TSJ and RJ are killing us. They need to stop jacking up so many 3s and just drive to the lane. Oh well. Beat Minny on Tuesday and get back on track. We can still get a top 4 seed in the BTT and a double bye this year.

Couple turning points imo:

Mayer picking up a dumb foul and getting his 4th foul around 10 minute mark of 2nd half. If he's on the court during that time, we pull it out.

Terrance has to finish the missed layup up or pull it out and get a good shot.

Refs had bad calls on both sides but thought Murray committed obvious foul on offensive rebound that lead to Sanford three which really hurt.

Thought we played pretty well otherwise, but would've liked to see defensive strategy switched up on pick and roll with Perkins. Even though it sucks losing to Iowa, I think we can continue to improve, especially with Rodgers seemingly turning a corner and getting Goode back for 3p shooting. If RJ could provide anything offensively going forward, it would also be a huge boost.

He played hard and did make contributions on the defensive side, but it is really hard to overlook some of the bad. I think the problem is that his role on the offensive side of the ball is much larger than it has any right to be.
I'd argue he contriubted on the offensive side, 6 oboards and a lot of tips down there that ended up in 2nd chance points for other. He needs to make some of those bunnies and cut it down to maybe 2 TOs a game (he's bound to have some as much as he handles in press and end of shot clock) if hes' gonna be in this role. I'd rather BU get it in his hands less late in clock though

I would like someone to start a gofundme for a good portion of this board to not watch...or comment on what they think they see.

The amount of hate Coleman Hawkins gets on this board is ridiculous. He obviously didn't shoot well today, but he did a ton of other things. 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, an assist, interior defense. I find it funny I didn't see you all saying "Shannon lost us that game". Go check out his stats if you want to cherry pick stats to attack someone who didn't shoot great. Was Hawkins guarding Perkins all game? That guy is why we lost more than anything else. He went off. It happens. But all this focusing on one guy....while ignoring what he adds...is pathetic. We were up 8 during the game and what is being said on the board? Crap about Hawkins. It literally makes the game threads unfollowable.

Ty Rodgers mom was right about a lot of our fans.
Yeah, i don’t like the cohawk hate in general. I didn’t have a problem with his play today.

and wasnt this directly after the overutnred out of bounds when coleman got hacked? Murray shouldve fouled out on that one too

Hoping DD took notice of the curvy-shaped trajectory the ball took coming out of Perkins hands on any and all shots he took and how it could possibly help his free throw shooting.

The box score sure doesn't read like a bad ref job.

Illinois fouls: 22
Iowa fouls: 21

Illinois Free Throws Shot: 23
Iowa Free Throws Shot: 30
You're probably right but that doesn't tell the whole story. When were the fouls called? What was the score when they were called? Who were they called on? Were they fouls? Were they 50/50 judgement call fouls? How many 50/50 fouls were not called against Iowa? Iowa probably only benefited from 2 or 3 homer calls.. but that was enough.

This one doesn't bother me. On the road at Iowa is a crap shoot. We played them hard. and probably win more times than not. The Illini are not going to win the regular season bigten. It belongs to Purdue. It's all about seeding at this point. I want a double bye in BTT and 5 seed in NCAA. I think this can happen. Coleman can't go 0'fer and if RJ can't hit a shot, it's time to bench him. Hopefully Goode can pick up his minutes.
It’s Iowa. How can it not bother you? Wtf!

I'm not blaming the refs, but it did seem like we were called for a lot more ticky tacky fouls. And most of the fouls called on them were no doubters.

That being said, Matthew Mayer loves picking up stupid fouls. Especially in games where he is cooking. Seems like almost every game he is hot, he decides to also get in foul trouble.

And I know my bias isn't taking over, because I don't remember one time where Fran was pissed at the refs.

Definitely had their chances so not all on the refs but they definitely had an impact. The out of bounds on Hawkins call, 10 fouls in the 1st 9 minutes of the 2nd half, and not calling travel on Ullis in the corner with 11 seconds all were huge. Gotta play perfect to overcome that.
Lol the ball was clearly out of bounds off of Coleman albeit he was fouled but the call made was wrong. We also grabbed pulled and hacked out or way into most all.of those fouls.. It wasn't on the refs.. Sometimes you make a few mistakes don't guard the hit hand properly. Thus you lose the game.

I am proud of the players and effort they gave..Blame the staff for not stopping Perkins.

I'm just going to say it. We played freakin well tonight. We were the better team. We had the much better shot quality. Hand it to Iowa- they made high level shots and made the 527 free throws they were gifted. Play that game back 100 times with an actual competent reffing crew and we win 99 of them. This loss won't do anything to us. Im proud of how we came out in this one. Keep playing like this and we won't have many more losses this season.
Agree 100%

Well, I love Coleman's effort and Ty has shown huge strides. I will always hate Iowa and their fans, but I would love to have Connor McCaffrey on our team. I would also pay big dollars (if I had them) to be the one that sets down and reviews game tape with BIG officials. They are so bad it is impossible for it to be incompetence. I was a volunteer ref for my kids baseball games when they were younger... I was terrible. I know it isn't easy, BUT if you are being paid???? If can't do better, just don't do it.

They needed to play their best game (with a little help from the stripes) and won by 2 on their floor.

To those saying Coleman had a bad game. He made a first round pick work for everything, rebounded well and played great help defense.

Shannon is in his head a little bit. Think he needs to pull up and take a 10-12 footer a couple of times. He struggled finishing against Texas and I believe one of those got him going in OT.

Epps is a bucket. With his emergence, we now have 3 guys who can go get one unscripted. Not too many teams will have that come tourney time.

Looking forward to watching this team for the stretch run. If we keep progressing and get Goode to the point he can play about 20 minutes a game and shoot 35% from 3 I really like our chances to make a run.

Anyone else think Jaden got hit on that last 3? Go Illini!

1) The Illinois rule bit the Illini in butt today - that last 2 minute review needs to be revised. When there is a clear foul that impacts who ball goes off of, either give ball to team that would have been fouled, or call a foul. Clear momentum shift with game tied that went against us.
2) Great effort today, but we simply had too many dumb fouls on defensive end...Iowa lived at ft line (and made a large %, something we struggled with).
3)Every 50-50 play and call went the way of Iowa down stretch, but to be expected on road.
4) How did Iowa lose to Eastern!?
5) Need to take care of home court next week. This loss hurts, but it ultimately does not ruin the season at all.
6)When did UCONN join the B1G? I guess Maryland became UCONN
We shot 80% at the FT line - this was not the issue!

Losing to Iowa sucks. A loss is a loss, just as much as a win is a win. My Saturday is now about ruined.

I though the first half was some of the best basketball we played all season - we were focused, took good shots and defended without fouling. If we can continue to play like that consistently we can finish top 4 and go tot he second weekend in the tourney.

We should have won the game. Always say you have to play well enough to overcome bad calls - just a part of the game - but it just doesn't make it easier to accept.

F Iowa.

Now lets take it to Minny and Rutgers at home. We do that and we are tied for 2nd again.

This post was (wisely) deleted in the post game thread, but this is a great example of a lot of the people attacking Hawkins.

"What contributions outside of a block. His defense assignment was Perkins."

Not calling anyone out by name, but this poster made multiple posts attacking or criticizing Hawkins in the game thread but apparently didn't watch the game well enough to know this is a ridiculous statement. Perhaps some should spend more time watching and less time typing. It's like some are just poised by their keys waiting to complain about something. I guess that's just called the internet now?

Sorry. Sick of the negativity.
