Maybe he did not like being yelled at like a dog. I am not sure that I like BU's brand of "toughness." Nor would I encourage anyone to be coached like that.

Lol. Shall I compile a list of successful coaches who coach just as hard as Brad does? All you guys ever see is one side of it. There’s love in there too. The locker room celebration videos aren’t fake or staged. Ayo, Trent, Monte, Kofi, Plummer, Goode just to make a few would do anything for BU as well as he’d do anything for them.

This is what is wrong with sooooooo much!!!!! We're toooooooo soft!!!!! You haven't been yelled at before? You don't think competition at a high level comes with emotion? When there is a common goal of being successful as the highest level it's going to come with criticism, anger, emotion, yelling, etc. I totally get that some people don't respond to someone getting after them (then go play somewhere else), but my my my we need thicker tougher skin.

I'm guessing that he's had pro Euro offers all along, but that he wanted to give the US college game a shot. Exposure for the NBA being the biggest element.

Between the two "insider" takes of promised playing time or expecting to start (closely related of course) and the Piper take of getting a foreign offer, I'd guess more of the latter but the former also being an element.

You come to a new country. You have to use a new language every day. You find out the competition is better than you figured. Classes are hard not to mention they're classes.

It wouldn't take much to convince a kid that the grass in Europe is greener. For him, it actually is.

When Perrin committed, wasn't the original plan for him to start the season with the Illini, only to have some issues with academic credits de-rail that plan? If he were able to play in October/November, he probably would have had a much better chance to carve out a consistent role. Trying to mesh with new guys in the heart of the B1G season wouldn't be ideal for anyone, particularly a guy from another country who speaks another language.

Too bad it didn't work out. He appeared to have a lot of tools.

I won't dissect Brad Underwood's coaching style or philosophy in this thread. Every student-athlete will react in their own way to a system. I'm assuming recruits talk to other players (including those who transferred out) and get a pretty good read on what they're walking into. I do tire of the constant re-arranging of the roster and staff. We're on year six with Coach U, and we've replaced the top three coaches (with three very excellent coaches).

Also, Coach Underwood has yet to graduate a single one of HIS recruits (except for his son, I guess, although he transferred in as well). They have all turned pro (Black, Ayo, Kofi, kind of Hutch I think) transferred, or are still on the roster. I loved that Trent and Da'Monte showed a ton of passion and stayed on for so long, but I really don't like the idea of a new starting five year in and year out if we're not making it past the first weekend.

(And before you say every school does this)

Illinois has now had 22 players transfer or turn pro in BU's tenure:
Te'Jon Lucas/Leron Black/Michael Finke/Mark Smith/Greg Eboigod/Matic Vesel/Samba Kane/Georgi Bezshonisvili/Ayo Dosunmu/Tevian Jones/Alan Griffin/Jermaine Hamlin/Kofi Cockburn/Austin Hutcherson/Ben Verdonk/Jacob Grandison/Adam Miller/Andre Curbelo/Omar Payne/Brandon Podzinski/Zach Perrine/Skyy Clark

Purdue has had 3 during this time including a top 5 pick:
Emmanuel Duwuona/Isiah Thompson/Jaden Ivey

Kansas has had 8 plus one player die (six transfers)
Quentin Grimes/Devin Dotson/Garrit Luinsta/Tristin Enaruna/Christian Braun/Isaac McBride/Bryce Thompson/Tyon Foster/

I'm too lazy to look at the rest of the NCAA (I'm sure someone could find a website dedicated to this sort of thing) but there are two teams with a lot of success without losing a lot of players year in and year out.

I enjoy Illini basketball, but I would much rather have consistency in the roster and be building a team rather than working piecemeal year in and year out.

I think your comparisons would have more credibility if you compared BU’s program to a similar one and not a blue blood/or consistent winner with a deeply entrenched coach.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but in turning a program around and getting it to a one seed and hanging two banners (three really), you have to assume he had to sift through a lot of chaff to find the wheat.

I’d guess (just a hypothesis) that a similar program that went from decade-long-doormat to top level program would also have more turnover in those first few years. It’s just a guess though.

You’re using two established coaches for your comparison. It’s really not fair to compare the first couple of years of BU tenure, where we needed to plug in lesser talent to fill the roster.

I agree, we had a large turnover, from last year until yesterday, but a large number of players you’re naming didn’t belong on a power five conference team. How about listing players that transferred to equal strength teams, and the list shrinks to normal levels.

Even a few that did didn’t develop anywhere close to what we expected and aren’t receiving the minutes they expected when they left.

Lol you clearly didn’t even do research on Purdue because Eric Hunter transferred to Butler this past offseason and Matt Haarms went to BYU. Those are 2 guys just off the top of my head so I’d guess there are plenty more.

Losing two guys during the season not a great look for the program.
In a vacuum, perhaps you're correct, but when you look at both situations and the backstories and motivations it isn't really that big of a deal. Not to bash on Skyy, but we've been a different team since he left. Perrin played a whopping 2 minutes and just didn't pass the "B1G Big Man" eye test for me (although that's hardly a valid criteria).

Very strange that you picked two teams that have had a lot of program stability for over a decade as a comparison. It should be expected that there are a number of players transferring out after a coach gets fired and new coach hired.

In any event, I am not sure how you compiled your list, but Purdue has definitely had more than 3 during this same window (maybe you are just using simple memory). A simple Google search shows a number of names that you left off (not including those deciding not to pursue college basketball for extra year due to COVID), but to name a few:

- Matt Haarms transferred to BYU
-Noel Eastern transferred to Howard
-Eric Hunter Jr transferred to Butler

I am sure there are more, but I see no need to look them up. I am sure Kansas also has more than 8 as well.

I will take some roster turnover if it means hanging banners in SFC. This is the new norm now with NIL...get used to it.
