.

Whether it was a foul or not, it was not a smart play. Any reach in risks a foul. Not a good play in the backcourt. Coleman has a tendency for reach fouls when they are not necessary. He seems to be getting better but with his size he should just keep his arms extended.

It would have been nice if Shannon made that dunk and they had called the foul on it. That could have had an effect on our mojo if that happened. Plus as well as Hawk played that silly backcourt foul stopped an impressive run and put the on the line. Those kinds of fouls and fouling 2 three point shooters hurt us tonight and in the Virginia game.
Agree with the above. In a one possession game, mistakes like these are magnified. I’d add in the offensive foul on Dainga running down the court as another possession lost due to lack of awareness.
While Clark was generally solid, his going 0-10 against Syracuse took away his aggressiveness, as did the loud home crowd. MM also had a couple lazy reach in fouls I wouldn’t expect from a veteran player.
Very impressed they had the grit to come back. Further evidence the ceiling for this team is very high.

That was an incredibly hostile loud as hell crowd and we were right there until the bitter end. I am not going to dwell on this road loss at all tonight. Just hope our guys stay healthy and continue to evolve.

That the Maryland fans were so ramped up against The Beloved is a testament to the Illini and the reputation that the Orange has built around the League and the Nation.

The result of this game really doesn't mean much as far as the Season goes. Bigger games await all down the line. But this was valuable as a learning experience for the young Illini talent who were introduced into the Big Ten Road Pressure Cooker and who in general held up well.

And also, for when Madness Time comes. .. a 'pressure' and electric atmosphere and as the Illini continue to blend and learn how to jell together.

This Season is going to be FUN.
