I am familiar with marketing. I am not in central Illinois so please name me 1 commercial that our BB players have been on to earn their NIL $. They are getting paid to play BB for UI period. I do not think they are helping sell anything with their name, image or likeness. That is just a convenient cover for the powers that be able to say that college BB players are not just getting a salary. What products are our players helping sell. Can you name them for me?
Yes I've seen at least Kofi and Coleman on tv doing commercials. There are a ton of issues with NIL sustainability. For one, no one is going to the rec center because Coleman Hawkins is in the commercial. No one is going to the doctor because Kofi said so. For the most part, NIL money spent by businesses are wasted on college kids. So how long will businesses just pump money to football and basketball teams to get players if it is a loss every time. Then there are the promises that have been broken to players when they didn't get their money.
But looking at social media reach is pretty simple. If you can sell a shirt to 1% of people you reach, then I'd rather reach a million than 200k. The better you are the bigger your reach. The better you are the more likely you are to sell a shirt to 2% or 4% of the people you reach. So yes, ability does play into, those are just projections.
