... a lot of the people attacking Hawkins... Sorry. Sick of the negativity.

Hawkins has not played at a consistent level all Season. But there is one thing about his game that nobody can criticize. This guy CARES. He plays his hind-quarters off when on the floor. Sometimes he cares a bit too much... like when he misses a free throw or does something else on the court and he gets that frustrated look.
Missing a shot or messing up now and then is just part of the game. You can't get down on yourself and you shouldn't outwardly show frustration because that feeds your Opposition when they know they are getting into your head like that. And it sends a negative message to your teammates.

Hawkins needs to relax and let his natural talent flow. He needs to dial back his getting frustrated. The same can be said for Melendrez. Both of these guys are talented but they are letting their own negativity at times sabotage their games. Melendrez looked afraid today to even look for a Three chance.

The Illini are going to need both of these guys at their best to do anything special this coming March. The Illini are not going very deep into the bench so all the guys who see floor time have to raise the level of their play.

Bottom Line: You want guys on the floor who CARE. The Illini have that. The rest of things can then be worked out.

Well I hope my comments about CoHawk aren't being taken out of context with some of the others. I have been very obviously one of his biggest fans here from the beginning. Quite the tab running in the bar car on the CoHawk Train.

If you watched him closely today, you noticed his mental vs. physical effort. I'm not questioning his effort, heart, or his talent. I'm suggesting that he can be SO much better in games like this if he would just play loose and free and not let his head distract him. I think he is overthinking his game and trying too hard to force plays when he should create more for himself a lot of those times.

I don't think that's harsh or vitriolic, just some fair criticism of his play today.

This is totally fair...

Hawkins was wide open what is he supposed to do? You don’t get a better look. Pass it off for a possible worse shot. What kills us is Shannon not finishing the layup. Also that whole sequence before the 1/2 ended where we were up 6 and it went to 1. Plus our turnovers hurt today.
Make the shot.

Coleman has had several decent to good games against "quad 1 opponents"

9 and 7 against texas
16, 7 and 4 against MD
9 and 8 against MSU
20 and 5 and 9 and 5 against wisky
11 and 9 agianst OSU

His game just doesnt match what many expect a big time player to be. he's not a scorer, he's an energy guy that can average about 10

Also i continue to say hes performing above his rating. Dude wasnt a top 150 recruit.

I like how the hate seeps from your post......"9 rebounds at 6'10", crucial TOs as if most arent crucial and two other guys didnt have similar TO problems. Point is he gets ragged on by some to the point where even the positives are discounted

But i think the crux of the poster's beef was saying hawkins' assigment was perkins, which is quite ridiculous lol
OSU not a Tourament team
Wisky not a Tourament team
MD we were being beat down that whole game.

I’ll give you MSU and Texas

I didn’t say he isn’t an energy player but a player who has the ability to have a triple double should play smarter. The game he got his triple double he told a player prior to the game he was going to get that Triple double. Why not have that same mental approach in everygame?

My issue with CH is his mental game. If you just watch the timing of his mistakes. If he starts off well then he normally finishes well but if not, it’s bad. I think CH needs another year in college to develop his overall game.

If CH wasn’t expected to be a leader then I wouldn’t say anything however most of us expected a lot from him this year in year 3. Just because he is playing above his “recruiting ranking” are we suppose to be impressed. Well in that case, Ja Morant says hi. Because that is what it looks like to play above your highschool recruiting ranking.

RJ has been tough to watch this year. The problem is he gave us glimpses of what he could be last year and I think it resulted in expectations that are seemingly lofty and unrealistic for year two. As frustrating as it is because we obviously want more, I feel for the kid because the moments of confidence in his face is rare. I hope he keeps shooting and gets his swagger back that we have seen. I think he is capable, but right now I think it is more so just fighting the demons in his head.

My hope is that we keep our young players around to continue to develop and contribute (not at all saying there are rumors, or any that I know of at least).

Fun game to watch. Frustrating moments at times but we are still learning and getting better. Onto the next.

Oh, and I’m excited about getting Goode going soon!

There’s plenty of that to go around with this team, unfortunately. In terms of mental mistakes I’d say Shannon had the worst of it today (and lately, if we’re being honest about it). You never know why that stuff happens but it’s happening a lot to this team. The bad vibes just haven’t seemed to go away.

The 3 Iowa hit at the half because of our awful clock management cost us this game

I knew that would happen
I agree it was bad clock management to close 1st half...but come on now. We lost the game because we did not execute effectively enough down the stretch and let Iowa get to the line too early in 2nd half. We had an 8 point lead 4 minutes into 2nd half. Silly fouls killed us more than anything else.

You said quad 1, so i provided quad one defined teams (wisky i may give you but they are quad 1 depdnding on venue so since its the same team at home, included)

And your ja morant comp is ridiculous. Yes he outplayed his ranking WAY more than coleman (or really anyone ever lol), that doesnt mean coleman didnt. Theres levels to everything. THats like saying who cares if coleman had a triple double, luka docic had a 50 point triple double.

As for the triple double comment, you only know that because of the journey episode. You dont know what he's saying or thinking before every game. BTW, ppl LOUDLY criticized him during that game too (didnt shoot enough in the zone, etc) which goes back to some of our points on over the top criticism he gets at times.

Right. Because the only example of playing above your rank is Ja freakin Morant. Anything other than being the #2 pick in the draft and an MVP level talent is just pure garbage.

The great takes continue...

Tough loss but i think we’re going to be a tough out on a neutral court in March. Really like what I’m seeing.
Well... plenty of people say that B10 teams do poorly in March because they depend on calls and free throws late in games. That's not Illinois this year!!

I knew better than to come in here after this game but just couldn't resist. Sorry but you all love to !!!!! way to much about the players and staff.. You're never satisfied, no one does anything right except you because your comments are always so spot on. Time to move on I simply can't take the constant know it all vitrol. Not one of you has stepped o. The floor and played ball at this level so you have no clue about what you are spewing.

We are an offensive RJ away from being scary good. I hope a large swath of our fans realize what we have in CoHawk before it is too late.
Before this season started, I expected RJ to be the offensive leader of this team, have the ball in his hands, seeking shots where he could depend on his shooting skill or athletic advantages, and being the Alpha Dog. I was wrong. He has shown aspects of that person, but his shooting skills...and confidence in those skills....have sunk to near nothingness.

That said, there are three things I see that have hurt this team's ability to win big games.
1. RJ's offensive contribution is about 15% of his potential and those points are left off the scoreboard. Give the team and RJ 10 pts. more in every contest and then see the effect.
2. CoHawk has been simply negligent in his responsibility to score...even if he only took advantage of open, uncontested shots within 10 ft. Add on another 6 pts. per game.
3. TSJ's inability to handle the ball in the paint and on drives. Gotta take it with you when you go. To his credit, his foul shooting and finishes when he goes successfully have been key....though not enough. He also needs to learn to score more slowly in the paint where he is very good. Add another 4 pts. per game.

Now take those pts.....subtract 10 for pts. scored by teammates when those guys don't. and you pick up another 10 pts. per game....even reduce it to 6 for my exaggeration....and you get some different outcomes. Reduce turnovers by 5 per game, make 10% more from the FT line, and play defense without reach in fouls and you have a team that can play with anyone...EVERY NIGHT!!!

This is not a statistical analysis based on fact, but it is based on fundamentally sound play of which this team is capable. Reach for the stars....and someday you just may grab one.

What annoyed me is a few just stupid back court fouls when they were in the double bonus, Can’t afford to could do much in close games, especially in the backcourt.

#169
it’s not that bad of a loss but this is a game you should win to excuse the PSU and maybe the northwestern game.

#170
You're probably right but that doesn't tell the whole story. When were the fouls called? What was the score when they were called? Who were they called on? Were they fouls? Were they 50/50 judgement call fouls? How many 50/50 fouls were not called against Iowa? Iowa probably only benefited from 2 or 3 homer calls.. but that was enough.
it is more the fouls that weren't called Iowa that I have an issue with, but it is what happens when the crowd is into the game and your officials are incompetent.

#172
Hawkins takes a few shots all game and then takes a corner three in a crucial situation 🤷🏻‍♂️. Granted he was wide open, but you are so out of rhythm with shooting by that point.
Agreed, not the optimal shot
Hawkins plyeed with massive intensity
Epps and Rogers played with poise
Free throw jugernaut. Threee peoplee with season FT averages of 90%. Is that what thee announcers said?
I had a feeling Murray's threee at end of first half might come back to haunt us.

I know I'm gonna catch some crap for this, but every close game that's lost by any team anywhere can point to a couple of foul calls as the reason. And they'd be right. If we won this game, Iowa could do the same thing. I get weary of that being the 'only' reason we lose. We played really well today, and Iowa played just a touch better, at home, with a career day from one of their players, and insane FT%.

I've never liked the foundation of your argument. In addition to never playing ball at this level, I've also never piloted a 747. But when one crashes, do I have to be a pilot to know something went wrong? I've never been a chef, but I can tell you when the food is no good. Your argument really makes no sense. When we see a much more talented Illini team lose to inferior teams, we should be able to comment on that without being accused of "vitriol." If the players and staff continue to let guys go off for 30+ points and think that's a winning formula, then Loyola 2.0 here we come.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned. It probably has, but our guys being in foul trouble changed the game and have Iowa the advantage.
Too many stupid fouls. Mayer had 2 TSJ had 1 Ty got out of position on a couple of his fouls

Mayer sitting in the first half when he was hot hurt the offense
