Well, happy to see an esteemed member here speak truth to power.
I still am stuck on the premise that it is the players‘ sole responsibility to provide leadership while the well compensated CEO can sit back and fire pot shots at the employees. Never worked for me in my business career.
I agree with you that using the media in that manner might NOT be the best motivational tool to motivate some folks. But he’s a human being…AND Honestly, I think he was just plain exasperated at that point.
If those guys were acting like that for two practices in a row and then the letdown
that we all witnessed…who wouldn’t have been upset? He probably felt he had exhausted all/most remedies at that point.
I feel like Underwood is a modern, analytics-informed, pragmatic-minded, authentic coach that let’s ‘em play…but he’s also an old school guy at heart. And guys like that don’t play when it comes to effort and being mentally alert. I honestly think Brad would be way more old school if he could get away with it …but it is clearly a very different world…and he can’t be. Lol.
Btw.(I mean that in a good way…not some toxic, abusive…last days of Knight…I mean Nero…type stuff)
As far as the leadership deal…he didn’t call anyone names or anything. He just called them out for their lack of: effort, focus, and leadership…all fair criticisms. Honestly, I thought it was tame compared to what you see from a lot of coaches.
* Does anyone really think it is asking a lot to ask a couple of upper classmen who both played in the National Championship game to lead the younger guys?? These guys are winners. They have the tools to do that. They just aren’t doing it consistently…
*Not to go off on an tangent, but I think with this particular group he probably struggles at times to NOT reign them in on offense more than he does…Yet, he is pragmatic enough to know he must adapt to suit his personnel. Generally, coaches are control freaks and it probably goes against his nature at times. I can’t prove it …but I just think it is true. Lol. For ex. SpreadOffense was less freelance then the 5-out stuff we fall back on now. In other words, I think he likes to let them play…but it is also a personal challenge to relinquish SOME of that control.)
