How can one even be sure these days if the senders really are Illini fans, and not fans of another team posing as Illini fans? That said, whoever it is should NOT be direct messaging college kids under any circumstance.
Yeah, there is always the possibility (and probably a good one) that it’s trolls from another fan base. How can one even be sure these days if the senders really are Illini fans, and not fans of another team posing as Illini fans? That said, whoever it is should NOT be direct messaging college kids under any circumstance.
I missed it, what did she say?I would like someone to start a gofundme for a good portion of this board to not watch...or comment on what they think they see.
The amount of hate Coleman Hawkins gets on this board is ridiculous. He obviously didn't shoot well today, but he did a ton of other things. 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, an assist, interior defense. I find it funny I didn't see you all saying "Shannon lost us that game". Go check out his stats if you want to cherry pick stats to attack someone who didn't shoot great. Was Hawkins guarding Perkins all game? That guy is why we lost more than anything else. He went off. It happens. But all this focusing on one guy....while ignoring what he adds...is pathetic. We were up 8 during the game and what is being said on the board? Crap about Hawkins. It literally makes the game threads unfollowable.
Ty Rodgers mom was right about a lot of our fans.
.There are adults that do this, have no doubt. I've encountered more than a few IRL.
Yeah, I think the original poster is a bit naive if he thinks it is just 18-22 year olds doing this stuff. I actually think the majority of these online incidents are people over 22. At the very least the number of 35+ year olds pulling stuff like that is very likely alarmingly high. And someone asked how do we know it’s not trolls from other schools. Again, I’m sure some are but it would be naive and/or sanctimonious to think there are not Illini “fans” pulling this sick cr@p too..
There were more than a couple at the game that I had to listen to IRL. Let that sink in.
Why the !!!! would you bother to even attend the game? Why wear the colors if you're gonna be more verbally abusive than the worst Iowa fan in the stands around you?
If my stepson wasn't there, it would have escalated pretty quickly. I'm !!!!ing tired of it.
They are good kids trying to be better adults, I would hope we can set better examples than beating up on someone for a bad pass.
I hope Goode can play sometime but he only average about 3 pts last year. RJ averaged more. Goode hasn't played since November. It is going to be hard to get him meaningful minutes and who knows how he will performed. He has played very little with the guys on this team so they re not that familiar with him in game play. Maybe a redshirt year would be better for him and the team.Agree for the most part. I was hoping just an appearance to kick start the team, give a mental boost. And maybe give a rest for a minute or two for the fouled impaired.
I can't imagine anyone acting that way towards college kids. They would only do that once to one of my boys, I might get my butt kicked but they would think long and hard about acting that way again.100% agreed. There is a huge difference between discussing player performance and being vile towards someone who you do not even know. Technology has made it far too easy to spew whatever you want at someone with no consequences via being able to "hide" behind a screen. Why can't people just be happy to watch these players play the game they love? At the end of the day it's just that - a game. There is really no place for this kind of behavior at all, let alone being aimed at kids who's every action on the court gets judged. If the people doing this have kids of their own, they need to take a look in the mirror - and as Ked said - think about what they would think if someone was talking to their children that way.
if he does play, I hope we keep our expectations in line with the facts you just cited. He has been out for a long time. I am sure the staff will do what’s best for him in the long run.I hope Goode can play sometime but he only average about 3 pts last year. RJ averaged more. Goode hasn't played since November. Iowa is a pretty good team - Murray and Perkins are both studs. We did a great job with Murray but Perkins absolutely lit us up. It pains me to say it, but Fran is a very good coach - he has a good track record of taking diamonds in the rough like Murray and Perkins and turning them into NBA caliber players. He also does a good job of roster construction. They are Iowa so I still hate them, but you have to respect the job he does.Iowa basketball: we only win at home. And only when the refs let us shoot 30fts. And only when we aren’t playing Eastern Illinois.
I will take our team!

this is why I think social media does more harm than good. people saying dumb things and having to apologize later and just spewing negativity and hatred without consequences. it is very damaging to those on the receiving end. no wonder depression, anxiety and other mental health issues are increasing worldwide.Anytime I hear about fan hate/vitriol, I think back a couple years ago to the incident with Kofi speaking out about some racist comments on social media and it ended up being some Iowa fan. Also, that happened a mere few days after a similar incident happened with E.J. Liddell after losing to Oral Roberts. It has become a common issue with college athletes now. For all of the great things humans can accomplish now because of the internet, it has also given voice to any and every moron that wants to tweet something. It's sad.
I agree that the last minute sequence to end the first half was not good at all, but it far from "sunk us". We pushed the lead to 8 points at the first tv timeout in the second half, which more than made up for the end of first half blunder. What really hurt was some silly fouling that we had after that tv timeout. Iowa got into the bonus super early, and the 8 point lead nearly evaporated. Perkins made 6 free throws in a two minute span. We pushed the lead back up to seven with a little less than 10 minutes to play...Iowa proceeds to make 4 consecutive free throws to cut into that lead. That is not a recipe for winning on the road.Been rewatching the condensed game. 2 clear bumps on Mayer in the first half, including one on a made 3, neither called. But I guess that was when the refs decided to let them play vs tightening it up in the second half. And Rebraca moved almost every screen. BIG refs continue to be trash.
That said, the sequence that sunk us was the last minute of the first half. Up 7 and on the break to push it to 9. We flub it, Iowa comes down and Rebraca gets fouled and Coleman’s block is called a goaltend (think that was a good call), then we have an opportunity to take the last shot up 4, but jack a quick 3 giving Murray the chance to hit a 3 at the buzzer. Had a chance to take control of the game right there and go into half up 6 or more, but self inflicted wounds let them get back to 1.
I know we will have a condensed schedule but this extra practice time may help us clean up a couple of these little things for March.
disagree - that sequence at the end of 1H killed us. We should have been up 8 at the half, which would have translated to a double digit lead in the second halfI agree that the last minute sequence to end the first half was not good at all, but it far from "sunk us". If we are going to truly look at one sequence that "killed us", it would have been the no call when the ball went off of Coleman with less than 2 minutes to play. We should have had free throws. Instead, Iowa takes the ball, shoots an air ball that leads to offensive rebound and kick out for go ahead 3. We never were able to recover after that sequence. That sequence, by definition, killed us more than a sloppy sequence in the first half (which we were mostly able to overcome early in the second half).disagree - that sequence at the end of 1H killed us. Well in a close game you can look at a lot.If we are going to truly look at one sequence that "killed us", it would have been the no call when the ball went off of Coleman with less than 2 minutes to play. Yes, we should have been up 4-8 points to end first half, but there is no guarantee that we would "push it to double digits in second half". What really hurt us were some sloppy turnovers and silly fouls in the second half. I refuse to go along with the thought process that we were sunk by a sequence in the first half. That is like claiming you missed the postseason because of a blown game in December, even though you controlled your own destiny in the last week of the season.
I kind of agree that there's usually no point in identifying THE play that lost us the game. In a game decided by 2 points, there are lots of plays that could have tilted the outcome in our favor. If we are going to truly look at one sequence that "killed us", it would have been the no call when the ball went off of Coleman with less than 2 minutes to play. 100% agree. We can fix clock management, silly turnovers, silly reach in fouls, etc. In fact, we must do this if we want to play deep in the tournament.Well in a close game you can look at a lot.
But a good place to start are the points where you control things.
We can't fix refs. We can fix clock management.
