If any of the B1G AD's got the job, the other schools would all get mad, and not unjustifiably so.

and why Phillips is the natural answer now that he's ACC Commish and has been away from NU for a couple years. And there will still be people who think hes going to favor NU whenever he can. And Phillips is the right age for it.

For whatever it's worth, I think he deserves far more criticism for CHANGING the league's championship criteria to put Ohio State in the football title game than he does for HOLDING to the league's criteria in naming Michigan the sole champion. But he set the precedent with one and then didn't follow it with the other, that much is true.

Everyone knows who the real 2021 champion was, even Hunter Dickinson himself. I don't lose a moment's sleep over that.

But anyway, it was absolutely the COVID thing. The Big Ten is a conference that settles things behind closed doors and speaks with one voice. That's what Jim Delany built. When the new guy screwed that up in such a high-profile fashion immediately, he was done, there was never any coming back from that.
I don’t blame Warren for holding to the championship criteria in basketball- I blame him for not making Michigan make up their games - at least 2 of the 3 they missed. Every other team made up their games even if it meant some every other day games. Michigan got to dictate when and if they wanted to play- which is a weak commissioner

Warren as CEO/President of the Bears will be a big improvement over Ted Phillips, ND grad and former bean counter at Ernst & Young. I knew a guy at Arthur Andersen back in the 1980's, who was in Ted Phillips class at ND, and in 1988, when Phillips got his first named position at the Bears (assistant GM ? ) , was so mad at his "luck" then, as he said Phillips was nothing. Average student at best. Far from the top 25% in the class.
Tim Beckman would be an improvement over Ted Phillips

This kind of news doesn't get leaked if its not already a done deal.
He's gone.
Also, could be a trial balloon by the Bears to see if people like the idea.
Or, Warren could have leaked it himself to get the PR snowball rolling downhill for him.
Warren helped the Vikings get a new building and all the hurdles to jump over. If the Bears want to build a new palace at Arlington Heights, he's the right man for the job.

Warren got off on the wrong foot with COVID, then the Michigan thing got him sideways.

But, give him credit for moving well in the "eat or be eaten" conference canabalism and making the B1G a major player on the national scene, and not the Midwest Division of the SEC.

meh
when do the Bears ever care what Joe Fan wants ?

hes the perfect fit.
the Bears leaked this to take pressure off the crappy end of the season and because hes a great hire for them right now
Warren knows better than to leak this stuff without the Bears blessing

On all of the "little" things, Warren seemed to get almost always get it wrong. But I think he hit it out of the park with the media deal and expansion. I'll give him all the credit on that, and hope that he is equally successful on the business side of the Bears. Would love for a stadium that is on par with what they have up in Minnesota. Hopefully the next conference commissioner does a bit better with the day-to-day decisions and management of the conference athletics.

Just when you think the Bears couldn't get any worse... McCaskeys need to sell the team.to someone with money and a brain who wants to win and will build a new indoor stadium.. About done with the NFL along with the NBA...

Methinks Warren gets too much credit for B1G expansion. Like most businesses, good ideas are formulated, studied, validated and strategized below and presented to the CEO who, as the face of the company, gets credit for the idea and it's implementation.

I think Phillips would be pretty impartial … I mean, the guy DID go to Illinois before overseeing significant progress as AD at Northwestern! He seems more of a businessman.

Phillips is the best candidate, by far.

Warren has not been as poor of a commissioner as some make him out to be. Then again, he gets too much credit for expansion and media deals. Having one boss, instead of 14 (16), sounds like a no-brainer.
