St Louis Cardinals 2023

Just sheer speculation here. I think other teams like the Mets will price the Cardinals out of any chance of landing Ohtani even with the extra cash.
If it goes to free agency the Cardinals are not a contender (trade for Goldschmidt and Arenado)

If he likes Los Angeles than Dodgers make the most sense. Get paid (happening wherever), contenders and stay in area he likes.

Dodgers dropped some salary so they won't have to pay a competitive balance tax this season barring any big moves. The luxury tax penalties escalate based on how many consecutive years a team has been over. The Dodgers are dipping below that level and if they choose to add money next season than it starts over again at a lower tax rate. It would be something like 50% overage of the amount this season if they stayed in the area they were the last 2 seasons. Getting below that taxable number this season means they will be taxed at the 20% rate in 2024 if they keep it in the lowest overage area. The rates escalate quickly the more you spend and consecutive years you spend over.

I have no idea where he will go. One team that intrigues me if not staying in Los Angeles and becomes a free agent is the Texas Rangers. Rangers just reloaded there pitching staff this offseason. Depends what they do but of now Odorizzi and Perez would be free agents after the season. The other main guys they brought in are on 1-2 year deals with options. Throw Ohtani's bat into this lineup with DeGrom and him 1-2 pitching that would be something to watch.

From his home in California, Nolan Arenado says he wants to be a lifelong Cardinal

He’s propelled enough swings in his career and already in this workout Friday to know the one he’s chasing. When he connected, the echo from the crack of contact had only just faded when Nolan Arenado, head down and hands already circling back for his next attempt, revealed his enthusiasm with a question for a visitor.

“Get that one on video?”

The visitor had just toggled his iPhone from photo to video in time, so yes.

“Nice,” Arenado said. “That’s the one you’ll want to share.”

“I came here to be here,” Arenado said, referring to St. Louis. “I started a family in St. Louis. My daughter was born in St. Louis. I want to stay in St. Louis. That’s why I came here. I didn’t come here to leave after two years. That was never my plan. I wanted to be here for the long run. I love St. Louis. I love the culture. I love playing here. I love living here. I just want to hold up my end of the bargain in St. Louis. … I got traded here for a reason. I don’t want to be a letdown.”

As planning for the 2023 season accelerated and the start of spring training appeared on the next page of the calendar, it became clearer to Matt Holliday the time he would miss now with his kids to start chasing a future as a coach in a major-league dugout.
He made the decision to resign as bench coach before the role began.

I'll remember fondly the Matt Holiday era as Cardinals bench coach.
Unparalleled level of success. Not a single loss on his ledger.

He probably realized that he wouldn't be able to watch his Son play minor league games. When he was initially hired, I thought it was odd timing for his family life. Maybe one day he will try again.

In advance of Friday's deadline that send the Cardinals and a handful of players to arbitration hearings throughout spring, the club finalized contracts with two members of the rotation and continued to negotiate others with players such as Gold Glove-winners Tommy Edman and Tyler O'Neill.
Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery agreed to terms on one-year contracts for the 2023 season Friday morning and avoided the need for arbitration, according to multiple sources.

Like many, catcher Andrew Knizner knew what kind of offseason addition the Cardinals sought as they looked to fill a hole at the catching position for the first time in nearly two decades.

Relievers Ryan Helsley and Genesis Cabrera, the two players the Cardinals could not reach agreements with before Friday’s deadline, exchanged salary figures with the team late that night. Both pitchers are under contract for the 2023 season, but they will use their arbitration rights to have their salary on a one-year contract determined in a hearing.

First day of the international signing period begins today. Cardinals have signed a young Venezuelan righty named Reiner Lopez, who is ranked at #36 in MLB Pipeline's Top 50 International Prospects List. Here is a portion of the info from MLB.com about Lopez:

Tall and lean with long legs and lots of projection, the six-foot-nine Lopez pounds the strike zone and profiles as a starter. He features a three-quarters to over-the-top arm slot and a simple, repeatable delivery. His fastball sits in the 89-93 mph range and more velocity could be on the way because of his sound delivery and projected arm strength.

For now, his changeup is his best secondary pitch, and he also features an emerging slider. Both pitches need to be polished, but that’s common for pitchers his age. He also throws a curveball.

Lopez, who trains with Douglas Aguiar, has been praised for his poise on the mound and overall makeup. He reminds some scouts of Sandy Alcantara at the same age.

I'm probably in the minority, but I like MO and think we are blessed to have him. I hadn't really thought about pitching for next year. I thought that was a great question, but a problem for next year. We could have a very young staff next year if everything works out with some of these prospects, but that would also mean a very long season.
I believe we are in an interesting time and a great time in Cardinals history. I believe we are entering in a championship window right now and will be for the next few years, some projects show out like we hope and will be in said window for the foreseeable. Pitching will be the thing that will make or break this run we could be on. I don't think we will ever have Ohtani, I just know he will sign with the Cubs and I'm already sick about it.

Sorry for the wall, just wanted to share some quick fire thoughts after watching that fireside chat with MO.

As far as Ohtani I've read numerous articles about him wanting to be on either coast, probably to the highest bidder
Doubt MO or DeWitt would agree to that high of $$$ amount needed to even be in the conversation for him.

I will repeat myself. As long as the Cardinals continue to make appearances in the playoffs with a chance to win the World Series and 3 million patrons continue to come through the turnstyles, ownership will be satisfied.

I am not Anti-Mo. He is what he is. He generates a vast amount of cash for the DeWitt - Cardinals Corp. It is not his job nor desire to go all NY-LA in pursuit of another WS crown. (Much to the dismay of many fans.)

This has the been the rinse and repeat job Cardinals fans have been use to for many years

It is all about the hot team at the right time of the year. Our 2006 and 2011 Championship teams were not our best teams on paper or throughout most of those seasons.
