A 3 point loss to a highly motivated conference opponent doesn’t really bother me.

What bothers me is the fact we really have no answer for a team with good guards and a focused game. We still play too dumb for too many minutes.

Sure we are 20-12 and going to the dance

But on the Bright side - we've only lost to 9 teams this year.

Wow, I have to keep watching because I'm starting to enjoy the pain.

Please oh please, get to the 2nd weekend to make the pain worth it.
I sincerely don't know what would make this trainwreck of a season worth it for me anymore. Maybe a Final Four? I came in wanting a Sweet Sixteen, but two wins is not enough to make up for the frustration anymore.

2-11 vs quad 1s, and have needed some absolute late miracle comebacks in a couple other games (NW, MI). We’re better than the absolute bottom of the Big 10. That’s all you can say right now.

Were those results worth it to bring in a couple 1 year guys and forfeit building a team the traditional way? Portal ball I don’t think is going to be a long term winner.

I was actually thinking this is the least fun I've ever had following a sports team.
That’s fine. I just look at is a year where we lost

A two time all American center and probably the most dominant player we’ve ever had.

A fan favorite guard that many, not me, but many liked as much as dee brown.

One of the best shooters I’ve ever seen

The son of a legend here, that won a crap ton of games

And 85 percent of our scoring.

For 90 percent of college basketball fan bases that means you have a terrible season.

We really didn’t have as good as year as we thought we might, but we don’t have much shooting and we don’t have a true point guard on the roster.

Brad squeezed out a lot out of this roster and I enjoyed it.

The years I didn’t enjoy were when we were playing the first day, we’re missing on every recruit, and it felt like maybe we’d never get back to Illinois basketball.

I’d bet anything we draw Missouri in the tournament, one and done.
You’d lose everything then
They avoid first round matchups with non conference teams that have played each other

The one good thing about this game for me is that there are bigger things than Illini hoops. As much as I love our Illini. I am very thankful that Jaden Epps is ok and I do think we miss him more than we may realize. He is second in the team in Plus Minus when he is on the floor. I’m glad he is ok.
Absolutely, most important thing that happened today for us was seeing Epps able to play a little.

Like I said, made this account this year after the Northwestern loss on the road I believe. Held out and started trying to talk all optimism. Saw so many great flashes but this team is what it is and my glasses are no longer foggy.

Don’t play with a purpose
Don’t run anything on offense
Lazy on defense 75% of the time
Freshman play tough but can’t beat B1G teams on their own
Veterans don’t care at all
Can’t shoot for s***

They just have 0 purpose, they don’t care about this loss. It’s all talk. I’m sick of it. Won’t be watching our tournament game and will lose by 15+ first round. Done with this disaster.
Relax. You'll watch our tournament game. Take a breath and enjoy the rest of the conference tournaments. Still a fun time of year.

Tell me you don't know what a "trainwreck" is without telling me you don't know what a "trainwreck" is.
This team was picked second in The Athletic's preseason Big Ten poll. They scratched and clawed to finish seventh and got embarrassed by Penn State three times. That's a trainwreck

In close games every possession matters. PSU really doesn’t take many if any dumb shots. Our squad had a chance to win or expand the lead several times and just took some awful shots. Make our FTs and stop doing that and maybe we could win some of these games. PSU just plays much smarter than our guys do but PSU is not the most talented team. Quite frankly when that happens you gotta give some of the credit to the coaches.

Dain's technical changed the game (not blaming him- freak celebration technical).

Illini were leading 46-40. Then came the 'T'. Penn State went on to secure a lead of 69-59. Outscored the Illini 29 to 13. After the Illini had finally grabbed some momentum to get that 6-point lead after playing catch-up most of the way to that point. The table had been set for the Illini to take control. In front of a mostly Orange crowd. But Penn State met just shook all that off and grabbed hold of the game by the throat.

Penn State had an Alpha (or two or three) on the floor to seize control when the game started to slip away. And once again... the Illini showed a lack in that area of the game to respond in kind.

I'm guessing we would be in a far worse place this year without the transfer players . . . just sayin'

Pretty big straw man there. The entire league finished with the same record essentially. They finished right around where most knowledgeable people thought they would.

Agree 100%. Need a PG/Floor General. Hard to believe we can make a run no matter what seed we are. No PG and no leadership. Wish Rogers and Harris would've played more to be honest. They bring EFFORT. Next year is a lot more exciting with those guys having experience under their belt having played together. I feel like Rogers, Harris, and Goode can be leaders and will build chemistry. I sure hope we make a run. But I don't have much for expectations at this point.
Did anyone else notice that Underwood wasn't typical Underwood? Wasn't in people's face, yelling, super pissed off. He sat down a lot. He chewed his gum. Wondering what's on his mind. Don't get me wrong, I really like him as our coach. Just wondering what's up.
I'd like to think Epps can be that floor general, and I think Harris or Rodgers can step up in that leadership role. As for Underwood...he's probably just out of options at this point. 30+ games in and no matter what you do or say your team is what it is.

I think this year was an eye opener to be sure. Rebuilding the core of a team through the portal just may not be a viable option. The focus should probably be on developing and keeping (if that is even possible anymore) a young core and then supplementing with an occasional portal player to fill a gap.
