Coleman needs to start taking shots instead of passing. It's almost as if he's listening too much to folks telling him to pass first instead of look for his shot. He passed up a few open ones tonight that could have helped us.
Re Hawkins: You’ve taken some heat for this post, but Underwood agrees with you and keeps saying so, as evidenced again by his last answer at tonight’s presser.

However, the increase in attempts needs to be those high percentage paint shots he’s too often passing up.

His three-point shot selection just as perplexing. It seems like he doesn’t want to take wide-open ones within the offensive flow - then at some point he remembers the coach told him to shoot x-number of treys, so he randomly chucks 2-3 super long ones to check that box off his chore list.

He did do a little better this game at driving into the lane, but he still seems single-minded about passing it out once he’s there. There is no reason this guy shouldn’t be averaging 14-16 pts per game.

Not a good look.
it seems as if what mayer says and what he does are contradictory. he called out guys a few weeks ago in the postgame presser for laughing on the bench in the same game I saw him also laughing on the bench. this display here tonight is another example of immaturity and lack of leadership from a senior former national champion. in the postgame interview tonight he says the players are really close off the court while a few weeks ago he says they have some internal issues to work out. says he wants to be BIG defensive player of the year then plays lazy defense and takes plays off. he really seems like an odd cat to figure out

His shot selection plus timing of his turnovers were just deflating, no matter how you slice it. Some if his passing seemed out of rhythm, even if it didn’t directly result in a TO. It still broke the flow of the play. He’s not really an effective point forward (IMO). With ( much more) practice, he might envelop that skill but it’s not working.
I feel bad for Coleman on some level. He’s being asked to do too much, I think, but he’s also not getting a ton of help out there. I don’t know how it’s always him that winds up with the ball and five seconds on the shot clock, but he’s had to take so many bailout threes this year I’ve lost count. And he forces a lot of passes but it also seems like guys aren’t ready for what he’s doing a lot of the time. Might be that he’s not attacking from the spots he should be, but that forced pass in the second half to Dain that got picked off, Dain didn’t make any effort to go get the ball. It was just too easy to reach over him and poke it away.

I don’t know how much of that is Coleman freelancing and how much of it is him not being put in a position to succeed, but in large part I think he looks so bad because the team as a whole looks bad and he happens to have the ball quite a bit. But there are guys out there who won’t even look at each other, and you can’t play that way.

The only message I can think of that might land with Mayer, Shannon, and Hawkins is that it’s tough to play your way on to the draft board but really, really easy to play your way off of it. There are a ton of guys out there with fringe first round talent, and I’m pretty sure showing that you’re not engaged, can’t play your role, and aren’t liked by anyone in the locker room isn’t gonna put you over the top. They don’t care about the team and it’s too late to make them care. They just have to understand that playing for the name on the front and playing for the name on the back is actually the same thing.

He is not going to average 16 ppg in this lifetime. He is a below average shooter, does not get to the rim and finish unless it is wide open, and never gets to the line.
Sure, he is passing up layups and doing the pump fake every time even if nobody is near him. We all want him to take the open looks in range and drive to the hole, and stop being a deer in the headlights. Hummell was begging him to be decisive all night.

He is just not a natural scorer like Epps, nor is he a a gifted high level passer.

He is pretty much just a guy who can guard a little bit, hit a shot once in awhile, rebound ok, and has flashes of athletic plays. He is a B level role player starter which isn't all bad.

We need TJS to make this his team and get us 16 ppg a night, not Hawkins.

Personal life, business, athletics; doesn't matter- bs still walks. Words are cheap. Watched his bench performance. Not impressed. That kind of behavior sends a message of "who cares" to teammates. I never criticize a player for having a bad performance on the court. But off the floor "farting around" drives me nuts.

This isn't a team it's a collection of players. 100% on them for not even coming close to running anything resembling an offense or defense.
I don't follow Illini basketball vey closely. Despite that, I want all things Illini to succeed at the highest level. From the outside looking in, it seems that we must have a group of individual players who don't care to follow the training and instruction of their coaches and don't care for each other and want to play as a team. This is not on the coaches. They have not suddenly become incompetent. It is 100% on the team and their locker room culture.

It is absolutely on the coaches. Our coaches are getting paid to prepare and motivate the players and the team as a whole. They're also charged with setting standards for effort and responsibility that haven't been evident in our team's play for quite some time. Plus they decide who plays and who doesn't and they decide what defensive and offensive schemes our team runs. We have looked shambolic on the offensive end during both our wins and losses this season, and our switching defense hasn't worked at all...our coaches' responsibility. Does this absolve the players of responsibility for our current situation? No. But giving our coaching staff a pass for the mess our team is in right now is completely out of line. Brad and company are getting paid handsomely to find the right buttons to push to get our team ready to play hard on defense and efficiently on offense. Our coaches need to perform better.

I agree with your assessment of coaching responsibilities. They have done this well with past teams. Are you saying that the coaches suddenly forgot how to or decided not to perform as required? Which side is most likely going to accept responsibility for their actions? Mature men or teenagers. I have a son who suddenly (and despite the love and direction my wife and I provided) stuck his head up his a** at 14 and didn't pull it out until he was 19. Now he's an stand up guy, a happily married father of 2 with a college degree and a successful professional career. There's no accounting for the teenage mind.

Illini in OC

In. The. Alley.
Agreed the season isn't over...it was just funny to see Bruce so calm and essentially telling illini nation to calm down....I can only dream that we turn the season around like that team in 2003. I was at the !!! kicking we took by Providence at Madison square garden that year and it was demoralizing. So maybe there is hope.
Time for another funeral??

nd a collection of guys standing around the 3pt line with one big problem, THEY CAN'T SHOOT!!
Amen
I recall watching thee first 5 minutes of a Flying Illini game posted here last week - every shot from the paint, not one 3 pointer
We missed 20 3 point shots '
Time to rethink what is going on on offense

100% agreed on the types of shots he should be taking. It's like he's stuck in this bizarre cycle of:

1. I should pass first and help my teammates get theirs
2. My last pass got picked off, gonna shoot as soon as possible
3. My crappy shot selection didn't pan out, better pass again
4. Rinse and repeat

At least if he puts up a shot and it clangs off the rim we have a better chance of regaining possession (as long as the rest of the team crashes the boards, which is another issue). Letting them pick off a pass gives us no chance

Undisciplined, lack of chemistry, flat, out-coached, etc.

From a once promising start, this team can seriously start the conference season 1-9 if things do not click.

Watched the Penn- State - Michigan game
Penn State has 2 or 3 players without the ball constantly moving
We have 2 o 3 players constantly waiting
Maybe we will recapture the 3 point shooting which enabled the UCLA and Texas victories
But with each passing game that is looking less likely.

In presser, BU says the lack of offensive flow is on him. Can’t disagree. Fix it.
+ 1,000

Not to sound like a broken record, but I am tired of “the problem is “ and more than ready for “and here is how we fix it”.

illinin Loyalty can see it, but only BU and HIS team can fix. He chose his players, we didn’t.

I bought tickets for this game back when they went on sale - this was my seven year old's first Illinois basketball game, and I assumed that he'd have a fun time watching a great team beat up on a mediocre/bad team. Boy, was I ever wrong.

At least he now understands what it is to be an Illinois fan.
He saw a great performance by a senior PG as HE beat up on a mediocre/bad team,

If I were still in the corporate world and tried to talk my way out of a bad project performance by blaming my team 100% after I hand picked them and got paid handsomely to do so, I might have been fired on the spot.

yes, I know they are only kids, not adults,

In the first five minutes of the game, TSJ took a man one on one. He dribbled toward the short corner and a trap came. He passed it to Dainja (less than two feet away), and the ball was stripped. What is the point in this? There have been spots this year where TSJ, Epps, others have been able to dribble in the direction of the basket, but that seems to have stopped. They now seem to juke 6-322 times and either A). Chuck up a bad shot or B). Pass it AWAY from the hoop.

You're comparing the predictability, preparation, motivation and resulting performance of mature business professionals to teenagers. Ok.

not really, not everyone in corporate America is a mature business professional and not everyone on the Illini roster is a teenager, some are presumably well compensated young men in their early 20s (the team “leaders“ are 20, 20, 21, 22, and 23)
