The recruiting thread seems to be buried. Can we get an updated scholarship grid that reflects the most recent exiles and DDs remaining eligibility. I’ve lost track of how many schollies we have open.

It's no wonder that he left.

Last summer he played semi-pro basketball at Antibes on the Cote d'azur on the gold coast of France. Then he heads to the plains of Kansas (!) for a temporary fall stay and on to U of Ill for WINTER and Coach Underwood yelling, chewing out guys at practice, and hard study in school. All in a foreign language!
I can imagine that if anyone from France contacted him to come back and play basketball he'd be gone in a flash.

Here's the worrisome part. Who is counseling these young "sensitive" guys Like Skyy and Zak when they run into rough patches? I'm surprised that they just "up and left" almost before anyone knew. The pressure and tension they feel must be bled off before it arrives at a separation.

I know college life is HARD with studies and basketball, and Coach is not an easy guy to play for. And then to practice hard and then sit on the bench all game, we might ALL begin to wonder if its worth it and be tempted to bail.

In the big picture, when you bring in 7-8 new guys its hard for them all to meld together. Skyy may have been driven off by the team, but Zak slunk off to fairer shores.

I don't think it's so far fetched to think that ZP was sold on how much he would play. If I remember right when he was recruited we didn't know what we had in Dain and Ty.

Has there ever been a player who actually put on an Illini uniform who has played fewer career minutes? Even hutch played more for us

anyone concerned with the midseason transfers? what does it say about the program? Maybe nothing.... What does it say about the recruits? Don't follow other programs all that closely but is this happening elsewhere?

You make way too much sense.

Not concerned at all. Two distinct situations — a player’s camp who has no qualms about pulling a kid out when his playing time is reduced and a foreign player who hadn’t really had time to connect to program/players because of circumstances out of BU’s control and now it seems got a professional offer. Heck one of the reasons BU likes to keep a schollie open is because of mid-year transfers, so it happens at other schools.

I have made posts advocating for a dedicated full-time Sports Counselor that is available 24/7 to all members of a sports program. With the pressures of school and sports and society in general this is an absolute necessity today.

I don’t know if other programs already have this. But the programs that do are going to prosper as they will be offering a critical service to young people who cannot be expected to always handle everything that comes at them today.

Regular counselors do not usually understand the unique pressures that are on athletes. And athletes might still fear the macho culture that they should not seek help when they need it. Some courageous athletes have been coming out publicly on the challenges they face. But I’m sure they are still a minority.

But seeing a dedicated Sports Counselor would make such a trip easier with the knowledge that they would be talking with someone who really ‘gets them’.

You can't always go to a coach or trusted friend or family member. And that is really beyond what's called for in these situations.

Just because he expected it doesn’t mean he was promised it. And as someone points out, didn’t really cost Illini anything to take him at mid-year if he was adamant about it. You hope being in the program and going through the process is beneficial for both parties and he enjoys/sees the benefit of it. If he does, all signs pointed to him being a productive player down the line. If he doesn’t (which obviously he didn’t), then scholarship is back open.

Sorry to see the kid leave as he certainly had talent. But didn’t work out, so I wish him the best and now wait patiently for BU and staff to find the next contributor to fill that scholarship.
I certainly agree with you in theoretical recruiting processes. I'm just trying to understand the expectation to start midseason that Indy stated along with the "promises not being met" that 0440 stated. Just that from a staff resource perspective, spending time and resources on recruiting a player who has way way way different "take it or leave it" expectations than what the coaching staff knows they can even remotely offer, seems like a bit of an odd choice. And even if this was an either I come in midseason and get starting minutes or I walk type of ultimatum, it seems rather fruitless and possibly disruptive to bring that player onboard knowing full well you won't meet the playing time terms of his ultimatum. It'd be far more logical to me that he had an alternate pro offer, or he was concerned about Dain and Ty's progression along with Amani coming in next year and that he wouldn't be a starter in 2024.

So that's why I see this one as a bit of a headscratcher as I can't really see Brad and his recruiting staff bringing him to campus and not playing him if they didn't think they had a realistic chance of retaining him for next year and preparing him for college play. And similarly, seems odd Perrin would come to campus if he knew he wasn't going to play if playing time is what he came to campus for. That's why I think there almost had to be a major miscommunication here as the staff and Perrin seem to be on completely different wavelengths. I can't say I've ever heard of an early enrollee leaving a program that same semester because he wasn't immediately made a starter or given significant minutes. Just seems like this would've been ironed out before Perrin came to campus, unless his expectations magically changed within 4 weeks time, right?

All in all, what a very very very strange year it has been. I half expect Matt Mayer to reveal he's actually Ashton Kutcher in a mask and we all got punk'd at some point this year

Matic, probably. Good for Perrin, he wouldn't have likely played enough significant minutes here for his satisfaction, but now he'll be making a few Euros back home without having to do any homework. BTW, what's Hutch doing nowadays?

Vesel appeared in 16 games for a total of 70 minutes. That's a big jump from Perrin's 1 game and 2 minutes, but it is still probably near the bottom. rdstone99 suggested Anthony Higgs, who redshirted his Frosh year and then left, so we get to quibble about whether he "put on the uniform".

Podz had 16 games and 69 minutes last year, so just a little behind Vesel.
