Can anyone imagine Jabari Parker, jahlil okafor and any other stud Chicago recruit going to notre dame? This isn’t just an Illinois vs notre dame thing. Both Michigan schools both big ten Indiana schools and Illinois are all way better options then notre dame. And then you get to the schools that recruit nationally. Notre dame would be wasting their time recruiting in Chicago unless they were trying to find diamonds in the rough(which I think they’ll have success doing now with shrewsberry).
Right? If we’re intimidated by ND then we might as well not go out and recruit.

Miller has outplayed his seed a total of 1 time ever. 3 times he’s been an upset. 7 times got as far as expected based on seeding and teams they faced. 3 missed tournaments. 1 NIT. 2020 was canceled and 2021 was a postseason ban and this year they escaped a 14 and beat a play in 11 and TBD v Texas.

I’m not sold on Miller. Great coach but I wouldn’t call him much of an upgrade over BU.

I'd be curious how many of ND's football fan base in Chicago (which is overrated in size to begin with ... in terms of pure numbers, there are absolutely more Illini fans) are even apathetic Notre Dame basketball fans. From my experience? Less than 25% for sure.

South Bend is closer to Chicago than Champaign. Proximity might be a more significant connection than ancient history to at least some recruits. 🤷‍♀️
I think we can definitively say no on that too.

First off, posters always seem to think recruits take an academic approach to their recruitment. It's not like they're getting out mapquest, like I just did, and saying Chicago to Champaign is 136 miles, but Chicago to South Bend is only 96 miles. Oh mom dad, that's a 30 min time savings (although it probably isn't given traffic and tolls) times 15 home games a year times 4 years. I have to go to Notre Dame it will save you 60 hours over the next 4 years. Notre Dame it is.

But the way I really know this is a non factor is because kids don't even stay home for high school anymore, let alone college. We may very well see Morez leave Chicago to finish his career next year. Shannon left Chicago. The reason there is less talent in Chicago than usual these past handful of years is because top talent from all over is flocking to the many many prep schools. There was a day when it was Oak Hill or nothing in terms of prep schools. Now if you look at the top 100 in any given year, 50% of the kids are from prep schools.

Also, kids definitely grow up with favorite teams, and proximity can play into that, but by and large an allegiance is to a home state school if proximity is involved. They don't draw a circle around their house and say I'll have allegiance to any school in a 100 mile radius. Given Notre Dame has never sustained national attention, I can't imagine there are any kids in Chicago growing up watching Notre Dame basketball and dreaming to one day be the next Demetrius Jackson.

So no for myriad reasons, I do not feel Shrewsberry is any more of a threat to our recruiting at Notre Dame than he was at Penn State.

I don't know that kids grow up with favorite teams anymore either. It seems as if most kids have favorite players. YouTube and streaming services give kids access to world wide talent now as opposed to when I was growing up (Fox Sports Chicago for the Bulls, WCIA for the Illini, and whatever happened to be on TNT that week)

Shrewsberry will never be a threat to our recruiting. A threat to our win-loss record, on the other hand ...

true, but they know who's been winning lately, which is why it's important to win for recruiting.

I think these young studs likely watch the NBA more than college basketball. I think that goes a long way to the mindset that someone like Calipari can put you in the league. We look at it through the lens of a grown adult who realizes that if an actual wildcat was the coach at Kentucky, they'd still make the NBA. But 17 year olds don't see it that way.

Of course the trump card nowadays is often cold hard cash. Who will give me the most.

I agree with this 1000%. My point was I don't think we'll ever see us recruit the same we did pre-2015ish. My family used to drive all over the state to watch Lucas Johnson, Jerry Hester, and others before they'd play for the Orange and Blue. It was always cool. Their parents would be sporting an Illini hat on top of their high school t-shirt. I'd venture to guess that walk-ons Paxton Warden and Connor Serven may be the only current Illini to have ever even watched us on television before high school, let alone attend a game.

I don’t think Miller is going anywhere for atleast a few years. That may change though because money talks.

Academy programs have almost deemed "Chicago recruiting" meaningless. Obviously have to keep relationships open as that is where thr kids are from, but I'd venture a guess that these academies start to hold more trust in inner circles than the former highschool coach. Atleast for the top of top recruits.
