Danger Zone
You hear people say that a certain player needs to play within themself. That doesn’t mean being passive but recognizing your strengths and playing aggressively towards them.

Brad’s lesson from this year needs to be to coach within himself. Brad is a culture guy and the last four years he has run a coaching clinic in terms of building a culture around everyday guys. As someone who teaches leadership in higher ed, I have really enjoyed watching how he accomplished this and turned around a program with zero identity. And, being honest, some of that involved jettisoning guys that did not fit the mold in terms of attitude.

This year, Brad didn’t coach within himself and he lost control of his culture. He brought in multiple guys with considerable talent that were never going fit this culture and gave them prominent roles without earning it through work ethic or buy in to the system. One defected early, the other - Mayer - did enough positive things to make matters worse. That’s nothing against Matt. He seems like a fun dude to hang with and he had plus moments, but overall he was a deficit to this particular team. TSJ is a dog, and maybe without the other wildcards around him, the team might have gelled around him more.

It’s not about sacrificing talent for work ethic. Ayo had the right mentality. So did Kofi and Trent. Ty has it, and I think Sencire and Luke have it too. There’s a core here, and I hope Brad leans into that core moving forward. And I hope he can build around it with talented guys who get that you can be talented and be a workhorse at the same time.

It seems highly unlikely that we will be ranked from start to finish next year. So short of that, I would much rather watch an average team find its swagger and become roadkill assassins over the course of a big ten season rather than watch fools gold shine in November and then fade. And that takes commitment to culture and to the process.

Underwood is an amazing coach, and I think he course corrects from here. Fingers crossed.

Welp, that didn't last long! 4-7 since Feb 1.

We pride ourselves on improvement over the year, and this year was the opposite. Not to mention, two building blocks quit during mid-year. Very poor taste in my mouth and unless we reload quickly the trend will not improve next year. No one seems poised to bust out next year scoring-wise. Who is coming back who scored more than 15 points in any of the past ten games? And you need FOUR of them to hit 60!
I value Underwood as a coach, but I don't think bought in to his required style. Minimum three transfers in NEEDED for success-- Lead guard , high scoring wing and a dominating big man.

But the MOST important need-- improved team chemistry.

Love the guys coming back, but they are role players. And the two freshmen-- as Mcguire said "the best thing about freshmen is that they become sophomores!"

I anticipate a tough year up-coming....
Chemistry! I have been saying that most of the year, just didn’t seem to have it most of the time.. If the team ex Shannon and Mayer return, the chemistry might be there as they have been to the wars together, bought into the system and have grown.

Two plays bothered me in this game, both had to do with communication and being on the same page together.

1. End of First half 3 by TSJ. Clock had reset to 20, but he put up the shot as if 3.9 seconds was still on the clock. Mostly on TSJ, but that's a sign of not communicating.

2. End of 2nd half, down by 5, CoHawk on the break and gets his pocket picked from behind. There HAS to be some sort of official team word for look out behind you. I would have liked to see him get rid of the ball sooner, but he would have been fine if he kept dribbling with his left. (This was the play of the game IMO).

This was the most frequently mentioned concern on this board before the season began - two freshmen PGs. It went from two to one then to none. Hard to overcome that especially with all the other short comings.

We had none

Yeah... Sadly that's what I heard from an insider from another program a few weeks ago. Unfortunate, but sadly seemed like the writing was on the wall as he didn't seem like he was completely buying in. Sigh...
What was his issue? He played a ton as a freshman. Was he unhappy playing point? Did he not get along with the coaches? WTF…. This would be a blow. Losing 2/4 freshmen recruits from last year!!??

I'd make one observation RE: Robert.

He is ridiculously optimistic about Illinois football. Basketball, not so much.
Definitely true about Robert. But the numbers are what they are...BUs offense isn't translating into March. Something has to change.

The insider from Arizona wouldn't give any details other than he was really unhappy with his situation here, and just for me to prepare for him leaving as it was more likely than not. I tried not paying it much mind as he was starting and was getting more minutes, but sadly, it seems whatever info he had wasn't wrong. I too am hoping we can work things out but I'm guessing his on-court utilization isn't the only issue in play here.

Saw him shoulder BU during a time out...also BU was getting into his a&$ during a time out and he wasn't having any of it...so I see it, hoping there is more good stuff than bad...

Some thoughts:
Recruiting P5 role players in the portal to be the guys is less than ideal but was probably required this year. The better portal guys might be those who were the man at a mid-major because they will have some experience as a leader, and the focus of an offense. I think TSJ is a great kid but he seems a little introverted. MM was likeable but goofy guy, not really a leader. But because we lost so much we had to bring in the best players we could find in the portal and that was TSJ and MM.
It seemed like whatever voodoo was put on RJ in mid-season transferred to Mayer. Just as we get the good RJ back, Mayer goes into a slump. If both of those guys had been shooting to their talent level at the same time, we would have been a far different team.
As for those critical of Mayer's defense, I think he was trying to play it like BU wanted him to. He played tight out at the 3 pt line and gave up drives to the basket which he then defended at the rim but not much elsewhere. He was making them take 2s.
The one bright spot to CH having 6 TOs today is that he didn't show out in the Big Dance and might return for round 4.
I think this team did about as I expected, as I had them 21-10 preseason. Would have expected them to play better in the B1G tourney and maybe have a better seed in the NCAA tourney. It is a difficult thing to do to put together almost a completely new team. Illinois fans are somewhat spoiled by the age and continuity we have had the two previous years. We were up against a team with 2 NBA lottery picks today - no real shame in losing the game. It was a shame that we didn't value the ball more, but that is in part a byproduct of having no PG.
Looking forward to next year and a bunch of the current team returning.
