And we were on our home floor. Playing in front of your fans means a few points a game.
I mean, we technically did get a few points playing at home. It felt like we lost by 20+ points, but it was only 15. The run at the end of the first half was also pushed along by the fans.

In the end, IU simply looked fresher and made most of their bunnies and ft's, something we did not do.

This game vibe felt like the 2021 Loyola game; Couldn't buy a shot. Then Trayce looked like a man among boys. He made us look really bad. Not sure why we didn't switch to double him when he went low. I guess coach said Matt was sick, and then said everyone else is tired after 19 days. Don't like the tired excuse, (thinking coaches need to plan/prepare their team for these stretches), but is is an excuse I guess. Not a good enough excuse for running ZERO offense, ugh. Indiana looked a step faster and played a hand higher than all of our guys tonight. I do love our freshman, but sure wish we had a guard who could really shoot. Let's hope next Tuesday we look like IU did tonight.

Our fans never got a real chance to impact the game. IU kept them quiet, and we didn't do enough to get them involved. Might as well have been a neutral court game.
You should win most of your home games in BIG Ten play if you want to be in the top 4 to 6 in the standings at the end of the year. We haven't even hit our tough part of the schedule. Just my opinion, but at this point, I would be happy if we finished at .500 in the BIG Ten.

The defensive game plan for TJD was insane.

I like how TGG thinks that there was a game plan. Seriously though, this Illinois team is fundamentally flawed. We can't make free throws and we can't make layups. Those are things in basketball. I also really enjoyed the total lack of any type of adjustments to what was clearly not working. Brad tells us that one guy was sick and played slow (didn't stop him from putting him in the game over and over though). Brad tells us the team was exhausted and we had too many games and practices in a row; I'm thinking if you identify that earlier in the week... maybe rest them? I'll be interested to see if this stupidity continues to plague us on and off as the season progresses. Any team that plays us from here on out should just follow the Mizzou and Indiana game plans. Iso against Dainja and go for some close post shots hoping to draw fouls and run backside cuts for easy layups. You don't have to make a perimeter shot as we're allergic to a zone. Defensively, guard us tight on the perimeter and hope we make bad passes (we will). I mean, is the scouting report? We looked totally unprepared to play a basketball game tonight. On the bright side, we made a battered Hoosier team look amazing. They played lights out. Nice to see that kind of effort from SOMEBODY at SFC.

Indiana took it to us on defense. Pressured the ball like they always do and we didn't handle it well. Kept us pushed out and hurried up on offense. Didn't get very many good looks and when we did we missed most of them. Combine that with missing free throws and layups its not usually going to end well. Our defense wasn't as active as it had been lately and they were putting everything in. Not our night just got to move on.
I’ve heard this from quite a few people at this point. And I gotta say:

If they’re pushing us out nearly to the midline we should be exploiting that very foolish decision. If they’re overplaying us that much it should be that much easier to go past them. We more than have the ability to do that at most all positions. If the wings are being overplayed or denied out past 3pt line they should back door Princeton-cut their butts to death.

That’s just basic basketball. You can’t let a team’s defense dictate your offense like that without penalty. It looks like we FINALLY started to figure it out…after it was too late.

So many missed layups and free throws tonight. The intensity was also not fully there at all. Just not very good all around. Good news is-It's just one game! They have been making progress and it's getting closer. Would not be surprised to see Goode come back on Tuesday-if he does not he 100% will be playing against Wisconsin

It don’t matter … He won’t be here 4 years
But in a good way good way, right?

The keys to winning have not changed as far as I consider in well over 100 years. You have to make shots, defend with focus and effort, and rebound with a vengeance. None were done by the Illini tonight with the competence of an NCAA tournament game winner.

But this is just another learning experience for a young team. Grab a win in Columbus and the hope meter will rise again.

We missed 14 free throws and lost by 15. Gotta cash in on the freebies.
Yeah, if we shot 114% from the line we would’ve won.

So much talk about playing the wrong offense, playing the wrong defense, whatever. If we have a couple of guys who refuse to run anything at all on offense and a couple of guys who choose to stand around with their crank in the poodle on D, we’re not winning anything.

Playing teams straight up on D was what everyone yelled for in December. Can’t really complain when they do that and it doesn’t work. So many people think that the right system is a magic bullet. “Hey, Underwood changed the D in 2016 and that worked!” OSU lost the last four games of the season that year while giving up 90 PPG.

Everything else is just window dressing if you don’t play hard and don’t execute. Unfortunately, it looks like there’s more than one guy who was the problem. Good thing half of these guys will be gone at the end of the year.

I think pre-1903, it was a race to who hit the peach basket first. But I feel pretty good about how they'll respond mentally and with some additional recuperation time.

Decided to not post until I had read this entire thread, in order to cool down, gather myself and avoid getting myself put in jail. Not Dan Jail, real jail. I was that pissed. Glad I read through this - two things calmed me down. First, the comments that the Illini played tired. Tired legs worsening our free throw attempts and hurting our ability to finish at the rim. Seems plausible. Second Pru's father being very sick. sad news, pours ice cold water over any passion I was feeling.

Now that my lizard brain has been somewhat pacified, I do want to express several thoughts. Like many of you, the lack of double teaming or even trying a few hard fouls on TJ-D was beyond belief. I seem to recall when Kofi was unstoppable one-on-one, our opponents would triple team him and hack him to death. EVERY OPPONENT. Yes TJ-D is a top flight passer and free throw shooter, but it is possible to rattle him. Even him. Time and again TJ-D would spin by Dain and everybody else, ESPECIALLY Hawkins, would back off like they were afraid of getting electrocuted by Trayce's super powers. Bad coaching (no adjustment) and soft (apparently impossible to embarrass or piss off) players on the court.

Even more exasperating was the Illini players lack of commitment to driving through the opponent to make lay ups. if you drive hard you will make it, and/or get fouled or miss. Driving soft and avoiding contact and trying to toss the ball high off the backboard to avoid blocks is the least likely way to score a layup. 17 misses! Soft, soft, soft.

The descent into hero ball late is understandable. When you are being out hustled and outplayed at both ends of the court most teams fall into that mode, including teams we are pounding.

For tonight's game at least, the team was painfully soft, weak, not up to the challenge on either end. Powder Puff League soft. Softest performance I can remember in 56 years of devotedly rooting for the Illini since my college days long ago in the last century. Hopefully, they will get their legs back...

I think we were tired for the Loyola game as well. We had just played our hearts out in 3 back-to-back games to win the B1G tourney to validate our claim as conference champions over MI. The B1G regular season and tourney is such a meat grinder.

Really hard to watch even a good player like TJD come in and embarrass us at our house.

That’s all I can say

CHAMPAIGN — Indiana went to its All-American big man time and time again, and Illinois couldn’t stop him.
Trayce Jackson-Davis had 35 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks to snap the Illini’s win streak and hand them an 80-65 loss on Thursday.
Illinois (13-6, 4-4 Big Ten) got out to a 4-0 lead, but then Indiana went to Jackson-Davis and he ripped the game out of the Illini’s hands.

He had 13 points in a first half where he made all six of his field goal attempts. That gave Indiana (12-6, 3-4) a 43-33 halftime lead and put them up by as many as 19 in the first period. Through rebounding, post entries and driving, the Hoosiers had 16 of their first 30 shots at the rim. Jordan Geronimo added 13 first-half points as well.

Yep. Offensive game plan wasn’t the problem. If we make half of the free throws we missed and 3 or 4 of the layups we missed and it’s a totally different game.

Just got out worked on defense combined with an awful game plan and no adjustments on that end. I don’t care what Brad says about “we actually tried a double team package a few times”…we could’ve at least shown some a few times or pressed full court a few times to throw them off. Extremely frustrating, this would have truly been a massive win and completed the turn around from our 0-3 conference start.

Ohio State is a must win IMO

1. It is a bonafide basketball game plan to let one guy stay one on one and shut down the others. We have employed this plan vs Michigan and Indiana specifically in the past and been successful. There was a point where Geronimo was 6-6 in the game. That is a problem. We did send a double a couple times, and they still scored.

2. For people complaining about hero ball: when the defense pressures you like that, you attack it through straight line drives to the rim (see every team we played against BU’s first year). Who is our best threat to do that? Shannon. So it might look like hero ball, but you have to get downhill and attack.

3. Obviously we need to make our layups and free throws.

4. I agreed with bardo live that we should have pressed earlier than we did.
