So every team in the conference has to deal with the same thing.
I believe the issue Brad had with IU game scheduling was having to play a team that had more time between games means that team has more time to practice to their scouting. Also the B1G schedule isn’t balanced. Some teams play Purdue 2x, some 1x at home, and some 1x on the road. Variables in time off between games just furthers the imbalance. That imbalance is probably going to tip some teams on the bubble one way or the other this year.

They need to extend the season. If you look at Jan/Feb we play 16 games in 53 days. That is a game every 3.3 days. These are students playing this many games in less than 2 months. Seriously messed up. Brad said as much in a resent presser. Put more games in Nov/Dec or extend the season [more] into March.

They will never move it back due to March Madness. It would have to start sooner. You can't put more games into November/December. You'd run into the same issue then.

Competing with football if starting earlier, not likely TV would like it. OTOH April madness just doesn’t sound right. Maybe April agony?

Talking about Purdue and their freshman guards if we had Kofi this year we don’t lose and think how much better Epps and Harris would be. Having Dane as Kofi backup would have been a dynamic duo. I wonder where Painter will find the next giant.

Haven't there always been variables in time off between games? And the Big Ten has played an unbalanced schedule for years. I just don't understand the consternation over the schedule. I wonder how much Matt Painter is complaining about it this year?

We had the exact same advantage over OSU in our next game. I would guess this balances itself out over the course of the season, or pretty darn close.

In order to actually debate this, you'd have to look at every single team's schedule and analyze where they had an advantage and where they had a disadvantage and then actually see who won and lost games where an advantage occurred. Otherwise, it's nothing more than cherry picking data to support your side/listening to angry coaches who need to blame something besides the refs so they don't get fined.

It has always been unbalanced to some degree, but I think the changing TV landscape has exacerbated the issue in recent years. A stretch like we had with 5 games in a row at a 3-day interval wouldn't have happened in 2013. That said, you're absolutely right that our very next game was against an OSU team coming off the same thing. It does seem to balance out for each team in the end, it's just that the swings are more pronounced from game to game.

As far as the unbalanced slate of opponents (mentioned by the previous poster) - it is what it is. Not much you can do about it. From a B1G record perspective we're on the lucky end this year since our double-plays include the 5 teams currently at the bottom of the standings.

Gillis must only take wide open 3s in the flow of the offense. Why can't our guys off the bench go 7-10 from 3.
Helps having 4th year players that are willing to come off the bench (and due to a redshirt and COVID year, he still has 2 more years of eligibility if he wants it) without heading to the transfer portal or declaring as a non-NBA pro. Fun fact - Alan Griffin (remember that guy?) could have been a 5th year COVID-eligible super senior on this team had he stuck around all that time. I'm definitely jealous of Purdue's ability to retain players well, which helps with multi-year roster building.

Speaking of Alan Griffin and 3 pointers, his performance 3 years ago @ NW was one of the finest 3 point shooting displays in Illinois history. I had to look it up but he was 6 of 8 from 3 in only 20 min.

Wonder what Pete Nance thinks of his transfer to UNC about now. Probably made more money on NIL, but UNC not looking to be much of a contender. 15-7 (7-4) and tied with Duke for sixth in the ACC. Still likely in the NCAA (projected as an 8 seed by Lunardi). Their best wins are Ohio State and Michigan, neither of which are looking to shiny right now.
Nance may have been better on a better team had he stayed at NW.

Caleb Love's 2022 NCAA Tournament looks more and more like a player that went on a miracle sun run. 20 PPG going 53.1 % on 6.4 two point attempts per game and 36 % on 10.0 three point attempts in their 5 NCAA Tournament wins. Went ice cold in their loss to Kansas in the national championship (considering they only lost by 3 after leading most of the game, he basically shot them out of the championship). His TS% this season is right back to being a garbage inefficiency that's defined his career currently at .492 (career to date is .417 -> .512 -> .492 for a career average of .480)

UNC in general looks more like the team that only earned an 8 seed than the team that almost won the national championship. They returned 5 out of 6 players that they were utilizing regularly in the NCAA Tournament, and replaced Manek with a good player in Nance. They had all the preseason hype and entered the season number 1. They have been a massive disappointment, but maybe they'll make another miracle run *shrug*.

This years Big Dance should be anyone's to win. Illini get hot at right time and make a long run. Come uninspired and go home quick.

That’s why I think Brad is rolling with the 3’s. Even if we are a bad 3 pt shooting team if we his 35% in the tourney we will be a tough out.

Two league games tonight:

Wisconsin at Ohio State (OSU favored by 7.5)
Michigan at Northwestern (NU favored by 3.5)

We then have a great weekend slate in the Big Ten!

Saturday Games
11:30 am on FOX - Michigan State vs. Rutgers (New York, NY)
1:30 pm on FOX - Illinois at Iowa
3:00 pm on ESPN - #1 Purdue at #21 Indiana
8:00 pm on BTN - Maryland at Minnesota

Sunday Games
12:00 pm on CBS - Ohio State at Michigan
3:30 pm on BTN - Penn State at Nebraska
5:30 pm on BTN - Northwestern at Wisconsin

Assuming OSU and NU win tonight, these are the standings going into the weekend:

1. Purdue: 11-1
2. Illinois: 7-4
2. Northwestern: 7-4
2. Rutgers: 7-4
3. Indiana: 6-5
3. Maryland: 6-5
3. Iowa: 6-5
3. Michigan State: 6-5
4. Penn State: 5-6
4. Michigan: 5-6
5. Wisconsin: 4-7
5. Ohio State: 4-7
6. Nebraska: 3-9
7. Minnesota: 1-10

Needless to say, those are some insane standings, and it kind of helps us who to root for this weekend:

A) Obviously we need to beat Iowa ... getting to 8-4 would be absolutely huge, considering there is a decent chance that Northwestern and Rutgers could both lose this weekend. It'd put us a full game alone in second place.

B) As alluded to in (A), we need Wisconsin to beat Northwestern and MSU to beat Rutgers at MSG. I think it would do wonders for our seeding ceiling to really break away and establish ourselves as the clear #2 to Purdue.

C) As much as it pains me, I am going to have to root for the Loosiers ... even if we lose AND they win, we'll both still be tied. I'd rather Purdue finally get a second loss and at least make this a race again!

D) Not sure the other games matter THAT much, but I suppose ideally we'd like to see the lower teams in the standings (MINN, OSU, NEB) beat the higher teams (UMD, MICH, PSU).

Say what you want about the quality of our conference, but this has been an entertaining season! I anticipate February to both be insane and also provide a little separation into clear tiers.

My desire to watch Purdue @ Indiana is going to be heavily affected by what the Illini do @ Iowa, lol. That should be a good one, I definitely have a bit of a sore loser streak though where if Illinois loses, I usually don't want to watch anymore games for at least that day and want to focus on something else (exception being the NCAA Tournament).

It's not like it ruins the rest of my day if Illinois loses. More like a few days 😉

Unless the NCAA could make a couple bucks moving to April Anarchy
Push NCAA tourney start to the last week (weekend) of March and finish the tournament in April. Still can call if March madness.
