Surprised Donald Trump GIF

Great point. It sounds to me like the biggest difference is that Trent was willing to soak up everything the staff gave him in coaching and work his butt off to get better...and Jayden is coming off as an entitled little 💩head

Can we get back to talking about Paul's chili?
I prefer talking about Krekel’s greaseburgers. I still remember watching Krekel grab the hamburger balls and smashing them flat on the grill on Water Street. This was back when MacArthur HS was still around. I went to Mt. Zion, but the MacArthur summer school kids would walk over and eat there for lunch. Grew up playing golf all summer at Nelson Park golf course and Fairies Park as well. Amazing how things change!

I LOVE Krekels. But I don’t think it has anything on the Maidrite in Quincy.
(Some consider it a bit of an acquired taste. I am not one of those people. It was love at first bite.)

but the made for March mantra wasn't just a preseason and early season talking point, it continued throughout the season even after some of the team changes.
With the exception of the fart noise press conference, Underwood very much seems to motivate through the media/praise in public.

It’s a pretty dramatic shift from Groce who tried to lower expectations and Weber who tried to motivate with public criticism. I perceived the made for March towards the tail end as an attempt to fire up the fellas. He can’t tell them we can still win it all in practice and then turn around and say, “if we’re making shots and get the right draw we can compete with anybody”

If you are going to participate in Illini pre-season prognostication, there are a few simple rules you should be familiar with.

1. Freshmen will exceed expectations; veterans will have break-out seasons.
2. There will not be any injuries; Fletch will improve all measurables.
3. No one on our roster will enter the transfer portal; we will get a transfer who can play multiple positions and effectively play the point in a pinch.
4. Team toughness will improve and we will win the last 10 minutes of every game; leadership will develop so that we are always ready to play at the tipoff.
5. Weaknesses will magically be resolved.

These are Quincy Geurrier's stats from 2020-2021. The free throw percentage was 67% instead of last years 54% so he can do better. I will take 14 and 7.
He’s a career 62% FT shooter. Could he do better? Sure. Will he? Odds are not favorable. And 62% is not bueno.

BU does not get nearly enough respect for having won two Big Ten championships at Illinois.

Coach does not get enough respect... PERIOD. First, he is a fine roundball coach. Some might even call him... ‘E - L - I - T...’.

Second, he clearly loves his players. In most interviews he almost always interjects the respect and admiration he has for guys who play for him.

And third... he loves the Illini Basketball Program. He has said that from Day One. And that’s genuine. And no contract for a coach can buy that kind of honest feeling.

That’s the difference between a Stepping Stone coach and Program Builder coach. Stepping stones are just marking time for gig they’d rather be at. Program Builders love their place and set on a course to accomplish something there greater than just personal wealth and glory.

The Illini were lucky to grab this guy. The Hollywood ending to the story would of course be to see him hoist the Big Trophy high over his head with a great big smile on his face while his players have their arms around him. With grins to match.

And a big party would break out from Zion to Cairo and Galena to the Ohio River and every place in between that has been waiting for this moment for generations.

Would hardly call Sanogo a “lumbering, back-to-the-basket Big” the same way I think of a Kofi, a Hunter or an Edey.
Of the three you named…with his outside shooting and passing ability…Hunter’s the LEAST traditional BIG IMO. Sanogo isn't exactly a Mutumbo-type BIG either…but he arguably is more so than Hunter. I’m not trying to split hairs. I’m just sayin.

In other news….God, I hate complimenting that putz.(Hunter not Sanogo obv.)

It ensures Hansberry won't have to play a big role, unless he plays better than QG. It raises our fIoor. It also ensures that all 4 of the big men have to play against a quality, B1G caliber, F/C in practice. The 2nd team will have some DUDES.
Stuff happens. Having redundancy on your roster is a good thing, if the guys can play.
The plus side of all of our transfers being 5th year guys, is that our young players will be sitting at the top of the depth chart when the next off-season rolls around. That should make it a bit easier to keep them.
It’s especially important if someone gets hurt👍

Seriously ... like, we underperformed in the NCAA Tournament ONE time and played to our seed twice, and it's as if we didn't just hang TWO Big Ten banners (and what should have been a third) for the first time in 17 frickin' years.

This is great. I needed this.

But it's soft-headed and impractical to suggest it's possible for Jayden Epps to make a similar evolution at the same position in the same system.
Possibly. I don’t recall Trent pouting during a game/refusing to go back in. That right there suggests a potentially different mindset than what Trent had/has. At a minimum that suggests a lack of buy in to the coaching. And if you haven’t bought in you aren’t going to improve.
