I have a feeling that we are not done yet in the portal. Good times are ahead for this team. We have our coach back and this is a pretty solid class. Can't wait till spring ball already!

Does anyone have a nice, concise summary of what BB still wants/needs (between now and June 2023) to make it a really, really good recruiting season? And I mean beyond these 22 we expect to sign today........i.e. a class that would put us in the Top 33 nationally (just ahead of Missouri and Iowa).t

On3 has us sitting at roughly #44 right now.
I'm only repeating what I read on this board but, Hill today, Elzy in January, and a surprise lineman would probably do it. I don't pay close enough attention to how all the other teams are doing, but there has to some number of players that won't sign. I'm still getting used to this Early Signing Period trend. I wonder what the percentage is of the top 2000 rated recruits will sign early?

Football you need good players to win. However the big difference between basketball and football is freshmen have a smaller impact on the game. You need a coaching staff who can develop them.

With that said which recruits can make immediate impact and how would you grade this class so far based on our needs?

I have seen Hill play many times & he is over rated. Definitely not a 4 or 5 star. Big ego & not a big loss if he goes to Purdue.

Even if so its important to win some of these for the perception of the program. Scouting is obviously the most important part but this class is still currently last in the Big 10 for avg recruit ranking. At some point you want to show you can win more than one of those battles in each class.

Seems surprising. Would we have gotten him if we still had Walters? I figured he would go to Louisville.
We might have. From what I’ve gleaned looking at a Purdue board since Walters got hired, they were in some serious need for DL. That might have been the kicker.

What's happening with Schuster? It seems from other posts, Lott and Illini may be parting ways, but didn't know if we were still in good position with Schuster...

Re: Hill. Wouldn’t it be quite odd for a kid who has had an extremely quiet recruitment to suddenly pull an extremely loud stunt for no particular reason? Seems contradictory to me.

Yeah. I still fear a Michigan flip, but this Jyaire Hill "saga" has a big "trust the experts" element with a bit of "we can't be wrong here." Everyone is trying to psychologically analyze a kid who says little.

Not saying the experts are wrong though. Also insert "the quiet ones are craziest one" meme.

If Jyaire Hill had no interest in Illinois this is not a story. The young man has done nothing wrong so I am not going to attack his character wherever he chooses. These are young men and for most this is the biggest decision they are making in their lives up to this point. Mizell was carrying baby gators under his arms when he picked the Gators. I am on the sidelines watching and entertained either way....

I’m sure Hill let the staff know that’s why guys like 0440 knew it was still Michigan even after his top 5 graphic. He’s been to campus 9 times I don’t think he’d drag them on.

Is the new punter supposed to start pretty immediately? I don't follow recruiting much but at games this season, I heard whispers of an awesome incoming punter, I think.

I want to emphasize statement this is NOT meant to slightly our local and in-board guys. I am just some random guy on a PC.

Harkless decomitted from Illinois in August when Walters was on the staff. I don't think he was coming back to Illinois either way
I know when he decommited. From reading the Purdue board though, it appears that they had no real traction with him until Walters reached out to him upon getting Purdue job.

Purdue had offered him while Walters was with Illinois. I totally agree Walters sold him to join. My point in other post was that he moved on and Illinois was not going to land him. The young man has now committed to his 3rd school in 3+ months. Hope it all works out well for him
