Does it matter how I know? It still makes my point. The mental aspect of his game. His body language is everything .

My Ja comment was only to point out that playing above your high school rating shouldn’t be an accomplishment when you have a multiple D 1 offers. Which Ja did not have. But I agree it is a crazy comparison and not the same.

CH takes multiple plays off mentally during games. That needs to be fixed. If he fixes that I will be the loudest one rooting for him. In fact, I have said multiple times on this board I want Coleman to shoot the ball more when he is in the paint.

If you disagree that CH makes mental mistakes at the wrong time of the games constantly then, we will just have to agree to disagree because we aren’t watching the same game.

We can revisit this topic during the second round of the NCAA. If CH plays up to his potential ( which is what the NBA is evaluating) then we are a final four team. With out CH playing up to his potential we will exit in the 2nd round again for the 3 rd straight year. I won’t have to say a word on this board after that because everyone else will.
You missed my point...which was you dont actually know if he goes into each game with a certain mindset, you just know about that one game and assumed the rest based on his play. But you can have the right mindset and things go wrong.

no disagreement htat he has some mental mistakes, mine and others overall points is that he gets a disproportionate amount of flack. He's not the only guy who makes ill timed errors, but reading some of these threads (this one actually is tame), you might think he was. And like htat previous post, ppl go out of their way to attribute things that arent even his fault as his fault (referrign to whoever said hawkins was on perkins as an example)

Cheers, done with the topic

Coleman has had several decent to good games against "quad 1 opponents"

9 and 7 against texas
16, 7 and 4 against MD
9 and 8 against MSU
20 and 5 and 9 and 5 against wisky
11 and 9 agianst OSU

His game just doesnt match what many expect a big time player to be. he's not a scorer, he's an energy guy that can average about 10

Also i continue to say hes performing above his rating. Dude wasnt a top 150 recruit.

I like how the hate seeps from your post......"9 rebounds at 6'10", crucial TOs as if most arent crucial and two other guys didnt have similar TO problems. Point is he gets ragged on by some to the point where even the positives are discounted

But i think the crux of the poster's beef was saying hawkins' assigment was perkins, which is quite ridiculous lol
James Augustine was one of our best rebounders in many years and averaged 9.1 his best year. Nothing wrong with 9 rebounds...

I already addressed this as far as who we were playing. But out of the 14 TO today Shannon (4) CH (3) and Ty (4) accounted for 10 of them.

Crucial is the timing of the TO.
Ty and Harris turnovers are somewhat acceptable being freshmen. You have to look at each turnover individually. TSJ had 1 trying for an alley hoop that might have been tipped

I've never liked the foundation of your argument. In addition to never playing ball at this level, I've also never piloted a 747. But when one crashes, do I have to be a pilot to know something went wrong? I've never been a chef, but I can tell you when the food is no good. Your argument really makes no sense. When we see a much more talented Illini team lose to inferior teams, we should be able to comment on that without being accused of "vitriol." If the players and staff continue to let guys go off for 30+ points and think that's a winning formula, then Loyola 2.0 here we come.
I thought the defense played very well for the most part. Perkins, and to a lesser extent, Murray hit many contested shots. Perkins was feeling it, and we probably could have changed the defense slightly, but that was not the issue. I think we had a few too many silly fouls in the 2nd half, which gave Iowa way too many looks at the charity stripe. There were at least two offensive possessions where we turned the ball over and had a silly reach foul afterward, when Iowa was already in the bonus or double bonus. Those free points at the stripe were extremely costly. Those self-inflicted wounds are more important to clean up, IMO, than worrying about a player getting hot and scoring 30+ points.

Winning on the road in the B1G is not easy. Disappointed in the loss but not discouraged. Just a highly entertaining game to watch, and I expect if we meet them in the BTT we will win.

The players need the criticism. They don't need hostility though. All these guys I imagine want to play at the next level, and they need to hear what people are seeing. Coleman plays his tail off, he has since coming here, but his body and his mind have never been on the same page. Far too often he seems unprepared for the situations he's in. He is totally out of control, and if he can find some harmony between is physical abilities and his work in progress basketball instincts, he will make a career at the next level. People need to stop being so sensitive over the slightest bit of criticism. Its doing the players a favor as long as it doesn't cross a line.

And if you don't think players know whats being said, then stop getting offended for them.

Not everybody can transition so seamlessly like Jayden Epps, which is wonderful to see considering he will have the keys for years to come.

MAKE. FREE. THROWS.
Outside of Coleman missing a pair of free throws (those hurt) and Dainja missing a free throw in last few minutes, we were very solid at the line. 18-23 (nearly 80%) at the foul line (18-22 if you don't include the intentional miss). Can't really complain about our free throw shooting today. The bigger issue was that we fouled Iowa way too much, resulting in 26 free throws made (26/30...nearly 90%)! The 8 extra free throws Iowa made was the real difference in the final score.

Well I hope my comments about CoHawk aren't being taken out of context with some of the others. I have been very obviously one of his biggest fans here from the beginning. Quite the tab running in the bar car on the CoHawk Train.

If you watched him closely today, you noticed his mental vs. physical effort. I'm not questioning his effort, heart, or his talent. I'm suggesting that he can be SO much better in games like this if he would just play loose and free and not let his head distract him. I think he is overthinking his game and trying too hard to force plays when he should create more for himself a lot of those times.

I don't think that's harsh or vitriolic, just some fair criticism of his play today.
I question it his consistent effort and focus at times. One huge play today were he got lazy and didn’t block out Perkins who ran right around him to get a rebound and draw a lazy foul on Hawkins due to his lack of focus and effort.
He has this happen too often with passes and lapses when opponents out hustle him. He has improved but still needs to do better in these close games

My take:

Iowa had to shoot lights out, basically make every free throw, be very fortunate to get home cookin' down the stretch, and they only beat us by 2 points. We are a tough out for anyone. We will beat them if we get them in the Big 10 tourney.

Jaylen Epps is, and will be, an absolute stud and a leader going forward.

Come on officials, at least do better in the final 2 or 3 minutes of a game. Some of these calls or no-calls simply cannot be missed.

Anyone who says that is crazy. At worst, this is a 6 seed right now. Win our next three games and we will be right on the four line going into Indiana, which would obviously be the biggest win of the year
Agreed. Some on here need to step away from the ledge.

Aa frustrating as Hawkins can be to watch, he still does really valuable things that can’t be taken for granted. His defense almost always great, and today he was a beast on the offensive glass. Hopefully he can get more consistent in offensive decision making come March, but he’s a big part of why our team defense is usually really good. Just taking the bad with the good in his case.

The box score sure doesn't read like a bad ref job.

Illinois fouls: 22
Iowa fouls: 21

Illinois Free Throws Shot: 23
Iowa Free Throws Shot: 30
Fouls by half

First half
Illinois 6
Iowa 8

Second half
Illinois 16
Iowa 13

Don't really think we fouled twice as much in the second half as we did in the first.

Even if you think the calls were legitimate, why the increase in fouls called? First half, 14 combined fouls compared to 29 in the second half.
