Go look at why Certa got a technical against UHIGH. One slip up like that in the Big 10 and he’ll be picking up his teeth off the court.
Found something about taunting. It does not give specifics. I have seen some dubious taunting calls against Illini players.

Picking up his teeth? I don't get the hostility toward a still developing top 150 basketball prospect from central Illinois who is interested in attending UI.

The Cubs will win another WS before the Cards do. Now back on topic, the Illini, as everyone has said, needs a veteran PG who has proved to be able to run a offense, has dribble drive and mostly, be able to make his team mates better making sure our shooters cash get the ball in shooting position. A stretch 5 who can pass from post and can shoot from farther than 2 ft and one additional shooter. We get this, we will contend next year by playing 10 guys double digit minutes while no one gets over 30 a game.

As a fellow Cubs fan, please stop. Please. Or at least keep it out of the basketball thread

Certa still has another year. A lot can happen in his development in that time frame. IMO if we were sure he could shoot at a level like Plummer then he’s worth getting anyway

As I look through our 2024 offers to try and gauge where Certa may stand in our wishlist order, it strikes me outside of Certa, Austin Swartz and Jaiden Glover, I haven't really heard jack about players that could be a realistic option to land.

Certa couldn’t guard his shadow but agree kid can shoot
Serious question. Do you think he could become an acceptable defender or does he lack the necessary
athleticism?

Edit: Sorry just catching up. I see you already answered this.

3-4 times and talked to numerous coaches who played against him
Have those 3-4 times been in person (in the gym) or on TV? My problem with your comment is the "couldn't guard his own shadow" comment. That's an absurd statement that doesn't lend itself to an adult conversation. I have seen him play live 5 or 6 times and still am not ready to make a productive comment about his defense. Too much zone for that. I think it's fair to say his defense needs improvement, which he probably knows as well as anybody. This kid has his head on straight and will work on all aspects of his game. He needs to gain strength and muscle mass but he knows that too. BU has been on him hard for quite a while. That says a lot to me.

Well I am niether a cards or cubs fan. That said the Wrigley's didn't wanna commit. Since the Ricketts bought the team each has one. I will say Cardinal fans are much more annoying to listen to at least in Peoria. I don't see either winning one for a while. With owners that want to commit to win either could happen. That wasn't the case before 2009.

I more concerned about Illini hoops no matter what time of year it is. I hope we can land a big time transfer soon and both of you can be fired up about that.
Well, for me it is good natured as my friends/family are 50/50 and we enjoy ribbing each other. I will admit I rooted for the cubbies in their world series win.

Yes I do think that. Two things that will help him defensively: His basketball IQ is very high, which is an important element of defense. And secondly, his attitude. He's a dedicated kid who will work like hell to improve anything that needs improving. Let's not forget, he's probably 16 yrs. old.

If all it took was a “head on straight” and “working on all aspects of his game” to play in the Big10 then basketball rosters would be the size of football rosters.

How "Hard"? I believe BU has been to games and does stay in touch. I do not believe he is amoung his top choices nationally that he and the staff are recruiting the most. There is interest. He may have a commitable offer like Morez but I doubt he does yet. BU went hard after Morez and Amani. The moment they wanted to come he said come on.

🙄 Right. He left so it’s time for Epps to suck.

In non-revisionist history, he was one of our best players this year.
My thoughts on Epps is 1)he had a nice first half of his freshmen year, 2)he was put in an incredibly difficult spot in having to run the point for 25 MPG, but 3)he made just terrible decisions in games later in the year and 4)he was getting slaughtered on the defensive end.

#4 was the reason that BU got on his case. He missed switches, he got bullied by more physical guards...he was clearly a target and other coaches ran plays right at him. SH got a LOT of time as the season wore on because he wasn't a weak link defensively. Just my take.

In his defense, I think that he was playing out of position and he got more minutes/more pressure than he should have. He should have been off the ball, coming off the bench and his role should have been an instant offense type situation. Too much responsibility, too quickly for him.

I think with Certa it's pretty simple. He needs to show he can be a star on the 17u circuit when he's going to be playing great athletes game in and game out. He played 16u last year and some regarded him as a top 5 player from the state for that division. However, some of the best 16us played up. So if he can do it against the best all summer, that will make coaches feel a lot more comfortable taking the commitment of a class 2A player.

Also as others have said, there are very few players in the Big 10 with a build like his. He needs to add strength, and if done right, that added strength and power can make him a more explosive athlete. I don't think he's a take right now, but that doesn't mean he won't be a take by August.
